Handel's 12 Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, are the greatest works in their form since the 12 Concertos, Op. 6, of Corelli, Handel's mentor. A concerto grosso is a work in which a larger group of instruments alternates and contrasts with a smaller group of soloists--there's no limit to how many solos you can have. Handel was a master improviser, and these concertos are simply the last word in terms of what a Baroque composer could do with a string orchestra. Solos come and go quick as a wink, the texture is always fresh and constantly changing. This Canadian chamber orchestra plays like a small band of demons--they're simply possessed by the joyful spirit of the music. Fantastic. --David Hurwitz
