Evgeny Svetlanov's Tchaikovsky is coarse, vulgar, hysterical, crudely played (with some unbelievably noisy sounds emanating from the brass section), and often exciting as hell. Your reaction to it depends on your tolerance for approximate intonation and willful interpretive excess, and while it's kind of hard to make the case for these recordings as first recommendations, if you don't take them all that seriously, they really are fun to listen to now and then. --David Hurwitz
