While the Joseph Szigeti/Claudio Arrau pairing looks promising on paper, Szigeti is essentially fighting an uphill battle with a stylish but rather subdued pianist. Arrau was a great Beethoven player, but was chamber music his thing? Compare this rather static Kreutzer Sonata to the wrenching one Szigeti played with Bartók only a few years earlier in the same venue, and you'll hear what I mean. Adequate archival sonics. --Jed Distler
