This is an extraordinary two-CD set of Hindemith's seven chamber concertos. Hindemith's chamber music often reflects his own interest in the violin and viola; however, this doesn't mean that his chamber concertos are top-heavy with strings. What these works show is Hindemith's stages. The early concertos are influenced by the postmodernism of the Twenties and Thirties. Bartók and Stravinsky went through the same phases at the same time. The later chamber concertos are more balanced, tonally, and somewhat richer. Hindemith was always good at spreading out the roles. (And catch the spooky organ in number 7!) --Paul Cook
