After suffering a childhood disease that crippled her immune system, Lili Boulanger was in frail health until her tragically early death at the age of 24. So it's particularly astounding to hear the passionate, powerful, large-scale setting of Psalm 150, the work of a mature, masterly composer. The other psalm settings and the Ancient Buddhist Prayer, similarly based in deep religious faith, are also moving music. But the most memorable experience this disc offers--and one of the most memorable in all recorded music--is the "Pie Jesu," a work of overwhelming intensity and beauty, exquisitely sung by a boy soprano who achieved musical immortality in that one moment four decades ago. All the performances, supervised by the composer's sister, Nadia, are extremely effective. Two of these pieces also appear in an excellent Lili Boulanger collection from Chandos. Start with this Everest disc, though, for the best available introduction to one of the greatest and least-known composers of the 20th century. --Leslie Gerber
