Amazon.com essential recording
One of the hallmarks of a great recording is that it remains in the catalog at full price, as this one has for the better part of 20 years. The coupling is unusual but apt. The Brahms trio, with its odd combination of violin, horn, and piano, has seldom been better done, and it represents the composer at his best. Franck's popular sonata also receives one of its finest recorded performances from Perlman and Ashkenazy. Perlman is an outstanding chamber-music artist, and this is one of his most memorable recordings. --David Hurwitz
