Kenneth Gilbert recorded a superb series of Bach keyboard works for Harmonia Mundi, of which this excellent Goldberg Variations is the only remaining sample in the current catalog. We can only hope that the rest will return in due course at midprice, as they are here, since there seems to be a dearth of Bach on harpsichord in the current catalog. In any case, Gilbert's Goldberg Variations are among the finest available, particularly in his choice of instrument--a lovely one with a clear, bell-like tone that isn't a bit fatiguing over the course of this very lengthy work. Harmonia Mundi has also given him a first class recording, offering an ideal combination of warmth and detail. --David Hurwitz
