Best Tangos: Verano Porteno

As far as I know, Astor Piazzolla didn't write any tangos for the piano, so these are all arrangements. Aquilles Delle Vigne, who comes from Buenos Aires, gets the rhythms and style of the music just right. I wouldn't want to say, as the CD does, that these are "Astor Piazzolla's Best Tangos," but they are all quite good ones. Although they're "just" popular dance pieces, many of them stick in the memory the way inspired music often does. The piano sound on this disc is just all right, not state-of-the-art. But at the asking price it's a great bargain, and a good way for the cautious to get acquainted with this wonderful music. --Leslie Gerber
