After Book 2, there's hardly anything new to say about Couperin's Third and Fourth books of harpsichord pieces. Each little piece has its own character. Each one is a gem, though some are semi-precious stones and some are diamonds. Kenneth Gilbert's performances are consistently fine, expressive and stylish, and though they date back about three decades from this CD, they still sound fine. At Harmonia Mundi's current price, Books 3 and 4, each compressed onto two CDs, make particularly attractive introductions to Couperin's harpsichord music. Nearly anyone who likes Baroque harpsichord music either loves these pieces or will love them when they hear them. --Leslie Gerber
