E.J. Moeran (1894-1950) was a collector of folk songs and, as such, regional folk songs permeate his music--as it did Ralph Vaughan Williams, his contemporary. Gathered here are three folk- music-inspired rhapsodies, with the third for piano and orchestra. Moeran's teacher, John Ireland, taught him how to make use of folk music sources. The themes are sweeping, lyrical and thoroughly British. The dates for the rhapsodies are: no. 1 (1922), no. 2 (1924), and no. 3 (1943). "In the Mountain Country" (1921) is a tone poem that rivals anything by Bax or Delius. All the Moeran releases on Chandos are magnificent. --Paul Cook
