The Beethoven, from 1932, is the version against which all others have been measured and usually found wanting. Szigeti was at the height of his powers, and while he may not display the raw energy of Huberman, the velvety grace of Kreisler, or the matter-of-fact wizardry of Heifetz, he's close on all counts, and trumps them with intense lyricism that cuts to the heart of the music. Bruno Walter's conducting is perfectly in tune with Szigeti's conception of the work and the orchestra's recorded with a depth and warmth uncommon for the period. The Brahms, from 1928, is on a similarly exalted level, combining intensity and insight. An irresistible pairing of two timeless recordings in superb transfers. --Dan Davis
