Late at night, when everyone else in the house is asleep. Driving in a quiet luxury car, with the noise of other traffic shut out. These are some ideal times for Couperin's harpsichord music, of which this is his final collection. Rather than running out of inspiration, Couperin seemed to gain it as he went along, so these late pieces are among his best. Kenneth Gilbert's performances continue to satisfy, particularly in his use of embellishments in repeated sections. The analog sound also holds up well. These two discs hold a fascinating small musical world that will repay continuing investigation and listening. --Leslie Gerber
