Before World War II, the Busch String Quartet was widely considered to be one of the world's greatest. Hearing these recordings, made in 1937 and 1933, we realize that while sound recording has progressed greatly since then, the technical and interpretive quality of this playing remains on the highest level. Adolf Busch and his colleagues play these pieces with the most profound insight imaginable. When you get to this level, there is no question of the "best" performances; we just marvel at how moving they are. These are not the best-sounding transfers Biddulph has produced, but they are good enough. --Leslie Gerber
