These are all of Janácek's major piano works. Commentators argue endlessly about whether a performer's nationality affects the way he or she plays music. I'll say that, with music so completely based on the speech rhythms of the composer's native language, a Czech player of Janácek's music has an automatic advantage, one thoroughly exploited by Radoslav Kvapil. These are all enigmatic, mysterious pieces based on Janácek's late folk-influenced idiom. The music isn't easy to get acquainted with--although Kvapil's expressive playing helps greatly. But once you get to know this music, I think you will find it unique and extremely moving. --Leslie Gerber
