At lower mid-price, this Brahms symphony cycle is certainly one of the best deals around. Stanislaw Skrowaczewski's reputation has suffered from the fact that no one around can pronounce or spell his name (it sounds like "Skrovachefsky"), but as a musician he's up there with the great ones. He has his English orchestra playing at a very high level indeed, and his Brahms commands respect both for its fidelity to the composer's text as well as for its emotional spontaneity. Give it a shot. You won't be sorry. --David Hurwitz
