As a matter of public record, Doreen Carwithen was the wife of William Alwyn. But that's not why Chandos is recording her music. Carwithen was a composer long before she met Alwyn (as amanuensis and literary secretary). Carwithen's music is a bit more romantic in flavor than Alwyn's; but that's no criticism. Unlike Alwyn, Carwithen has a very strong affinity to folk music and, given her background in writing film scores, she has emerged as a major voice in British classical music. Of special mention here is the Overture ODTAA, or "One Damn Thing After Another." You can't miss with this release. --Paul Cook
