Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
In the Masses recorded here, Palestrina, using the 16th-century practice of "parody", based his music on materials from two popular madrigals. The technique is easiest to hear at the beginning of each Mass movement, where Palestrina uses a variation on the opening measures of his model. The practice of basing sacred works on decidedly worldly madrigals was one that irked the Council of Trent, yet these lovely Masses show no hint of impiety. Delitiæ Musicæ is an excellent Italian ensemble little known in the United States, but its members all sing regularly with estimable ensembles such as Concerto Italiano. This disc is the first of a Palestrina series where the works will be sung one-voice-per-part, an approach common in 16th- century Italy, though rare now. --Matthew Westphal
