If you're looking for a set of all nine Beethoven symphonies, this one is pretty hard to beat. It's the most consistently fine interpretively, as well as supremely well played and gorgeously recorded. In fact, purely as sound, there is none better. Gunter Wand specializes in the German standards, and he does them as well as anyone can. In particular, every single performance of the "big" symphonies--Nos. 3, 5, 6, 7 and 9--is outstanding, and his versions of 5, 7, and 9 really outpace just about all the competition. At full price, this is not the cheapest set around, but it's worth every penny. --David Hurwitz --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
