Rore is remembered today as a very important madrigalist. Peter Phillips made this disc to demonstrate that Rore was a fine composer of sacred music as well. The motets included here are fine pieces (especially the beguiling Descendi in hortum meum, with a text from the Song of Solomon), but the masterpiece is Rore's mass based on Josquin's powerful Christmas motet Præter rerum seriem. It's a classic "parody" mass--that is, based on a pre-existing composition. Rore takes melodies and even whole sections of Josquin's motet, extends them, rearranges or re-scores them (he added a second soprano part to Josquin's six voices); the original material is always recognizable, yet at the same time always fresh. --Matthew Westphal
