Frederic Rzewski composed these thirty six variations based on a Chilean resistance song in 1975 for pianist Ursula Oppens, who later recorded them to great acclaim. The composer, however, is a more dynamic, elemental pianist than Oppens is, and he has amazing rhythmic vitality. While Oppens opts not to insert an improvised cadenza before the theme returns at the end, Rzewski lets his fingers and imagination run wild for eight minutes. People United embraces swirling romanticism, motoric minimalist sequences, asymmetrical cloudbursts, down home folk songs, and much more. Rzewski brings these disparate elements together with rigor, passion, and fierce commitment. The music is uncompromising, yet accessible. A seminal release. --Jed Distler
