Preludes & Fugues Op 87

Shostakovich made two LPs of selections from his preludes and fugues. Apparently, this CD and a companion (RV 70003) are different recordings from broadcasts and contain several selections not included on the LPs. Shostakovich is a composer whose performances of his own music are always worth hearing. Despite a few wrong notes (he hated to do retakes and usually refused), he plays with enough dexterity and conviction to get across his ideas about his own music. Obviously, he intended these pieces as emotional experiences, not intellectual exercises, and it's very affecting to hear him play them. --Leslie Gerber
