About the Artist
The Romeiko Ensemble was formed in 1993 (Philadelhia, USA). Its primary focus is the performance of classical music of Byzantium (secular and chant), as well as classical and traditional post-Byzantine music (15th-19th centuries). Under the direction of Yiorgos Bilalis, the Romeiko has undertaken the task of bringing this music to a wider audience through authentic, historically based interpretations. At the heart of the ensemble are musicians from the United States, Greece, and Turkey. The Romeiko has performed extensively in the United States and abroad, being twice featured (1995, 1996) in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. At the 13th International Festival in Hajnowka, Poland (1994), the ensemble was honored with "special distinction" from among 37 choirs.

Album Description
Sounds of the Parthenon premiered November 9, 1996 in Nashville, TN as the final event of the Centennial year ceremonies for the Nashville Parthenon, the world's only full-scale replica of the original in Athens, Greece. With music and songs from each major period of the Parthenon's history, the Romeiko Ensemble celebrated 25 centuries of cultural tradition and continuity. Built in ancient Greece (5th c. BC) as a temple for the goddess Athena, the Parthenon was transformed during the Byzantine era (6th c. AD) into a Christian church dedicated to the "Virgin Mary of Athens" (Panagia Atheniotissa). Under the Ottoman Empire (Fall of Athens, 1456), the Parthenon served as a Muslin mosque; it survives into modern times as an architectural marvel, perhaps the world most famous building. A three week US tour took Sounds of the Parthenon to Princeton University, Hunter College (New York), and Holy Cross (Boston).
