This mid-priced discful of Dvorák's rarely heard tone poems comes from mono recordings made in 1949-51. It's a pity that many potential listeners will avoid it for that reason. Václav Talich, still considered his country's greatest conductor, leads this music with such intense identification that the disc is musically compelling throughout. The interest of these performances, virtually an object lesson in idiomatic Dvorák conducting, far outweighs the limitation of old (but not bad) recordings, which have been well remastered and are offered at mid-price. This is a very highly recommended disc for all Dvorák lovers, even those who own other recordings of the music. --Leslie Gerber
