Vladimir Martynov's Galicia is the western province of Ukraine, bordering on Russia, Poland, Hungary and Romania. In the 19th century, Russian folklorist I.P. Sakharov collected the Slavic legends that would inspire poet Velimir Khlebnikov's Night in Galicia, an evocative allusion to the fabled linguistic powers of Siberian shamans and the enigmatic singing of the mythical river maidens. Composer Martynov drew on Khlebnikov to craft this classically informed avant-garde exploration of vocal and instrumental minimalism, reiterative song and layered melody and rhythm. Accompanied by the strings of Ensemble Opus Posth, the startlingly raw vocals of the Dmitri Pokrovsky folkloric group are especially haunting, in the resonant vein of the great folk choirs of the Balkans.
