This disc, made (naturally) with support from the regional government of Lorraine (France), contains late 15th/16th-century music from a chansonnier (illuminated songbook) belonging to the Dukes of Lorraine. There are a number of motets by Josquin, Obrecht, Compère, and other Netherlanders--performed here by instruments, unaccompanied choir, or various combinations thereof. Unfortunately, the choir's raw tone and unreliable tuning keep their performances from being successful. Never mind that, because the disc begins with a beautiful performance of a rare item: the "Missa O vos omnes" by Pierquin de Thérache, based on a somber motet for Holy Week by Loyset Compère. Dominique Vellard (who sings second tenor) and three other soloists give an admirable account of a Mass that's not likely to be recorded again anytime soon. --Matthew Westphal
