The DES-5016 is a highly flexible switch that offers dual-speed NWay ports, advanced network management, and expansion slots for fiber-optics, ISDN, ATM and Gigabit Ethernet modules. The switch allows users to add ports, upgrade to higher bandwidth options and connect to remote sites in a cost effective way. The DES-5016 is a 5-slot chassis. An SNMP module is preinstalled in a full-size slot. 2 additional full-size slots and 2 half-size slots are provided. Users can select to configure the port density and expansion modules to meet their specific requirements. Up to 16 dual-speed NWay ports can be configured in a DES-5016. These ports allow connection to either 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX. Users plug in any port, and the DES-5016 will automatically determine the network speed and mode, based on the capability and configuration of the attached device. The DES-5016 uses store-and-forward switching to eliminate transmission data errors. Depending on network circumstances, users can set the switching method to cut-through to minimize latency. Alternatively, users can install up to 16 100BASE-FX fiber ports, or combine both twisted-pair and fiber ports in a single DES-5016. The fiber ports extend cable coverage in a high-bandwidth, congestion-free switched packet environment. Expansion Modules Options available in the future include, ISDN, ATM and GIGA Ethernet modules. These modules can be installed in the half-size slots, permitting switched workgroups to connect to remote sites, or to other networks via ATM and 1000Mbps large bandwidth links.
