The System 5000 delivers the most versatile and cost-effective network platform on the market today. Based on field-proven Bay Networks frame switching technology, this solution is elegant in its simplicity. The System 5000 local switching architecture allows hundreds of high powered Ethernet and Fast Ethernet desktops to be connected together in one chassis, with each leveraging System 5000 resources such as power supply, redundancy and network management. The Model 5000S and Model 5005S provide high-performance local switching fabric on each module. Local switching architecture means that every module makes its own packet forwarding decisions at wire speed. This is an advantage over centralized switching architectures, used by some competing products, wherein the forwarding decision on millions of incoming packets is made by a single supervisory module, introducing a bottleneck at the heart of switching operations.
