Book Description

Throughout most of the 20th century, from World War I until his death in 1993, America poet and pacifist William Stafford remained convinced that wars don't work. In his poetry and other writing, he showed that it is crucial to think independently when fanatics act and to speak for reconciliation when nations take sides. This inspiring volume collects the antiwar writings of this lifelong advocate for peace: journal excerpts, pacifist poems, interviews, and an account of his own near-hanging at the hands of American patriots. In thought-provoking passages sure to strike a chord today, he assesses U.S. political habits and suggests that there are always alternative approaches to aggression. This powerful book about nonviolence includes never-before-published excerpts from William Stafford's daily journal from 1951 to 1991.

5 out of 5 stars If A Book Could Save the World. . . it might be this one........2005-05-14

As a review of this book, I offer only that after reading less than a third of it, I ordered additional copies to give away to others. I can't think of another time that I have done this. Expect to be prodded by humor and deep thinking, and moved to joy and tears by Stafford's reflections on war and peace.

Book Description

A fully annotated, bilingual edition, Calligrammes is a key work not only in Apollinaire's own development but also in the evolution of modern French poetry. Apollinaire--Roman by birth, Polish by name (Wilhelm-Apollinaris de Kostrowitski), Parisian by choice--died at thirty-eight in 1918. Nevertheless, he became one of the leading figures in twentieth-century poetry, a transitional figure whose work at once echoes the Symbolists and anticipates the work of the Surrealists.

5 out of 5 stars a masterpiece.......2006-02-13

This work is nothing short of a masterpiece.

If you're just being introduced to poetry or Guillaume Apollinaire, this is a must-read. I can't even begin to describe the depth and meaning found in every word of this book.

The only complaint I have is that the translations were not always accurate, but with a book of this size, there are inevitably going to be small translation errors.

Read it! It will change your life.

5 out of 5 stars Be prepared to weep..........2002-12-09

I first came across this book in the early 1980's when I shared a house (as a roommate) with one of the book's contributors. As a former protester against the war in Vietnam, I was moved to tears by many of the stories and poems presented in this anthology. This book brought home to me that we are all people on this planet, and that cruelty to one has a ripple effect against us all. Most striking were the poems of the Vietnamese contributors. To see the US through their eyes was, to say the least, an eye-opener. What also moved me was the common thread of all concerned asking the simple question we must all be courageous enough to ask: WHY? It didn't matter whose contribution I was reading; the depth and variety of the sentiments evoked powerful emotions. I would recommend this thought-provoking anthology for anyone concerned about peace and the possibility of war.
