Edward Lear's nonsense poem about two unlikely sweethearts--an elegant owl and a beautiful cat--has found a perfect match in artist Jan Brett. She traveled to the Caribbean (the land where the Bong-tree grows, perhaps?) to research her illustrations as well as the settings, costume details, plants, and fish native to the area. Readers can follow an illustrated subplot of two yellow fish who also fall in love under the pea-green boat. A charming treatment of a classic children's poem. (Ages 3 to 7)
Book Description
The owl and pussycat have gone to sea often in the past 100 years, but never in a boat so green, on a sea so blue, into horizons and lands so glowing with color. Artist Erica Rutherford has created beautiful silk-screened images of Edward Lear’s much loved fantasy poem of two unlikely companions and a spare little boat. First published 150 years ago, “The Owl and the Pussycat” is impossible, nonsensical, whimsical, and it is in those very elements that its appeal lies.

No honey or money, but you'll find riches anyway.......2007-05-23
Jan Brett's Caribbean-inspired illustrations for the classic Edward Lear poem are teeming with life, and the effect is stunning. The colors, textures, and shapes are a visual treat. Each page also has a different pattern of "straw" border, adorned with a different tropical flower.
The pictures overflow with detail, to the point where there's even a sub-story (pardon the pun) involving two yellow fish.
I didn't give it the full 5 stars because the way the text is broken up across spreads makes it difficult to read the poem with any kind of flow, and because some of Brett's admittedly gorgeous illustrations could (and perhaps should) have had more of a connection to the text. For one notable example -- there's no pot of honey on the boat, and we never get a look at the money wrapped up in the five-pound note!
But there's no denying the beauty of the illustrations, and the Caribbean theme works surprisingly well. This is a great book for anyone -- for newcomers to the splendid silliness of the poem as well as for old fans of the poem who are looking for an edition with fabulous illustrations.
tropical children's book.......2007-05-10
I have always liked Lear's rhymes, especially this one, but more than the rhyme, it's the illustrations in this version that I like. We live in Florida and all our sub-tropical and tropical flora and fauna is in this book, beautifully illustrated and very recognizable to my 3 year old daughter. Following along with the secondary story of the two damsel fish (I think they're damselfish, but if they're not, the fault is my fish identification skills, not Brett's illustration) is really fun for her too. A bit further south, but still full of recognizable plants for us Floridians, is another of Jan Brett's books, "The Umbrella."
Wonderful Story.......2006-11-03
I have the Audio CD that Eric Idle did and it was wonderful. I listened to it with my 5 year-old and we both just loved it. He could understand most of what was going on and I could explain the rest. I'll start looking for other versions, too. Like the original poem and the various hardcover book versions. It is a truly charming story with a playful use of words. There is humor of the best kind here: they classic kind with jokes and puns for the adults and kids at the same time (like the old bugs bunny cartoons). I recommed this with NO reservations!
Fun to Look at & Read! 10 Month Old and 22 Month Old Both Love This One!.......2006-07-02
THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT is a delightful book. If you have never read Edward Lear's poem, you are in for a treat. Edward Lear has a delightful gift for rhythm and rhyme.
Illustrator Jan Brett has made this edition an especially fine one for children. The pictures have an extraordinary level of detail to them, and the color choices are brilliant. Each picture is two pages wide, and filled with objects we can look at and name. My baby has enjoyed looking at this one since the day we bought it.
I think our 22-month-old friend enjoys THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT because he can chime in with the words at the end of each line. I think the rhyme helps him remember what word comes next. He loves the book, too, and has asked to read it over and over.
When reading with my 10 month old, the story starts before the title page. Brett creates a little "before" story in two pictures, with the owl coming to find the pussycat and persuading her to go to sea with him. Another delightful touch is that Brett draws animals and plants under the water. Each page introduces a new character in the sea, so that by the end there are many fish and a turtle all following the boat beneath the water. A yellow fish that we see in a bowl next to the pussycat at the very beginning eventually leaps out to join another yellow fish in the sea.
Edward Lear's classic poem and Brett's setting of the story in lush, tropical paradise are charming, and much enjoyed by both children and adults at our house.
A truly beautiful book.......2006-03-28
This poem needs no introduction and when paired with the colorful drawings by Jan Brett it becomes a book every child should have in their collection.
Brett's drawings are carribean infused, with lots of colorful houses, fanciful sealife and tropical fruits to delight your children.
My kids (and I) all know this poem by heart from reading this book so often.

BRINGS THE WORK OF A GREAT HUMORIST TO CHILDREN.......1997-07-09
In an age when children are all fed the same diet of movies and TV shows, Eric Idle's work speaks to the individual, the special creative person in each child. The story, the style, the humor lets me laugh while reading it to children, and lets them laugh while hearing it (not to mention the laugh they get watching me laugh). The point? This is a wonderfully written story that pleases and amazes children and adults. If there is a person on AMAZON who hasn't already enjoyed Eric Idle's other work (not to mention his Monty Python work), then this is a great start

Beautiful, Brilliant, Detailed.......2007-01-20
I love the poem "The Owl and the Pussycat" - so much in fact that my husband is thoroughly sick of it. This book is a fabulous rendition of that poem. The illustrations of Jan Brett are lush, brilliantly colorful and have enough details in them to make this slim book worth reading many times. The Caribbean theme used throughout is a nice, novel idea. It makes me want to visit the land where the bong-tree grows. Recommended, and I don't even have any children!

Lear is so cool!.......2002-01-21
I owned a lovely illustrated Little Golden Book version of The Owl and the Pussycat as a toddler. My mother read it to me countless times. After it had been put away in a safe place for 7 years, it somehow came up in a conversation between my mother and me, and we found we could still recite the whole thing. It's a great, highly rhythmic poem that MUST be read aloud.
Now that I own an anthology of Edward Lear's work, my siblings and I have discovered the joy of Lear. We particularly enjoy the Jumblies ("their heads are green and their hands are blue and they went to see in a sieve"). Lear's work must be read aloud, with an audience, to be fully appreciated.
However, note that, while Lear has some really delightful poems, much of his work for children consists of limericks, many of which are not particularly clever. After pages and pages of "there once was a somebody from somewhere who did something odd, that silly old somebody from somewhere", it gets a little old. However, they are silly, and younger children might enjoy them more than my brothers and sisters and I (age range 12 to 18) did.
Great for children.......2000-04-02
Wonderful beginning book for children to spark an interest in poetry. I actually had this poem (the owl and the pussycat) read at my wedding... everyone enjoyed it.
