A great supplementary study aid.......2003-05-23

This is a very helpful study aid for Spanish speakers at most levels. I consider it a study aid only because it uniquely covers grammatical points that are geared towards the Intermediate and Advanced speaker but it certainly does not go into depth and definitely does not cover any complex structures. I found it to be very practical, with clear and concise explanations and examples provided. It's not a workbook so don't expect any practice exercises. The back of book serves as a handy reference and covers subject matters outside of the grammatical realm such business writing, idiomatic expressions, thematic vocabulary etc. This book is an excellent complement to a good grammar book. It definitely is handy for clarifying doubts from time to time and the grammar topics cover are the most typical reoccurring grammar points that present difficulty for learners of the Spanish language. The lessons are in English with relevant examples in Spanish.

Too bad the Cassell's Contemporary Italian/French/Spanish/German series are now out of print. I have them all the they are the best grammar books I own. I am a language buff and own several grammars and these can't be beat! I had been looking for the Cassell's Contemporary Italian recently and discovered the Langenscheidt Pocket Grammars are the Cassell's Contemporary series in new editions. They are identical.

Very Helpful.......2000-08-08

This book is very helpful if you need help on Spanish grammar, but it is mainly only good for that. With supplemental books (or other teaching tools) on the language, this book is great. A must for anyone trying to increase their competency in Spanish.

Great Medicine for Sleeping Saints.......2006-11-07

This book is one of the best in my library. Brown doesn't dance around it--he goes straight to the Big Questions: Why don't we see God moving in and through us? Why don't we see what they saw in the early church? Why, with rare exception, don't our prayers get answered? Worst of all, why do so many of us ACT like there's no problem? This book lit a fire under me. I'm praying more than ever before, and rediscovering what it means to really be in fellowship with Jesus... GET THIS BOOK!

Eye opening; life changing!.......2006-07-09

Even though this book was written several years ago, I think it is more relevant today than ever. It will get your attention quickly, because it addresses the frustrations so many are experiencing today in the "church" that has turned worldly, superficial, and powerless. We have tried so hard to be accepted by the world, something we are warned against very clearly, we have walked away from the basics of the Gospel. People are urged to "say a simple prayer" and everything will be taken care of, and they don't have a clue about the sin in their lives or its remedy! Dr. Brown addresses this openly and effectively. He comes from a pentecostal perspective, but non pentecostals will be able to relate and derive great benefit from his discourse. Don't miss this book. You will see why the "church" has drifted so far from its roots and why most of us don't want to attend any more, even if we still go out of habit or sense of duty.

Challenging the powerless Church.......2004-12-19

Book is very challenging. Brings a message to challenge the Church to examine why we lack the power of God. Its a convicting book. It will also bring us to a place of repentance.

Still in print under a different name........2003-02-03

I have been looking for this title for some time now and have had no luck. I own the Cassell's Contempory French, Spanish, and German and think they are wonderful. After searching through italian grammar books on Amazon, I discovered that the Langenscheidt Pocket Italian Grammar was formatted the same as the other Cassell's titles I own. Once I check the Langenscheidt French/Spanish/German Grammars, they were identical to the Cassell series, right down the the page numbers and listings in the table of contents. The Cassell's Contempory Italian is now Langenscheidt Pocket Italian Grammar...

a shame this is out of print!.......2002-04-29

This is a great book for improving your Italian. You need to know at least some basics of grammar to use the book effectively. However it is a complete review grammar, followed by lots of special sections (how to write letters, how to write essays etc etc). There is information in here that I haven't seen anywhere else. I recommend this very highly, for example, over the Proudfoot grammar. If you find a used copy, I suggest that you snap it up!

I purchased this book while studying German at a local university. It was a real help to me. What the text book does not cover, this handbook does. If you are serious about studying German, then you need this handbook.

Author is stretching it........2006-03-29

With friends in high places (such as Chopra, Williamson and Neale Donald Walsch), I have a feeling the author decided she wanted her own new age book and came up with this very stretched idea.

Everday words which lack spiritual meanings on their own are grouped into chapters such as COMMUNICATION (with words like Television, Friend and Joy), ENLIGHTENMENT (Competition, Priest, Education), HEALING, TRANSFORMATION...you get the point.

If you're going to use the word "transformation" in the title of a book, then the words themselves should be transformative. There are plenty of other words we MIS-use everyday which could have made for an actually satisfying, life-altering book. I personally will not think twice when I use the word "television." Will you??? Just because it is wrapped in a chapter titled COMMUNICATION does not make its etymology, or how we use the word, spiritual in nature.

A Useful Tool.......2005-06-25

One thing this book does is illustrate how carelessly we speak these days. We toss around terms like 'fascist' and 'liberal' without appreciation for their true meaning (as opposed to what we want them to mean in our specific conversation). Every impulse we have suddenly becomes a 'right' to be defended or decried, and everything that ever happens anywhere qualifies as 'news' (So Tom Cruise has a girlfriend...big deal).

OK, maybe this book doesn't tackle topics as heavy as these. But it is a great starting point to teach us all how to mind what we say. When we forget the meaning of words, we forget their power. And if we all are more aware of what we say to each other and how we say it, even the simplest of things, it can only bring us closer together. This is a worthwhile read for that alone.

A Book for Our Own Soul's Growth.......2004-07-11

Archbishop Desmond Tutu writes, "This is a beautiful book....a gem." Neal Donald Walsch's description: "an A-Z collection of words, the origin, the meaning and the impact of which author Garner explains with just the right touch, allowing us to 'see inside' these sounds and plumb from their depths the most effective use that we can make of them." Other notables that have conferred a thumbs up recommendation for this book are Barbara Marx Hubbard, Deepak Chopra, Sir John Templeton and Marianne Williamson. I am far from a notable but agree with their enthusiastic recommendations.

Garner has collected numerous time-honored words in our language and through sleuthlike diligence has ferret out the original intent or soul of each word. Garner explains, "The words we use everyday....are the symbols or links that convey our thoughts, feelings and intentions, and contain layers of meaning and nuance that comprise each word's 'soul'. These words spring from languages and circumstances now often lost to us. Poor translation and common, human misuse have blurred the meaning and spirit of so many words and caused hurt, conflict, war and misery for scores of individuals, communities and nations."

"Competition" is one surprising example of the misuse or misunderstanding of the soul of a word. The traditional use engenders a "them" and "us" comparison--a striving to win at all cost. From this distorted view comes fear there is not enough in life to go around. Garner discloses, "Competition is derived from the Latin competere, meaning to meet the requirements, also, to seek together....[and] conveys both a need to meet standards and to do so along with others." Garner informs us, "the person that we are meant to compete against, according to the soul of the word competition, is ourselves. There is no need for 'winners' or 'lossers' when everyone is seeking together. Then everyone wins, even at so-called competitive events." The original derivation of competition not only meant to meet requirements, but to do so along with others, not to dominate, but to bring out one another's gifts. Garner offers explanation on why, as she discovered, the distorted view of competition is fostered by a desperate desire for love and approval.

Garner's unordinary background (that includes law, clinical psychology, theology, also disarmament negotiation, along with a near death experience) allows her to offer inspirational insight on each soul of word and how it impacts on us. At the end of each word's discussion/examination, Garner transposes the soul of a word into stimulating questions. Her questions gently guide readers to observe/contemplate/assess significant aspects or areas of our lives, community and world. This allows a light of understanding to enter--and the transformation/healing to begin.

Garner accomplishes her mission. She not only reveals the hidden wisdom found in the ancient souls of words, but also, through this process, "shows us how words are symbols of Divine wisdom, gifts given to assist us in recognizing our inextricable, universal connection with God and one another, transcending all ideologies."
