An emperor amasses an army of hundreds of thousands, drawn from two continents, to invade a third continent and conquer a tiny, divided nation. Only a few hundred warriors stand against them. Yet the tiny nation is saved. It sounds like the plot of a preposterous fantasy novel. It is historical fact. In 481-480 B.C., King Xerxes of Persia raised forces in Asia and Africa and invaded Greece with an army so huge that it "drank rivers dry." Then they entered the mountain pass of Thermopylae and encountered 300 determined soldiers from Sparta....
Writer-artist Frank Miller and colorist Lynn Varley retell the battle of Thermopylae in the exciting and moving graphic novel 300. They focus on King Leonidas, the young foot soldier Stelios, and the storyteller Dilios to highlight the Spartans' awe-inspiring toughness and valor. Miller and Varley's art is terrific, as always; the combat scenes are especially powerful. And Miller's writing is his best in years. Read it.
Do not, however, read 300 expecting a strictly accurate history. The Phocians did not "scatter," as Miller describes. His Spartans are mildly homophobic, which is goofy in such a gay society. Miller doesn't say how many Greeks remained for the climactic battle--you'd think 300 Spartans and maybe a dozen others, when there were between 700 and 1,100 Greeks. Herodotus's Histories does not identify the traitor Ephialtes as ugly and hunchbacked, or even as Spartan. 300 establishes a believable connection between Ephialtes's affliction and behavior, but his monstrous appearance, King Xerxes's effeminacy, and the Persians' inexplicable pierced-GenX-African looks make for an eyebrow-raising choice of villain imagery. Nonetheless, 300 is a brilliant dramatization.
For the full story of the failed invasion, read Herodotus's Histories or, for a concise, graphic-novel retelling, Larry Gonick's great Cartoon History of the Universe: Volumes 1-7, From the Big Bang to Alexander the Great. For a lighthearted look at post-invasion Athens and a very young Alexander the Great, check out William Messner-Loebs and Sam Kieth's witty and gorgeous graphic novels, Epicurus the Sage Vol. I and Vol. II. --Cynthia Ward
Book Description
300 is a story of war and defiance as only Frank Miller can tell. Featuring the watercolor talents of painter Lynn Varley, 300 marks the first collaboration for these two creators since 1990's Elektra Lives Again. The five-part series is collected into a beautiful, 88-page hardcover volume, with each two-page spread from the comic presented as it was originally intended - as a single undivided page, greatly enhancing the graphic and narrative power of this immortal tale of heroic sacrifice. Make sure to check out the online preview of 300 here. And watch for news of this soon to be made major motion picture.

Great Book.......2007-06-23
Great Book. When you read it, you will see that the movie it quite true to it. It is a little pricey though. For working adults like myself, it was a good read that did not occupy much of my time. The whole book is less than 100 pages long. With hindsight, I would buy it again, especially if it was cheaper.
Frank Miller deserves a seat in Olympus as the god of sequential art.......2007-06-22
As a collection of the original comics, 300 is much better read in one sitting than reading the individual comics on a monthly schedule (which is what I did eight years ago). This book first achieved phenomenal success after its release as a single graphic novel (or hardcover trade, or whatever, I'm not going to argue terminology here) simply because after one issue you become so restless you just have to read the next one. That's why I enjoyed it much more in its current format; collecting the issues was a chore because Miller makes it so compulsively readable and the interim between issues killed me. The art is breathtaking, the writing appropriate, and the coloring by Liz Varley is brilliantly done. A lot of criticism has been directed toward this hardcover, chief among these being the fact that it is not historically accurate and that it is an excercise in racism while simultaneously objectifying women. Since I loved this comic, I respectfully disagree with all these arguments. Just look at the characterization of the Spartan Queen, done in only a handful of panels, which show that Miller did devote time and thought to what kind of people Spartan women were to survive in such a warlike society. This book is about soldiers, above all else, and during that time soldiers were men who protected their families at the cost of their own lives. The slave-oracle of the Ephors is a device Miller uses to highlight the lecherous and corrupt natures of these so-called holy men, but it is not intended to objectify women (and I meant no offense by calling the girl a 'device.') Miller definitely did not plan to espouse any racist views either; he simply conceived a cosmopolitan Persian army consisting of dozens of conquered nations and hundreds of tribes as a disorganized force unable to match the dicipline of the Spartans who received identical training in war. Authorial intent is what we must consider when reading 300 which uses Greece in 480 B.C as its setting, so it is not meant to comment on current issues in society, but issues that, according to historical speculation, were common at the time. I enjoyed this book because I was looking for a beautifully-drawn, action packed read, and this is exactly what I found. Recommended to all Frank Miller fans and artists starting out in the comics medium.
300.......2007-06-14
Great graphic novel, Frank Miller never disappoints. Definitely see the movie as well and pick up the Sin City graphic novels. This one is definitely a classic, and the artwork is beautiful.
Gorgeous art work and a classic story.......2007-06-08
Okay, I'll admit I got this after seeing the movie (which I loved). I've never really gotten into graffic novels but maybe I should since i enjoyed this book so much. The movie really was very faithful to the book's visuals. The artwork is great!
just like the movie.......2007-06-06

Book Description
What does it mean to turn one of the great graphic novels of our time into a major motion picture? In 1998, Frank Miller shook the comics world with his groundbreaking series 300. Marking Miller's first collaboration with watercolor artist Lynn Varley (Ronin, The Dark Knight Returns) in over a decade, 300 was a gritty reimagining of a battle in which 300 Spartan soldiers fought to hold back the entire Persian army. The series won five Eisner Awards, including Best Limited Series, Best Writer/Artist (Miller) and Best Colorist (Varley). 300: The Art of the Movie takes you behind the scenes as director Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead) adapts 300 to the silver screen. With 200 pages of production photos, concept art and much, much more, 300: The Art of the Movie is sure to delight Miller fans and movie buffs alike.

A great companion..........2007-05-28
A great companion to a great movie and a great graphic novel.
Not often do you get to see behind the blue (or green) curtain to see how a movie is made.
This book gives you that insight!
Newsflash: Persians are Real People!.......2007-05-16
This is an interesting making-of book about an interesting movie based on an interesting graphic novel. I bought this book to see if I could get a clue as to why the Persians were portrayed as inhuman Orc-like mutant monsters, and while the book has something to say about the 'how,' it is curiously silent on the 'why.' Unlike fantasy creatures like Orcs, Persians (also called Iranians) are real people. They were regular folk in the days of the Battle of Thermopylae, and they continue to be regular folk today. I would think that Christians in particular would take issue with the misrepresentations of Biblical history detailed in 300: The Art of the Film. The Xerxes in "300" is the same Xerxes as in "One Night with the King"!!!
WOW.......2007-05-13
If You really Like this movie and besides you LOVE VFX, this book is just made for you, is the perfect combination of Art and CG Effects.
A "Must Have" For Movie Lovers.

incredible.......2007-05-13
This goes beyond the movie and helps you see all the work and creativity involved with the scenes. Definitely recommend this to anyone who is a 300 fanatic!!!

Fantastically Healthy Recipes..........2007-06-27
Great cookbook...wonderful for those who are looking for ways to cook Mediterranean or for the experts who want to add this book to their collection. I love it !!!! :)
Work up front.......2007-05-12
I haven't tried any of the recipes yet because most of them require the prior preparation of a stock or sauce (recipes are also provided for these)in order to prepare the main recipe. The recipes sound good and flavorful, but I need to make the time to prepare the sauces/stocks and put them in the freezer so I can make these recipes on a moments notice. So if you're looking for a cookbook that you can just pick up and instantly make the recipe, this is not the one for you.
My Least Favorite Cookbook.......2007-02-06
Nothing to talk about. Just a very plain average cookbook with little or no originality. Very disappointing
The Everything Mediterranean Cookbook.......2006-02-17
This book (in general)contains a basically half dozen base recipies, such as stock, to which various ingredients are added.
Not authentic, but good.......2006-01-11
I like mediterranean food but this cookbook seems tailored for Americans. It's not authentic. But don't let me spoil your appetite.

Customer Reviews:
Not a book I'll be using frequently.......2007-05-17
A lot of the recipes tend to include ingredients that are not readily available -- many cookbooks will suggest more common substitutes, but this one doesn't. Many recipes take far more time than I care to spend on preparation for everyday meals. I found only a handful of the recipes to be appealing.
Also, if you don't own (or care to own) a food processor, this book isn't for you -- nearly every recipe involves one in some way.
Finally, the way the book itself is laid out makes the recipes difficult to follow while cooking.
Nice Cookbook.......2007-05-14
Some of the recipes I probably won't use, but the recipes I do use are pretty tasty.
Disappointed.......2007-05-14
I was very disappointed in this cookbook. A lot of the recipes have hard to find ingredients as well as use a lot of ingredients that are not allowed in phase one of the GI diet. I have yet to cook anything out of the book!
The Everything Glycemic Index Cookbook.......2007-05-12
I was a little disappointed in this book. True, there are a few good recipes, but several of them required items not usually in one's pantry. I have only cooked one recipe.
So inadequate I sent it back - don't waste your money.......2007-04-19
I've been following Rick Gallop's fantastic books "The g.i. Diet" and "Living the g.i. Diet" and was looking for a good gi cookbook. I picked this one and, after a thorough review, was VERY disappointed - so much so that I returned it and I've never returned a book in my life. I recently received "The Low GI Diet Cookbook" by Brand-Miller, Foster-Powell and McMillan-Price and it is an outstanding high-quality book full of gorgeous photos and recipes that I'll be using everyday!!!! It covers everything you need to know about the diet and thensome. This is truly a 5* book. Also purchased "The Good Carb Cookbook" by Woodruff and it's nice; but not great. Printed on EXTREMELY cheap quality paper which had torn pages when received - pity more care wasn't taken in the production of this book. No photos at all.

The Truth About This Book.......2007-06-06
Ok here is the honest truth about this book. The biggest thing wrong with it is the title. The title suggest that after reading this book you will have the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the exam. NO WAY!! Not even close. The title should be "An Introduction to SQL Server" because it introduces alot of the concepts on a very non detailed high level fashion. I am taking a training class at this place called techskills and had it not been for them, i would have flunked the exam. Their practice questions are very very very similar to the real exam. When taking their practice questions i had to go to server books online to figure out the answers. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK AS A STUDY GUIDE FOR THE 70-229 EXAM!!!!!!!!
Dont buy! Voucher is expired as of June 2004.......2007-05-10
One of the reasons I bought this expensive set of books for the discount. Later, I found out that voucher expired on 2004. I felt cheated.
Essential for getting Certs.......2007-03-13
This is essential for preparing, but don't think that everything you need to know is in this book, be sure to check out some practice tests too. These books actually make decent reference books too if you are in a pinch. Note that these are not targeting the current Certification available for VS2005.

A little bit of everything, not much of anything..........2007-05-26
The problem with books such as these is that they do not always provide enough detail to really help you get the job done. This results in your having to buy additional books to supplement your knowledge.
In my case, I am currently remodeling my kitchen. I have never done this kind of work before; BUT, I figure that I am reasonably bright so I can learn as I go, right? I purchsed this book as it seemed to provide just about the best general reference out there.
As I mentioned above, though, it does not always provide a great deal of detail. The section on hanging drywall, for example, does not cover the subject with enough depth to teach an amateur how to do it cleanly and neatly. You will likely have to buy a specific drywall book for more information. Ditto for the section on windows, laying tile, etc.
The one subject so far that did seem to contain enough detail to get the job done was the section on wiring. I was able to add several outlets (and I have never done this kind of thing before) with the aid of this book alone.
I give it 4 stars as it serves it's purpose (an overview on home renovation) admirably. If you really want to learn these things in detail, though, you may want to look at the Black and Decker "Complete" how to books. In fact, this book appears to be a kind of "greatest hits" of the single subject books. Wide, but not deep.
Novice Reference.......2007-05-16
This book is a super resource for anyone who wants to do home improvement, but knows little or nothing about the process. Lots of photos with technical terminology enable the novice to communicate with the pros.
Black & Decker is the king of home improvement books..........2007-03-08
This book continues the excellence in the line of the Black and Decker series of "Photo Guide" books. No other book comes close to providing the quantity and quality of photos. The photos are clear and much better at communicating the task then standard illustrations. Every project is detailed with a handful of photos.
Great book. Great to have on the shelf as a reference book. Awesome book for first-time home owners that want to have a handle on do-it-yourself projects.
Best home improvement book for pros and novices.......2007-01-11
I find this book excellent due to the simple directions, tips, and photos and drawings that are clear enough so the reader can see all the details. Some improvement books have illustrations that leave you scratching your head in confusion.
an excellent book for both beginners and professionals........2007-01-10
It is an excellent book not only for handyman beginners with clear and beautiful photos, but also for construction professionals to review lots of details covering a typical residential building.

Built for the World's Fair, it was initially granted a 20-year permit; this permit was thankfully extended and now the Eiffel Tower is one of the world's most famous structures, having become practically synonymous with Paris itself and receiving more than six million visitors annually.
Customer Reviews:
Best Book Ever.......2007-06-27
I've been wanting to build model of Eiffel Tower for about 20 years. I've been drawing the main structure from bits and pieces I was able to collect over the years, and a lot of guess work. Then I came this book, and it was everything I've been looking for. It has all the dimensions and details you need to build an acurate model. It has details of the base of legs, the tower structure, original floor layouts and mechanical plans.
This book is worth every penny, I wish I would of found it 20 years ago.
A must for construction engineers.......2007-02-09
What can you say? You got all the original drawings, the explanations, and also the calculations.
It is amazing the way they did things in the past.
Also if you like history, the book is full of it.
The book is a complete review of all the facts of the Eiffel Tower.
You don't need to be an engineer to enjoy the book, but if you are, I bet you'll enjoy it even more.
The pictures are excellent.
Fantastic Book!.......2007-01-21
This is a wonderful reproduction of Gustav Eiffel's original design. Every detail of the Eiffel Tower is represented here. The book is HUGE, though, so make sure you have room for it.

The bouquet’s colors, arrangement, and even fragrance, can express the mood and style of the ceremony, from the bridal gown and attendants’ attire to the décor of the reception room. How to decide? Each of the 300 bouquets displayed here comes with lavish close-up photos and careful descriptions of each detail, with recommendations for the kinds of dresses and ceremonies they best complement. Every color theme receives special treatment (with price range indicators), from whites, ivories and creams to yellows and oranges, reds and pinks, blues and purples, as well as variegated and original color schemes.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty but not exciting.......2007-05-15
I bought this book when I was trying to plan my wedding, reading all the reviews I felt that it could be an excellent resource. On the good side, the pictures are really beautiful with close ups of each arrangement. It is also very well organized with each section focusing on the main colors in the bouquet. Unfortunately, I found the bouquets themselves to be completely unexciting, I got more ideas flipping through wedding magazines. There was not a single arrangment that I ended up showing my florist as an example.
Just what I needed.......2007-01-18
HI! This book had just what I needed to determine what kind of boquet I wanted. It was all PICTURES of RELAVENT stuff and not just a bunch of words. Also it lists out what kind of flowers are in each boquet and what they mean. That is awesome!
A great place to get ideas for your bouquet.......2007-01-10
This book has so many lovely, colorful photos of wedding flowers you will be spoiled for choice. I found it an excellent armchair guide to the many options out there for the bridal bouquet. Even if you have no idea where to start, this book will give you plenty of ideas for picking a stunning modern wedding bouquet.
Wedding Bouquets: Over 300 Designs for Every Bride.......2007-01-04
It was a great book to get a lot of ideas from and had many unique looks.
Wedding bouquet inspiration.......2006-11-06
No idea what kind of bouquet to choose? No problem. This book offers hundreds of full-colour pictures of stunning wedding bouquets. You might want to think about what kind of wedding you want before you pick it up, but if you have a theme, style and colour scheme in mind this is a great little book to turn to for floral inspiration. It's small, lightweight and packed with ideas - whatever colour scheme or style you're after there's bound to be a bouquet here that's perfect. It's also useful to take to your florist so you can point to the kind of thing you want as that way misunderstandings are avoided.

Customer Reviews:
Not what I expected.......2007-04-19
Not just titled the bible, many people consider it to be the bible of mixers. Unfortunately, I disagree. I'm not sure what I was expecting- I guess I was looking for new uses for my mixer along with a great set of recipes. There's about 4 pages of tips for using your mixer.
Instead most are regular recipes that look for some way to use the mixer- usually when it makes no sense. Take the soups for example. Sorry, I'm not going to use my mixer as a strainer. How about using the mixer to mash your potatoes? No thanks. I've got cheap, easy, and effective hand tools to take care of those tasks.
It's not a total loss. The sausage, bread, and dessert sections are great. That's a PRACTICAL use for my mixer. All in all, this is primarily a recipe book with little to do with your stand mixer. The bible, it is not
Fully Reccomend!.......2007-04-12
I bought this w/ my KA pasta attachments & it's just wonderful. I'm one of those that's had a standmixer for 2yrs & never used it to it's full potential. So this has become a wonderful companion!
Why volume in metrics?.......2007-02-24
I haven't tried any of the recipes in this book yet, but there seems to be a good mix of everyday vs. gourmet.
What bothers me is that on the right-hand side of each recipe are the volume amounts listed in metric. What good is that? Why are the weights not listed where appropriate? Anyone with a modern measuring cup can look on one side or the other for the cup or the ml measurement. What were they thinking? It looks like they were trying to impress someone. Well, it doesn't impress me but rather annoys me.
This book lives up to it's name.......2007-02-08
This is an excellent book that will result in your using your mixer more than in the past. If you only have one book for your stand mixer, this is the one. Great basic recipes that you will use.
I love my KA and this book.......2007-02-02
I have owned a KA stand mixer since 1976, just upgraded my old faithful. Before this book, I made cakes & cookies and they were wonderful but now I've expanded to other uses and attachments.
It's so much fun to make my own pasta and this book really walks you through the steps. I also agree with another viewer, KA should pack this treasure in the mixer box. Well worth the money and Amazon has the best price as always.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2006-03-26
I purchased "The Lawyer's Career Change Handbook" along with other books written for people who have (or will soon have) law degrees, but are not sure they want to practice law. This book has been an invaluable tool in helping me realize where I want to go with my life. What I like most about it is that it includes exercises to make its readers think critically about their own skills, interests, and requirements in the workplace. I find that the book is very practical, and although I am just begining my job search, it has been helpful as a tool to prioritize what I'm looking for in an employer.
When considering whether to purchase this book, I read some highly critical reviews, but bought the book anyway. If you are serious about looking for a job which is more suited to you, I would encourage you to buy it too - and read it with a pencil and pad of paper close at hand.
For those of you who, like me, are very frustrated with law - whether you are already practicing or not, I want to share this passage, which summed up everything I feel about my experiences in the field of law. On page 12, Hindi Greenberg writes:
"One of my clients recently wrote a stinging evaluation of law practice, listing the things he dislikes. In his words: 'I disilke (1) the interpersonal nastiness of litigation, (2) the combatitiveness of litigation, (3) the win-at-all-cost attitude of litigation, (4) the crisis mentality of litigation, (5) that my goal is to defeat my opponent and my opponent's goal is to defeat me, (6) the pressure of being expected to do work that my oponent can never criticize - an absolutely unrealistic expectation, (7) that I am always around people who are angry at someone, (8) that I cannot be fair or reasonable, as I see fairness and reason, but have to fight for every advantage I can get out of a situation, (9) that I cannot spend my life working with a group of dedicated people to achieve a common goal but instead must constantly fight other people to achieve success.'"
Particularly with respect to number 7, this has been my experience over two summers of clerking for law firms.
The afternoon before I began reading this book, I went out for coffee with a fellow law student. I tried to explain to her all of the reasons that I am uninterested in a career as a lawyer - but no matter what I said, she was adamant that I will be able to find a fulfilling legal career, telling me, "not all law firms are like the ones you have worked for. There are plenty of areas of law where you never have to fight at all. There are better lawyers to work for. There are better areas of law to practice in." This book made me realize that I'm not being subborn or overly emotional, or closed-minded about career options. I am grateful to Hindi Greenberg for showing me that I am not alone, and that, frankly, there is nothing wrong with me for not wanting to spend the next 30 or 40 years of my life fighting for a living, or trying to do perfect work which can never be criticized.
In addition to giving me much-needed affirmation that I am not being an idiot, because being a lawyer is not for everyone, this book provides many practical tools for developing a job search, and for finding a career which suits my personality.
Another great resource in this book is the resume writing guide. As a first year law student, Career Services held a (mandatory) resume-writing workshop, teaching us how to make legal resumes - which are vastly different from non-legal resumes. On the brink of looking for a non-legal job, I found myself perplexed as to what a non-legal resume was supposed to look like. This book has examples of functional resumes versus legal resumes, as well as interviewing tips which I found to be infinetly more helpful than the tips provided by Career Services over the past few years.
I was very happy with this book, and would highly recommend it to anyone who is unhappy with his or her legal career, and definetly to law students who find themselves wondering whether there might be more worthwhile careers out there.
Repetitive Rehash.......2003-09-03
This is a book like the dozens of other career change ones out there - you can find this information in publications from years ago, and with much better advice. No new information, and would only help lawyers who would lack the imagination to think of "legal publishing" or "in-house counsel" as career options. Truly unhelpul.
Good Resource That WIll Make You Think.......2003-06-21
When I picked up this book I knew that I had always had an interest in law, but was unsure if I wanted to work for a law firm. Before going to law school I wanted an idea of exactly what my options might be after school.
This book helped me a lot. I have not made a final decision, but I am definitely closer than when I picked up the book. The two most helpful sections to me were the assessment exercises that helped me think about what skills I have and the last 2 sections on actual jobs available.
If you just want someone to tell you what job is right for you then don't choose this book. If you want/need to think about yourself, your life, your skills, and what you want your job and your life to be then this book is a tool that will help you on your journey.
Packed With Great Information.......2003-06-13
As a psychologist who works with lawyers, I have found this book to be an invaluable resource for my clients. It addresses the full range of issues that confront someone questioning whether to leave a legal career altogether or to switch to a different legal environment. No book should give clients the "answer" to their dilemma, and this one does not pretend to. I have found it extremely helpful in how it poses important questions to consider, offers wise advice, and provides in-depth help with resources and information. My clients have found it reassuring, encouraging and informative. It's an inexpensive resource that every lawyer or law student considering a shift in career direction should review.
This book can be a LIFECHANGER!.......2003-05-07
I read ýThe Lawyerýs Career Change Handbook,ý and found Ms. Greenbergýs ideas and advice extremely useful. I found the self-assessment exercises, which most of us lawyers try to avoid, extremely helpful in clarifying why my previous work was unsatisfying and in what direction I needed to move in order to find work that would better fit my needs. The job ideas, extensive resource listings, and insightful comments by Ms. Greenberg also greatly benefited me in deciding upon my next career incarnation. The final assist was when I consulted individually with Ms. Greenberg. She gave me creative guidance, solid advice and wonderful support to pursue my current work. ... She is an insightful, generous human being.
