Takumi vs. Ryosuke.......2005-05-09

At last, Takumi faces off against Ryosuke Takahashi and his RX-7. The race is exciting, intense, and completely epic. Even more so than the other races so far, it is as much a mental battle as it is a physical one. The writer/artist Shigeno does a great job in choreographing it and really digs into Takumi and Ryosuke's personalities and thought processes, especially Ryosuke. In Book 1 he seems like an arrogant rich snot but by Books 4 and 5 you understand that he is all about being the best, in racing and in everything else. He is the ultimate competitor. This is one of the best showdowns in Initial D.

Dont let the racing bug bite.......2004-07-15

Initial D is possibly the most addictive manga I have ever read. The pace is fast moving, and as the story moves along, all you want is to see the next race!!

The art work is gritty and unique; not quite the bubbly norm of other mangas.

It's also pretty educational.. My brother has absolutely no knowledge of cars whatsoever, and now he stops me in the middle of the street to point out what cars he recognises.. what is tuned, what isn't etc!!!

and if you are up to vol.5, the suspence must be killing you.. it's the famous 'Hachi Rocku' VS the Akagi 'White Comet'!! I'm not giving anything away (^_^)y

Great Series, For Both Girls and Boys.......2003-04-15

This is a really great series and I enjoy reading it. My guy friends didn't know I read it until I told them and they told me it was asupposed to be a guy's manga, but I told them, it has chicks in it too!

The first part in the first book was kinda disturbing but that's the only part like that that happens...that is, except for Iketani's mindless babbling about the girl of his dreams.

I would recommend this book to everyone I know, especially people who like cars, such as myself, and people who want to learn about cars. This manga has taught me somethings I never knew about downhill racing.

Anyway, when I read this book, I can't wait to see what happens next in the series and I'm always mad when I get to the end of the book and the interesting part is about to happen. I always have to go back to the book store and get the next book when it comes out, but I have to say, it's definitely worth it!!

MY SON LOVED IT.......2007-01-05

I bought this for my son. He is interested in anything regarding Driving, racing and cars in general. I asked him how he liked this item and he said that "it was great". So, based on that, I would say if you have an older teenager or person in your life who is into cars, etc., this would be a good gift. And if for yourself, I can only tell you that my 17 year old son thought it was GREAT.

Takumi vs. Cute Racer Chicks.......2005-05-11

In this book, there is the question of whether Takumi can handle racing in places other than Mt. Akina. Over at Mt. Usui he goes up against a pair of female racers who call themselves Impact Blue and drive a Nissan Sil 80. Shuichi Shigeno, as always, can be counted on to produce a tightly illustrated racing scene. Some of Impact Blue's dialogue gets a little over-the-top during the race, but it's all good fun. So far, Natsuki ("Natalie" in the English translation) has been the only regular female character, and it's nice to see more female characters getting introduced into the spotlight. At the same time though, there is a bit of a cheesecake factor put into Book 6 because of the girls and the author admits it in a really funny caption. On the other hand, it actually helps bring out the personalities and insecurities of the main characters. Iketani ("Cole") also gets a lot of good character development in this book.

The races continue..........2003-07-07

Another volume of Initial D. People who have seen Takumi race have been wondering for a while if he can pull his magic off on a mountain other than his normal Akina run; we finally discover the answer. No, I won't tell you what it is. Cole has the chance to take his relationship to the next level, will he do it? And finally, summer's over and school begins, will this mean that Tak's racing will be put on hold?

This is a good volume. You really get to see some great racing scenes, it's definately worth the ten bucks you need to pay for it. If you've read the other five volumes and liked them, I'm betting that you'll like this one, too. If you haven't read the earlier parts or you didn't like them, then don't buy this quite yet. The character designs can be a little weird at times, but it really isn't that bad, they grow on you. You'll get used to it, and hopefully it won't get in the way of your enjoying a good story.

Surprisingly addicting.......2003-09-05

I was surprised at how addicting this book was. I wasn't necessarily expecting to enjoy a manga about racing, since I'm not into cars at all, but it hooked me right away! I went out and bought the next one as soon as I could. At first, I didn't like the drawing style, but it grew on me. This series is definitely worth a look!

Inital D.......2003-09-04

This is a pretty good comic book. It's Manga, So you'll have to read it backwards. If you like "Fast and the Furious" you'll probably like this too. It's about an 18 year old who drives a Treuno Eight-Six around the mountains of a town called Akina for his tofu delivbery job. He stumbles into the world of racing by accident and discovers that he is actually quite good at it. Towards the end of the book finds himself in a race against the Red Suns top noch racer. This is a #1 hit series in Japan and was also turned into a cartoon series.

Takumi vs. Shingo.......2005-05-09

This is the one where Takumi dukes it out against the maniac Shingo Shouji and his Civic. It is an awesomely drawn race as usual. The artist also does a great job in portraying Shingo as a thoroughly dangerous and reckless person. Takumi's exchange with his dad after the race is hilarious and says a lot about racers' mentality. The second half of the book is a lead-in for the Book 5 showdown between Takumi and Ryosuke Takahashi. Even though Ryosuke is the big "enemy" racer so far, the more I learned about him, the less hostile of an opinion I had towards him.

Vol 1 Ok, but then it goes downhill fast........2003-02-09

I picked up vol 1 out of curiosity, since I had seen all the anime (1st, 2nd, movie, sidestory) and wanted to see how the story was different. Vol 1 is great, and I would recommend that.

However, after vol 2. they americanized the names, which I think was stupid. Also, some of their technical terms for driving (understeer, oversteer, etc) in their glossary are lame. Maybe they need to find somebody who actual understands road racing to help explain some of it.

Last of all, the scale for the map of Gunma prefecture is off by a large margin. It looks like they gave it a 200km (124miles) scale. This is absurd, since it makes Gunma approx maybe 1000+ km (600+ miles) tall and wide. Impossible since Japan isn't even that wide/tall there. I know.. I lived near that area. Guess it was supposed to be 20km.. that would make more sense.

Who cares?.......2003-02-01

This manga from Shuichi is awesome, on of the best ones i've read. So what the translation is inaccurate, the storyline makes sense and the art work is great. Finally a manga with a realistic view on downhill racing. Every moment of it is exciting and I can't wait for the next volume...

An Insult to Shuichi Shigeno.......2003-01-28

Not 100% authentic
I don't mind if Tokyopop (TP) rephrase some dialogues, but to totaly butcher the whole idea of the dialogue is unforgivable. TP should also follow through to the idea of not changing names, coz I find that using the original names in the begining and changing their names on the following volumes very ridiculous.
If you are a die hard fan, stick to the anime or buy the import manga... (100% authentic)

americanized, not tokyopopized........2003-01-17

The story and the drawings in the book are top par and all this talk bout the story not being "true" to the real story, it is all bull. the creators of the american version had to make a book that was popular in japan a readable book in america. in tokyo the humor and the slang is different. they had to make the text make sense in english and to our culture.

some humor would make absolutely no sense when translated, or it would get the quick boot by the editors because it was an american pressure point, a la columbine. so some of the text had to be changed. also, who really cares if mogi said she was guilty about her godfather paying so much for her in american culture than in japanese culture. they had to make the text in a japanese culture feel the same in an american culture. to a japanese man, a joke about japanese men being short would fall through just like a japanese joke about american men being tall would. we're not tall to us and they aren't short to them.

above all, the story kicks some major and the drawings are stuff that you would see in a 2 hour portrait. try to get the initial d anime while it is in original japanese language with english subtitles, its most likely "truer" than what is going to be in the american release.

The beauty of this book is how the author captures not only the aspects of top-tier professional drifting, but also how the sport has maintained a close connection to the people that love it. Must have book on Drifting!.......2006-12-21

I bought this book along with 2 other drifting books from Amazon.com after getting excited about the concept from the movie "Fast and the Furious, Tokyo Drift". I like this book not only for the tons of rockin' pictures, but the true insight to what the drifing world is all about. You can tell from the content that that the author is THE authority on drifting. Everything from the history, lifestle, and the ladies of drifting are eloquently covered.

Drifting: Sideways From Japan to America by Antonio Alvendia is a real nice looking hard covered book that sits on my coffee table as a conversation piece. I really wish I didn't buy the other books on drifting that are just collect dust on my bookshelf. Maybe Amazon will let me return those.

The Best Action Photographs.......2006-10-25

I love this book. It has awesome photography by Antonio. You can feel the action in the photos. You feel like you're right there in the crowd when they hand the trophy to the winner. It doesn't feel like a documentary, you feel like you're behind the lense. I'm glad I bought the book. The book is hardcover and the quality of the photographs get your adrenaline flowing. My visitors are so fascinated by the photo's of these high performance cars sliding out of control with blankets of smoke trailing their tires. I'm real happy with this purchase.

Outstanding book!.......2006-10-17

To say that Antonio lives and breathes drifting would be an understatement. His love for this young (in the US) motor sport has taken him all over the United States and Japan with frequent stops in Hawai'i to check in on the scene there as well. With his camera always at the ready and a huge smile on his face, Antonio has documented the growth of the drifting phenomenon here and abroad, the results of which can be found in this book. Since he is a photographer by trade, the pictures are top notch, but the real surprise to me was the narration of the book as he covers everything from the canyon runs with the Battle Swing and Swing Battle AE86 crews from many years ago to the current professionally sanctioned Formula D series. All of this history and information was pulled from his own first hand accounts, as well as from interviews with current professional drivers on the Formula D and D1 circuits. If you have any interest in drifting AT ALL, you need to pick up this book. I cannot recommend it enough!

This book is about a teen named tak, he drives a corolla 1886. Witch is known as the 86 from Mt.Akina. He is a drifter. There is a group called the Emperor's, and they want to take over the drifting seen with there four wheeled drive evo's. Tak is going out with a girl that is getting paid by anther man to go out with and she is getting paid by that same man for sex. She is in love with but she is still with the other man. Tak in the middle of the night he gets a call from someone and tells him she is dating the other man.
