5 out of 5 stars Ryoko what happend...........2003-10-26

Ryoko so heart broken not knowing what to do because her world is just falling apart she doesn't know what to do anymore, but then we are at azumi's house and she recieves a call, from who, it is still a mystery, she goes to school and challemges ryoko to a fight, well while they are fighting it starts to get personal and they really fight, but ryoko just runs away hides in the bathroom and starts to cry, she has never cried, it is like a faucet that won't stop, and we see azumi waitng and shizumas personal employee asks azumi if she will come back, azumi says she will, she has to clear her mind, she does come back all fresah but with a look that you do not want to see they fight but the winner ends up to be azumi, of course the principle was watching the whole thing and said no matter what ryoko does when she falls she always falls forward and never back, you see her lying on azumi and azumi half alive, then we see ryoko in the hospital and hitmoi comes to check up on her, and then you see shizuma coming and he is standing there and says hey, he goes closer and closer to her and dshe is like get away, they are close and you think he is going to kiss her and then he says"whyda always have to hog the fun" shaking her, it is hilarious!!

5 out of 5 stars Jealousy rears its ugly head...........2003-03-20

If you have read the first two books, then you know that Ryoko Mitsurugi thinks she is a samurai, that she and a girl named Azumi Kiribiyashi are vieing for the chance to date a certain young man, and that their school uses the revolutionary K-fight system. None of this should be news to you.

But Ryoko's world is starting to fall apart, and her sanity is slowing crumbling away. After hearing some bad news, Ryoko is shaken to the core and starts to lose herself in grief. She is no longer able to be the samurai that she was just days before, and loses fights that her old self would have won in moments.

She's not the only one affected by this. Azumi also goes off the deep end, only not as far and in a different way. And the school feels the backlash when the two best female fighters suddenly go at it in a K-fight. But this K-fight is not being filmed like the others, and the grounds of the school become the arena where a fight to the death takes place.

This is nowhere near as funny as the other books, but it wasn't meant to be. This is meant to change the story, and the lives of the characters. It is serious because it needs to be serious; the story wouldn't work otherwise.

Go out and buy this book! Or at least read it. I promise, you won't look at Real Bout High School the same way ever again.

3 out of 5 stars It's not bad, but there's better out there..........2004-08-16

Sometimes, while I'm reading this series, I am interested and excited about the events, but there are a lot of times when I'm just bored. In this volume, Ryoko Mitsurugi and Shinsengumi have to go participate in battles at Dragon Land. While I still think the artwork looks pretty awesome, the panels still feel overcrowded and I'm having problems caring about what happens to the characters. In this book or any of the previous ones, there's never really all that much time devoted to allowing the readers to really get to know and care about the characters. Instead, there are a lot of fights, which, while often fun, aren't enough, at least for me. Judging from some of the reviews I've seen for the other volumes, however, I seem to be in the minority with my opinions about this series.

5 out of 5 stars Every day is real boutish..........2003-02-26

Real Bout High School is one of my favorite series. Ryoko Mitsurugi, the samurai idol of Daimon High, is tall, beautiful, and kicks major a**. She reveres the samurai of the past and seeks to emulate them in the modern world. When the K-fights are introduced, she goes at it with her 'enemy' Shizuma Kusanagi and her rival Azumi Kiribiyashi. In her free time she practices with her bokken and dreams of dating the captain of the Kendo club, whom Azumi is also chasing.
This is an incredibly fun, action packed series and I can't wait till the next book comes out!

3 out of 5 stars sometimes fun, but confusing.......2004-08-18

In this book, Ryoko becomes head of a band of women that is supposed to clear the streets of trouble-makers. While the characters were occaisionally interesting, there were really too many of them introduced in such a short time for to actually get to know them. I don't think this series has ever actually been good at allowing readers to get to know the characters, and this volume is one of the worst at this. The artwork is still goregeous, but the series is confusing and, for me, getting boring.

5 out of 5 stars enter the new samuri girls!!.......2003-10-26

this series was good and funny, in this series they enter new girls, one of them is a ninja that has problems with bombs and she tends to get carried away with them, poor ryoko having to clean up the mess thry mad by picking fights with the wrong people, this series is funny.....and if your a wrestler pro then you should read it they have a girl on the team that is a wrestler

4 out of 5 stars The 4th volume of Real Bout is a little off the mark..........2003-04-17

Truth to tell, I didn't like this volume as much as I did the others. It introduced too many new characters in too short a time for me to really connect with any one of them, and the plot seemed to stray from what it started as. But it wasn't a total loss. It was a fun trip and a new take on the world of Real Bout High School. The regular characters are still pretty cool and interesting to read about, and the art is still top-notch.

So, fans of Real Bout, you should read this one! And if you aren't a fan, I'd suggest you start with the earlier books, otherwise you will be lost.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Breaking down barrier.......2006-06-04

"Real Bout High School" gains speed and strength in its second volume, as we get to know the characters and see a few more entertaining, action-packed battles. Reiji Saiga still has some flaws in the series -- like how new characters are introduced -- but it's still high-octane fun.

A new K-fight is about to begin: Star fighter Shizuma is facing off against a TEACHER, Mr. Saotome. And though Ryoko pretends that it has nothing to do with her, Shizuma's victory changes her life even more, now that Real Bout is ruled by battle rather than by school rules. She certainly isn't getting much studying done.

But Ryoko is thinking about other things than fighting, such as the handsome, quiet Tatsuya. She prepares for a school play, scrabbles with various thugs on the school grounds, rejects creepy guys, and threatens shutterbug/stalker Daiseku. But then Ryoko receives a shocking piece of news about Tatsuya, which could derail all her hopes...

The second volume of "Real Bout High School" is a bit slower and more character-based than the first. The whole first chapter is crammed with fighting, and Ryoko, Shizuma and another guy have a humorous battle later on ("Justice is served!" Ryoko says cheerfully, sitting on a downed enemy). It wouldn't be "Real Bout" if nobody fought.

But the pace slows down as we get to know Ryoko, Tatsuya and all the other characters. Saiga has a tendency to just drop the characters in without introduction or warning, so it's nice to get to know them. And there's even more humor in this one, such as Ryoko and Hitomi spending the day together. Toxic cooking, superhuman workouts, and surreal graduation practice ensues!

Ryoko gets the most expansion in this volume; we get to see her strong, embarrassed, freaked out, and explosive. We also get some idea of her insecurities, and what makes her tick. Tatsuya is a dark horse still, but Shizuma is making it pretty clear that he likes Ryoko, although the feeling isn't mutual yet. (How many times has he asked out out to eat?)

The second "Real Bout High School" is a solid expansion on the first volume, with a good balance of action and solid characters. Adrenaline packed comedy.

    4 out of 5 stars getting better.......2004-08-01

I wasn't sure how I felt about this series after reading the first volume, but in this volume it seems to be getting better. In this volume, Shizuma participates in a K-Fight with a teacher, and Ryoko and Tatsuya are in a play together. This volume gives readers a little more insight into Ryoko, although Tatsuya seems to become more mysterious. I'm still not sure how much more in going on in Shizuma's mind, other than his next fight, but I like him anyway. Daisaku, Ryoko's biggest fan, is around for a bit, being cute and more than a bit stalker-like. I'm still not sure if I would recommend this series, but at least is seems to be getting better. I'm looking forward to the next volume.

5 out of 5 stars Azumi another fighter!!.......2003-10-26

in this vol. they start a k-fight where all the samuri's og to fight, and of course the first is shizuma, he is honestly funny, but thne gets into a fight with a teacher which really lights the fire, and of course a new contestant eneters the fight, she keeps that smile on her face and never takes it off, that is azumi, while her fighting with shizuma she spots ryokos crush and hugs him and thati s what makes ryoko realll y fierce by saying"that gate crashing little harlot" really funny, and that is when her and azumi fight both are quick at speed and movement, but in the end ryoko wins the match and azumi'ds smile is wiped off her face, then we find out later that her crush is leaving and that is what makes ryoko really go down the hill.....

5 out of 5 stars Real Bout rocks!.......2003-03-20

I LOVE Real Bout High School. It's fun, sweet, tough, silly, stupid, and cool all at once. The characters are awesome, and could give Ranma Saotome or even Kenshin a run for their money. Ryoko Mitsurugi is beautiful, arrogant, powerful, an accomplished sword master, and thinks of herself as a modern day samurai. Her rival Azumi Kiribiyashi is gorgeous, conceited, strong, a naginata master, and a devious witch. Together they fight for the affections of the kendo captain, who remains oblivious to their interest, even when it is applied with a sledgehammer (which it usually is).

While all this is going on, Ryoko is stalked by a boy obsessed with her and her adventures. He records every K-fight she has and takes pictures of her to sell to classmates. And Shizuma continues to taunt her and challenge her.

Another wonderful installment in a gem of a series.

    Book Description

In a school where martial arts are standard curriculum, Samurai Girl Ryoko is the top fighter and most popular student around or is she? Things change when the uncouth fighter Shizuma Kusanagi transfers in from Kansai. He may not have the grace of Ryoko, but his amazing fighting abilities could make him the most dominant martial artist at Daimon High. Principal Todo encourages rivalry between the competitors, setting up a dangerous "K-Fighting" tournament where even the teachers can join in and settle once-and-for-all just who is the top dog on campus.

1 out of 5 stars Not Good At All.......2006-05-09

OK, I bought this manga, because I had heard good things generally about it, and was actually looking forward to reading it, but when I got it I hated it from page one. I actually could not even finish it, so I can't actually tell you the story, except for whats on the back, whihc is essentially, its a school where you fight and are graded on it(kinda like Battle Vixens, but without the T & A or bad language). The art work in this series was dark and offended my eyes. The writing was good, but was also against my eyes with the poor art, I hated this and won't read the story, even if it may be a good one.

    3 out of 5 stars High-octane action.......2006-01-02

Were "Ranma 1/2" drained of its fantasy elements, it might resemble "Real Bout High School," a martial-arts high school comic that goes by almost too fast. The first volume introduces us to its hot-headed protagonists, but moves by almost too fast -- it would have been much better if the authors had slowed down enough to really introduce us to Daimon High's inhabitants.

When the "Vipers" attack in the street, Ryoko Mitsurugi thrashes them -- but soon she receives some help from an uncouth, unibrowed boy. At first she gives him no more thought, until Shizuma Kusinagi shows up at the Intracampus Martial-Arts Competition, and wipes the floor with his rivals. Then... he transfers.

Now Ryoko has a new rival, which reinforces her insecurities about her femininity. Then Shizuma introduces the concept of the K-Fight to Daimon High, where students and teachers can settle their differences via combat. And now Ryoko finds herself ensnared in a romantic rivalry, while Shizuma ends up challenging a teacher to fight him.

As an action story, "Real Bout High School" fits the bill -- lots of fighting, in different styles, between all sorts of people -- including a student-teacher brawl brewing at the end. The artwork is solidly drawn, full of detail and slapstick extra.... although with the usual focus on women's barely-covered bodies (with especial emphasis on Ryoko's rather thick legs).

Actually, there is almost too much action. The plot moves at a lightning-fast speed, so you might miss key developments. And some of the characters -- such as perky fighter Azumi and violence-loving principal Mr. Todo -- are only introduced during the fights themselves. It feels very rushed in places, and could have used a few more chapters devoted to characterization.

But if they are not so easily understood, then Ryoko seems to be -- she's tough and dedicated to the samurai ideal, but also insecure about her abilities, her femininity, and her appeal to kendo hottie Tatsuya. And Shizuma is both gritty and funny, whether giving Ryoko a noogie or blasting away twenty opponents.

While the first "Real Bout High School" feels rushed, it has plenty of action and sets up the start of an interesting series. Now that it's started, it has time to flower.

    2 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2005-02-05

Ok, this one of the worst mangas i have read. I really don't liek the characters(except Ryoko's aunt, she's hilrious) in this story, and the story itself is not so great. I put 2 stars because it deserves some credit. I mean, there are some funny parts. Hilrious in fact(Mostly in the second one)And this stroy dose make u care a little what will happen next. It could be worse..... You could not care at all what happens next. One more thing... the art. Gawd do i h8te the art.......................................

    4 out of 5 stars GOOD MANGA.......2004-08-18

Hi (...) I'm as a new fan of manga I've only read about 7 so far but I have already become obsessed with them and intend to read more. I look back on this manga quite fondly as it was the first I ever read it was good lots of action, good plot and halorious storyline as well as indepth characters the only thing holding it back from 5 stars is the fact that it at times was VERY confusing but all and all it was good manga and what started my obsession.

3 out of 5 stars feels like it's just surface level, so far.......2004-08-01

This book takes place at a school were there is more attention paid on how well the students fight than on how well they're learning things in class. There are so many clubs for different fighting styles that they're all fighting for space and money. Ryoko Mitsurugi is one of the best fighters in the school. Shizuma Kusanagi comes and shakes everything up by starting K-Fights, which allow students to resolve issues through battle.

The artwork is nice, although the layout is occasionally confusing, since so much tends to go on in one page. I don't really have a lot of problems with this volume. The reason I'm giving it a three is because I feel like the characters might as well be cardboard cutouts. There aren't even all that many hints that there are depths to them. I'll be reading the rest of this series because I don't think it's bad, but I hope that the other volumes had some depth to the characters personalities.
