Witches, madmen, evil children, and denizens of the macabre.......2003-05-16
Imaginatively written and deftly drawn by Richard Sala, Peculia is a unique and highly recommended black-and-white graphic novel that connects the bizarre adventures of a truly unusual girl from the comic book series "Evil Eye." The plucky young lady confronts witches, madmen, evil children, and other denizens of the macabre in this tongue-in-cheek, distinctively drawn, and succinctly presented collection.

Book Description
Five college students who live many miles apart but who share a terrifying childhood secret each receive a mysterious message: "Dear survivor, please return." It's a request they have been dreading, but knew must one day come. Seven years earlier a dark force of powerful evil had preyed on the seventh-grade class of Seven Oaks middle school. Now someone has summoned the survivors, someone who needs their special help, their knowledge and skills, in order to defeat the evil again. But are they being lured into a trap? Well...duh!!
This tongue-in-cheek horror novel, which manages to both parody and celebrate elements of modern horror is the latest book by Richard Sala, author of such delightfully macabre books as Peculia, The Chuckling Whatsit, Maniac Killer Strikes Again! and the Evil Eye comic book series. Sala has gained a devoted following over the years as a master of a unique brand of quirky horror and dark humor. His work appeared in the critically-acclaimed McSweeney's Vol. 13 collection and has been animated on MTV, and he has collaborated with Lemony Snicket, among others. This book features several characters from his "Peculia" talesstories which revolve around a mysterious waif-like girl, her very strange acquaintances, and her tendency, through no fault of her own, to find herself facing a variety of awful creatures and ghastly goings-on.
For years, Sala has promised his readers a full-length "Peculia" novel that would shed some light on the background of the intrepid young wanderer, and they won't be disappointed. No previous exposure to any of Sala's stories is necessary, however. In fact, anyone who likes a little chuckle with their chills, anyone who enjoys curling up with tales of vampires and other things that go bump in the night, will want to get their claws on this before the next full moon.

Vampires, gypsies & babysitters.......2006-06-30
Don't get too attached to Noelle, Honor and Wren. They are young, cute, affable babysitters. Unfortunately, they have entered Peculia's world, and Peculia's world is one of semi-comic horror.
As the title of this book suggests, there are vampires afoot. Tired, perhaps, of seeking their prey in the wild or in alleys on the seamy side of town, industrious vamp Nicola takes the novel approach of hiring babysitters -- four of them, to be exact -- when she and her family feel peckish. But when only three members of the local babysitters' club show up for duty, they quickly draft the services of Peculia, who just happens to be passing by en route to buy cereal. George, a young boy with a big crush on Noelle, comes along for what promises to be a quiet evening.
Only it's not. Besides Nicola, who chooses one babysitter for herself, there are three more bloodsuckers in the house: Frekerika, a young, sharp-featured girl; Agenetta, a gargoyle-faced baby; and Grandmama, an ancient, billowing crone. And, while the sitters all seem conscientious enough about their jobs, that may not be enough to save them from thirsty fangs. But Peculia is a bit cleverer than the rest, and besides, George is still on the loose. And George might just have met an important, if unkempt, friend in a camp of Germanic gypsies on the outskirts of town earlier that day.
"Peculia & the Groon Grove Vampires" is a sexy black-and-white graphic novel in which the humor is subtle, and the violence is real but not grotesque. The monsters look like monsters, while the babysitters look like the sort of appealing young girls who never fare well in teen slasher movies. Peculia herself is quick and resourceful.
