5 out of 5 stars Osamu Tezuka's classic manga..........2004-05-20

First of all, let me say I love Astro Boy (nee Tetsuwan Atom). The stories are fun, action packed and don't feel "dated" at all considering the material is 30+ years old. If you're looking for a good solid series, a classic manga, or something for your kids you really should give Astro Boy a try...

5 out of 5 stars Mighty Atom!.......2003-12-27

"Astro Boy Vol. 1" is a great introduction to Tezuka Osamu's famous flying boy robot. Included is the origin story of Mighty Atom/Astro Boy, a longer tale which takes up 2/3's of the book, about cyborg dogs called the Hot Dog Corps, and a third tale about living plants. The stories are in no particular chronological order, and are selected more for feel and quality than anything else. Tezuka has included a few self-introductions featuring himself as a cartoon character.

Of good interest also are an introduction to the series, including notes on translation and selection. The translator attempted to preserve the Japanese names as much as possible, including nicknames, keeping only the Americanized Astro Boy instead of the direct translation Mighty Atom, as Astro Boy is the more familiar name.

Astro Boy is a lot like the Mickey Mouse of Japan, and his good-natured adventures are as much fun to read as the early Mickey Mouse comics. The difference comes in social issues, as Tezuka clearly uses his character to tackle ethical/political issues that interested him at the times, raising the comic up several notches.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to a Manga Classic.......2003-01-05

I haven't picked up a comic book in quite a few years, and read the inside cover of one of the later volumes of Astro Boy, which piqued my interest.

Astro Boy Vol. 1 is the background story of how Astro Boy was created. However, when Tezuka-san put together these volumes, he mixed and matched different stories, created in different times, to best tell the story. For example, Tezuka-san created the series in 1951, but the first story in the volume was published in 1975. It also has Tezuka-san, interject some of his own personal insights into the book, so the reader better understands the story.

There are three stories about AstroBoy, who is the epitome of all that is good. The first, describes how Astro was created. The second, called Hot Dog Corps, is a strange story of how an army of robots, created from dogs, are ruled by a Princess who is ardent about keeping anyone from coming to the moon. The underlying story, is that good prevails.

The drawing, which is simple, yet interesting, is no too destracting.

I loved this Manga, and can't wait to read all of them. Like candy, they are little treats, that don't take a very long time to digest or consume.

4 out of 5 stars Astrotiffic.......2002-05-13

Astro Boy Vol.1 is a compelling read. It was written/drawn by Osamu Tezuka (Creator), and translated by Frederik L. Schodt (who is apparetly German!).

There are 3 stories in this book, with the first story taking up the majority of the book. The first story the "Hot Dog Corps" may shock you due to its bizarre storyline. Without giving away too much it has nothing to do with 'hot dogs' the food! Rather its about Mr Mustachio's dog who aparently is hot in some kind of way.

My only criticism is that when astro fights another robot he never goes in for the kill. Perhaps the rumours about his queerness are true, perhaps not. Frankly I dont care. But one day astro's nicenessiness will be his downfall.

you heard it first here!

5 out of 5 stars Over fifty years old, but still wonderful.......2002-04-24

I love old anime and manga. When asked what my favorite manga are I readily say Lone Wolf and Cub, Urusei Yatsura, and the like. Now that I have finished reading Astro Boy, Tetsuwan Atom, it must be added to the list also.

Astro Boy is a simple story of a robot boy with a heart of gold who wants to bring peace to the world. Simple, but very fun to read. Astro Boy is brought to us by Osamu Tezuka the God of Manga. In his wonderful cartoonish style Dr. Tezuka weaves a world where virtually anything can happen. In this book for instance we see a group of cyborgs with dog brains and nervous systems ruled bt a Russian Duchess who wants to keep anyone from going to the moon. Very odd, but fun to read.

Also the supportingcharacters are something else. Dr. Ochanomizu is your typicall caring but lost in the clouds scientist, and there is Mr. Mustachio a great man, with one of my favorite quotes ever. "What do you want with me, anyway? You trying to sell me something, or kill me, or do you just want my autograph?" page 103.

Also interesting is that we get manga commentary by Tezuka. Thty really adds something to the strip. Also this book does not start back with the first strip that was produced back in 1951. Instead it starts with a strip from 1975. The first real story arc is from 1961. Mr. Schodt and the Japanese publishers say that this oreder will make the series easier to understand we will see, but anyway: "Here ta meet ya!"

5 out of 5 stars If robots can think, should they vote for president?.......2004-03-12

"Astro Boy Vol. 2" continues the excellent tales of Tezuka Osamu's seminal creation, the boy robot Astro Boy! (Can't you just hear the theme music!)

This second volume continues Tezuka's familiar themes, exploring the political and emotional impact of robot populations, are they second class citizens or individual beings, do they have souls and emotions? All very common themes in modern Science Fiction, but Tezuka did it first here.

There are 3 stories, the first featuring Astro Boy and a plot to prevent robot voting rights, the second staring a robot magician who's body is stolen yet who's soul remains his own, and a final story of Astro Boy's love for a special plant and the story behind it. All 3 stories are very well crafted, blending entertainment with social commentary seamlessly. A great series for parents looking for comics for their kids.

The only problem with the Dark Horse presentation is the order in which the series are released. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the order, and volume 2 has two new characters appear, Uran and Cobalt, without any explanation or origin.

Q: Do you have a male preteen, who likes Pokemon, Yugioh, cartoons, owns at least two game systems (handhelds count) and knows what anime is?

A: Yes.

Stop here and buy the series. Don't ask why, or is it valuable, beneficial or even engage in the debate about the academic merits of comic books, or graphic novels. I could tell you it is a Japanese classic, on par with Superman, that it may be a collectors item in the future or it is an engaging series with complex subplots for this age group.

That doesn't matter.

You only need to know that if you buy it:

1. He is reading
2. He is reading
3. He is not playing a video game
4. He is reading
5. He is not arguing or fighting with a sibling
6. He is not watching TV like a mindless drone
7. He is reading
8. He will want to read other graphic novels.

5 out of 5 stars Astro Boy's Greatest Battle.......2004-09-16

"Astro Boy (Volume 3)" reprints one of the most popular stories in the Astro Boy saga, that of his struggles against the mighty Pluto, a super-robot designed to duel and destroy Earth's seven most powerful robots. Astro Boy, or course, is number seven on the list.

Pluto has long been depicted as Astro Boy's Arch Enemy, and any action shots of Astro Boy are likely to be seen in battle with this mighty horned robot. One by one, Pluto tackles and destroys the greatest robots from several countries, such as Mont Blanc from France, Hercules from Greece, as well as champions from Australia, Germany and Scotland. In order to challenge Pluto, Astro Boy has his power increased to 1 million horsepower. Will it be enough?

As well as a good story, "Astro Boy (Volume 3)" is a glimpse into Tezuka Osamu's soul. Unable to make Pluto completely evil, he redeems the murderous robot with a sense of honor and responsibility, as well as a desire for the friendship of Astro Boy's sister, Uran. As with all of Tezuka's stories, there is more going on under the surface, as the struggle to build a more and more powerful robot becomes a metaphor for the nuclear arms race of the 1950s Cold War.

Also included in this volume is a short story, "Mad Machine," where an evil scientist creates a device that makes all machines, from clocks to Astro Boy, go berserk. He uses the machine to extort 2 billion yen from the robots of the world. Of course, such a scheme could never work with Astro Boy around!

5 out of 5 stars The love of money is the root of all evil.......2004-11-08

Once again, Tezuka Osamu serves up a hefty moral lesson, this time on slavery and greed, and how the lust for material gain can twist human beings into something ugly. Each of the four stories is entertaining, and surprisingly deep considering the simple style of art.

In the first story, Astro Boy seeks the mysteries of Robot Land, a fantasy robot theme park where robots act as characters from history and adventure. If it sounds familiar, Tezuka's story came out 10 years before Yul Brynner's similarly themed film "Westworld." However, the robots do not turn bad, but are rather being kept as slaves by the greedy Dr. Haido, who uses Robotland as a cover for his illegal gun smuggling operation.

The next tale, "Ivan the Fool," sees Astro Boy and some others on a trip to the moon. When they discover a valley of diamonds, and an ancient Soviet robot Ivan, the greed of one man and the incapability of someone who follows orders threatens to destroy the whole group.

The short story "A Day to Remember," a special day in future Japan where robot versions of dead family members come back to visit for a single day, in the tradition of the Japanese Obon festival. A time machine and a dead little boy who looks just like Astro Boy lead on to adventure.

Finally, in "Ghost Manufacturing Machine" a Hitler-like villain uses a machine to create an eternal ghost of himself that can live forever and inflict his evil on the world. Astro Boy and local hero-robot Platinum must fight against this unstoppable foe.

As with all the volumes in the Dark Horse Astro Boy series, the individual stories are not collected in any particular order, but do contain a brief introduction from Tezuka himself explaining his story, and what he thinks of it.

Fifty years after his creation, Astro Boy continues to lead the manga and anime charge, his adventures still as fresh and exciting as when first crafted by master storyteller/cartoonist/animator Osamu Tezuka. Perhaps the most endearing, and enduring, creation to emerge from Tezuka's volcanic imagination, Astro Boy is packed with action, laughs, and genuine emotion, interlacing fantastic situations and creatures with timeless themes and wry observances of technology, war, and the human condition. 4 out of 5 stars Text replaces pictures.......2004-11-05

Well, for me this volume was a disappointment. In many places story is told using long text inserts instead of pictures, which is quite boring, in my opinion. The only exception was the story about H-bomb. However, you will need this volume, if you like 5 preceding volumes, because it is a part of "Once upon a time" cycle and because in later 7,8 volumes the text insertion is abandoned.

4 out of 5 stars Truly humorous, while being tragic........2003-06-20

Tezuka Osamu shows Atom (Astroboy) in an alternate origin. Here, much more detail is given than in volume #1, and sub plots abound. Atom finds himself thrown through a time warp, and in mid twentieth century Japan, a time before the rise of robots. His dilemma is that he cannot be refueled by the then current technology. Adventures abound, both tragic and comic. One really funny gag is where he must hide the fact that he is a robot from a person who sees him fly out of the sky and land in a city park. This gag, alone justified the purchase price. Atom's solution to this problem made me laugh myself red in the face. Tezuka Osamu shows his talent for addressing serious cultural issues while keeping a light touch. The robot vs. human rights issue mirrors the black vs. white conflict that was prevalent during the early 1960s when Tezuka wrote this story. Although he lived in Japan, one can ascertain that there was class trouble there too, or perhaps he was aware of the trouble in other nations.

This volume introduces Scara, an insect-person from a distant planet. She is clueless about proper behavior in the world of humans, but in succeeding volumes, she becomes more of an advisor to Atom, than he is to her.

NOTE: The story begun in this volume spans the next two volumes. If you love Atom, you will want those too.

5 out of 5 stars Science and Society.......2005-01-31

"Astro Boy Volume 5" continues Dark Horses excellent collection of Tezuka Osamu's, Japan's "God of Manga," seminal series. Each volume has Tezuka's trademark blend of serious adult issues and child-friendly storytelling. Almost like "A Child's Guide to Racism, Politics, and Other Bad Things" each Astro Boy story contains a moral on political ambition, greed and prejudiceness.

Volume 5 has three story arcs; "Crucifix Island" is the tale of the bitter and unfriendly Pook, a transforming robot left unfinished by his "father," a criminal named Dr. Tozawa. Tozawa bands together with some other criminals to storm Crucifix Island, a rich treasure depot of gems and uranium, using Pook as their main weapon. However, his love for his "child" leads to Tozawa's undoing. "Space Snow Leopard" is a science lesson on colony creatures, like ocean coral and sponges, as Astro Boy battles the mysterious Space Snow Leopard. "The Artificial Sun" talks of prejudice, as robot-hater and world famous detective Sherlock Holmspun teams up with Astro Boy against gangster Kim Sankaku and a stolen artificial sun. In order to defeat Sankaku, Astro Boy must overcome Holmspun's attitudes about robots, as well as his dark secret.

While very cartoony in nature, and definitely aimed at a young audience, the "Astro Boy" series can be enjoyed by a wide spectrum of ages, as Tezuka's stories are universal in themes. However, if you have a child of young reading age, Astro Boy would make a great gift.
