5 out of 5 stars Great summer read.......2007-05-11

This is a great, easy, summer read. The characters are fun, quirky and surprisingly easy to relate to.

4 out of 5 stars A Pathchwork Planet.......2004-05-03

This was the first book of A. Tyler's that I read. I thought the most beautifully written. Somehow the title suits the book and a beautifully crafted work. The characters are human, a bit sad and you find yourself cheering them on. This book enticed me to read her others. I also liked Ladder of Years, but not as much. Breathing Lessons for which she won the Pulitzer I felt was not as good as her later works.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing bargain.......2002-03-21

This volume is a collection of three novels by Anne Tyler: "A Patchwork Planet" of 1998, "Ladder of Years" of 1995, and "Saint Maybe" of 1991. Hardbound and durable, this volume is a better option for a reader who has started reading Anne Tyler, and even for the reader who already owns one or two paperbacks with novels contained in this volume. This volume is simply beautiful. Pleasant serif typeface, good, bright paper, nice cover artwork, and finally, amazingly low cost. You get three hardbound novels for a price of one paperback. In addition, all three novels of Anne Tyler belong to the more interesting subset of her literary heritage, so there is really nothing to be suspicious about here. Psst, do not tell anyone I have said that, but such bargains are possible only in North America. Nowhere else I would be able to get hold of three interesting novels combined in one hardbound volume for almost nothing. Do not hesitate, dear reader, and rush to purchase this collection. Now!

5 out of 5 stars Shoujo Manga with a plot!.......2003-07-16

Planet Ladder is my all-time favorite manga, and I don't say this lightly. The art is beautiful, and the plot is refreshingly complex. Sure, those summaries on the back may make Planet Ladder look simple, or even dopey, but once you start reading it's another story. All the characters are complicated and unique.

Simply put, if you want a beautiful shoujo manga with some real substance, try Planet Ladder. Two thumbs up!

    5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2003-03-25

Wow! I think this book definately shows character, and the art is absolutely gorgeous. Hopefully more of the series will be coming out!

5 out of 5 stars Best so far of this series.......2003-03-23

Idou fills in Bambi & Meshie fills in Kaguya, finally giving us a large amount of the story. We finally find out Kagami's connection to Kaguya & Seeu & their connection to the whole end of the universe thing. Bambi meets her sister, takes up Living Weapon Pyro, & embarks on her first campaign destroying a collapser for Emperor Kura in 7 minutes. Quite a bit happens in this Volume--we discover Bambi isn't quite human as we learn more about her father & Kaguya appears to all the worlds with the help of Gaviela, sage forbidden of Meteor, to announce her plans to save not a world, but someone who will help save the most people of all the worlds.
The 4 pg mini-comic at the end of a day in the life of Mad Prince Seeu is cute.
This is not a magical girl series like Rayearth. More sci-fi/fantasy than swords & sorcery since everything appears more science-based except the sages & their powers(which could be explained as psychic later) & the Living Weapons(which also could wind up having a tech rather than magical origin.) There are some very good-looking characters in this series--my fav is Mad Prince Seeu with straight red hair down to about his knees, owner of scythe-like Living Weapon Lunato Mercury.

2 out of 5 stars Ok here are the facts...........2006-03-08

You love sci fiction you will love this book. If you are into seemingly pointless plots more power to you. Great art but the plot has little interest and half the time you are confused out of your mind about what is going on. I thought it was going to be a good read but read the first couple of chapters before you add this book to you collection. Save yourself 10 bucks

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful and Deep Manga.......2005-05-06

I really enjoyed "Planet Ladder". The main character, Kaguya, feels like she's not very important, that she doesn't really help anyone. She has trouble saying no to people, something that I can really relate to.

But one day, she is kidnapped by "aliens" and finds out that the Earth is only one of nine parallel universes. Kaguya has to learn how to fend for herself and learn to make her own decisions instead of just relying on others to make them for her.

The plot can be a bit confusing, but I thought it made it more mysterious. It's one of those things that you feel like you don't understand even when you do.

The art is really pretty too, and the plot gets better with every volume. I highly suggest this manga to girls, manga fans, or anyone interested in the sci-fi genre. I think that you will enjoy it as much as I did.

2 out of 5 stars Admire the Cover Art but Leave Planet Ladder on the Shelf.......2004-06-18

Planet Ladder has such lovely cover art, but unfortunately the art and story inside is rather bland and generic. The main character, Kaguya, looks very pretty on the cover but in the actual story she insists on wearing these hideous pigtails. Dispite what someone else said, Kaguya is a manga stereotype and one of my least favorites at that- the passive girl with no self esteem whose always apoligizing for being worthless. Kaguya was found abandoned as a child and she has a knack for reading tarot cards, but when she tries to saw her own future she always gets a blank card.
One day some strange foriegn men come to her house and start fighting over her. During the struggle, Kaguya is transported to another world (her home planet most likely) and ends up having to fend for herself with the help of a robot who looks like a boy she's been seeing in her nightmares for years. This is the same old plot were Jill Normal is transported to a fantasy world only to find out she's the most important person there and two or more factions want her loyalties.
An unoriginal plotline is okay with me if the execution is well-handled, but Planet Ladder has one of the most confusing back-stories I've ever muddled through. Looks like there was a war or something and some prince guy went insane, but I'm not really sure. There are some notes in the back of the book but they actually made me more confused!
Planet Ladder looks like it still could be a good story as it has some kernels of good ideas, it just really needs to pull itself together. However, this volume was so scatterbrained that I'm not inclined to pick up the next installment in the series.

    5 out of 5 stars a must-have for manga fans.......2003-11-23

Planet Ladder starts off very confusing, so I reccomend buying at least volume two along with volume one. This is not something you can just blow through, you really need to pay attention so as you read farther in the series you can understand it more clearly. It slowly reveals more and more of the main characters importance and of her unknown past.

Yuri Narushima does an excellent job on the artwork, it's amazing! The detail is incredible along with her ability to make the story confusing and strange but it still makes you want to read more and more.

The origanal right-to-left format makes it even better. For those who haven't read manga that way, don't worry it doesn't take long to get used to ^_~.

    5 out of 5 stars Great sci-fi manga.......2003-10-05

Great graphics, tight story, likeable, well-rounded characters... I read an average of 15 mangas a week (I rent them for a few cents) so I've read thousands of mangas up until now. This is one of the few mangas that stands out in my memory. It's a story about Kaguya, a Japanese high school girl who's more than what she seems to be. The general concept for the story, parallel universes (sort of, not really) is an over-used method in science fiction, but Narushima Yuri brings an entirely new vision of it mostly with her skill at characterizing.

By shoujo-manga standards, this manga series is a tiny little bit dark, but no where close to Evangelion and its like. You won't think it's very dark unless you're totally into sappy tween manga.

I won't spoil anything for you, but let me say that one male character is very interesting and will draw out your sympathy without being a weakling. You'll find yourself drawn into Kaguya's interest for him, I'm sure. Yes, there's some love going on in the series... But it's handled well and delicately. I didn't like Fushigi Yuugi and other mangas like it because of the way every male around the main character kept falling all over her, but this manga doesn't have that kind of incredulous sappyness.

There's quite a lot to like and not much to complain about. Oh, one thing, I guess... The volumes come out to slow. :( I want to get more of Planet Ladder! :) But other than that, no major complaints. Interesting, unusual characters and well-thought story.

Like stories about girls being taken to strange worlds? If so you need to read this manga. Yes. NEED. This is quite possibly the BEST in the genre. The story is so different and interesting and DEEP. The characters are great, the story is great, even the art (though dated) is really good! Seeu has to be the most original character I've ever seen in manga! Go read it! Right now!

    4 out of 5 stars Planet Ladder.......2004-05-23

well, as far as comics, this is definitely one of the most confusing ones I've ever read. The art is beautiful, the characters are good, but the plot is just too complicated to follow. In this volume, I'm starting to see a bit more of what's going on. It's pretty good, mostly about the Prince guy Seu or something and kaguya. You learn a few more things too, and I'll have to say this is the best one in the series. Can't wait for vol 7!

5 out of 5 stars A great third volume in a surprisingly entertaining series........2002-10-14

The first two volumes of "Planet Ladder" have been a pleasant surprise. With an intriguing story pushed along by some very well-conceived characters, this manga is a wonderful delight for anyone who has decided to try this relatively unknown series in TOKYOPOP's new "100% Authentic Manga" line. Can the third volume of "Planet Ladder" keep us entertained and live up to the first two volumes? Thankfully, yes.

Kaguya, the high school girl who has been transported to another world, now knows her destiny and the terrible choice she has to end up making. Now on the run with a woman she for some reason greatly admires and a living doll who obeys her every command, Kaguya eventually runs into, of all things, a giant talking chicken with a bizarre yet sad story and a surprising secret.

The main story of "Planet Ladder" somewhat takes a backseat in this third volume to make room for the story told by the giant talking chicken. This can be seen as dragging things out, but the way the story is told begs to differ. The story fits perfectly into the overall arc of "Planet Ladder", and there are even subtle hints that bits and pieces of the story will factor into the series in later volumes. And near the end the main story does get back on track, ending with a subtle yet effective cliffhanger that'll leave readers waiting agitatedly for volume four.

With the story set to move forward and spring all sorts of surprises, I can't recommend "Planet Ladder" enough. Fantasy fans will love the story's delicate and dark tone, and by the looks of things romance fans will soon get their fill later in the series. And thanks to TOKYOPOP, the manga can be read in its original right-to-left format, making it a very worthwhile buy indeed.

    5 out of 5 stars Story's picking up.......2003-03-23

Captured finally the 4th World Telene's ruler, our heroes bluff. Bambi acts as mouthpiece for/under the spell of The Princess of Choosing as all gawk at the strange entourage of silver-haired beauty, expressionless princess & doll, & giant rooster(keeping his beak shut). 7th world Geo's Emperor Kura awaits his prize, but doesn't trust Telene to deliver, sending Deimion to pick up Kaguya, but at the last minute Telene's ruler tries to keep Bambi as his own, forcing Kaguya to activate Gold's attack to free her. We get a first show of Kura's Living [Tool] Nox Light thru Nox Knight Deimion to subdue Kaguya's display of Gold's power which also reveals Bambi as a survivor of the destroyed 9th world & heir of Ragunahaan who possessed another Living [Tool]. Gold snags Kaguya & escapes with his creator Seeu while Bambi & Waseda are delivered to Geo. More secrets are revealed as Meshie Laracott, Sage of the Comet Taboo shows up in Seeu's palace after the Mad Prince passes out(from too much emotional stimulus--untouched by human hands as he was reared by dolls so he shuts down when he can't cope with Kaguya's claim Gold spoke to her as Kagami & she's also met Waseda). The 2 pg mini-comic at the end about teen girls(Kaguya) & their weight is cute.
This story takes awhile to get going, but it is an excellent read, although a bit confusing. Just as one fits pieces together, the next volume rearranges the view. This is not magical girl like Rayearth, but more chosen one since there isn't so much magic as powers & science in this book--Living Weapons with incredible powers, youthful mages possessing distinct powers to each one(such as Meshie who remembers each of his lives as he is reincarnated & has survived the end of the universe many times, but has failed to alter fate as Kagami did sacrificing himself to save Seeu & Kaguya) "collapsers" which between the worlds/dimensions, & living dolls/robots.

4 out of 5 stars One of the more difficult series to understand.......2003-04-15

Planet Ladder is one of those manga that are not for everyone. Not because it has nudity (it has some) or gore (none shown, but implied), but because it is so hard to understand. The plot moves at a fast pace, characters are introduced and then leave, and the action is minimal. But for those of you willing to tough it out, then it is well worth it. Truly one of the more intellectually stimulating manga series out there.

5 out of 5 stars A marvelous continuation of a potentially stellar series........2002-07-15

"Planet Ladder" will probably never rise above being an underground classic. While it definately has its charm, it isn't well known enough to make itself known among other TOKYOPOP titles such as "Love Hina", "Cowboy Bebop", and "Cardcaptor Sakura". Which is a pity, because while the first volume demonstrated a lot of potential, volume two develops that potential into a wonderful story.

The beauty of "Planet Ladder" can be seen in the front cover, which is a beautiful yet haunting picture of the main character, Kaguya. The wonderful artwork remains throughout the rest of the graphic novel, some of which is enough to rival CLAMP.

With the stunny artwork comes a marvelously constructed story that goes much deeper than the first volume. Kaguya, trapped within another "world," must find out who she is and what her destiny is, and what she discovers is nothing short of one of the worst burdens someone could ever hope to never carry. While the story in the second volume probably doesn't move along as much as the first one, the story is still good enough to give the reader something to look forward to when volume three is published.

As stated before, the artork in "Planet Ladder" is enough to rival CLAMP's style in many ways. And thanks to the "100% Authentic Manga" line, the novel is published in its original right-to-left format. Because of this, the artwork isn't left distorted by photo-reversing effects and remains crisp and clear for US readers to enjoy.

As for the translation, TOKYOPOP's infamous reputation as a mediocore translator is being left in the dust. The dialogue sounds natural and realistic, not stiff and flat like in series such as "Cardcaptor Sakura" To top it off, TOKYOPOP also left the original sound effects in the novel translated. However, with this second volume, TOKYOPOP experimentally put in miniature translations within the untranslated kana sound effects. This experiment actually succeeds, as it leaves the original effects in and translates them without ruining them.

All in all, the second volume of "Planet Ladder" is a worthy continuation of the wonderful first volume. While the series will most likely never reach the status of series like "Inu-Yasha" and "Cardcaptor Sakura", anyone lucky enough to come across this series will be glad they picked it up.
