Book Description
Leaping straight out of their hit new Cartoon Network show, the Worlds Greatest Heroes have hit the stands in the sizzling-hot series JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED. This inaugural manga-sized collection features these turbocharged tales: Divide Conquer, Poker Face, Small Time, Local Hero and Monitor Duty.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent stories, great fun for all........2005-07-14
This 102-page, 7" x 5" mini-sized volume is a fantastic addition to any comic book collection, and fun entertainment for kids and adults alike. It contains five complete short stories inspired on the Cartoon Network's animated "Justice League Unlimited" (JLU) series. Matching the writing and artistic style of the show, the stories are filled with action-packed plots, clear and precise dialogues, detailed drawings, vivid colors, and tons of good humor, and each one showcases more than a handful of superheroes and villains, all straight out of the recently expanded lineup of characters on the series.
The stories included, which were originally published individually as monthly issues of the JLU magazine, are the following:
*JLU #1: Divide & Conquer - When Superman, Wonder Woman and Captain Atom suddenly go berserk and are unable to recall their actions later on, they decide to quit the League and go into hiding before they end up hurting someone. It's up to Batman, Zatanna, Hawkgirl and Flash to discover what or who is behind their strange behavior.
*JLU #2: Poker Face - Superman, Flash, Huntress, Steel and Booster Gold's Poker Night in the League's Watchtower gets interrupted when they receive a report that the Royal Flush Gang is breaking havoc in Las Vegas, and it's up to them to protect the city that's so famous for its casinos, Elvis sightings and Marilyn Monroe impersonators.
*JLU #3: Small Time - When Atom mysteriously materializes on top of the Watchtower's meeting room table, looking seriously ill and battered, is up to him, Wonder Woman, Ice and Firestorm to fight off the new threat of microscopic invaders from another dimension that he has just discovered.
*JLU #4: Local Hero - Batman, Superman, Martian Manhunter and Elongated Man are celebrating on the Planet Rann after helping Adam Strange put away the evil conqueror Kanjar Ro. But Salaan, a young Rannian, doesn't believe that the planet needs an alien as its guardian, so he steals an old Adam Strange costume and frees Kanjar Ro to make his point by proving that he alone can recapture him. When the villain proves too much for Salaan, it's up to the local hero and the members of the League to capture him before he makes Salaan pay for his foolishness with his life.
*JLU #5: Monitor Duty - Blue Beetle seems bored out of his mind while on monitor duty at the Watchtower almost five hours before his shift ends and Green Lantern's begins. After trying some snacks, some costume swapping, some ego surfing on the net, and some casual chatting with other JLU members, a strange noise draws his attention to an intruder. The General, who had to be taken on by the whole JLU team the last time he was captured, was left in deep space as punishment for his deeds, but has just come back seeking revenge. It's up to Blue Beetle to stop this seemingly invincible menace on his own or perish in the effort.
Although this title is advertised as a graphic novel for kids, it's an enjoyable read for everyone who likes comics and the characters of the DC universe, particularly if they are also fans of the show. It's also a healthy tool, free of the needless violence and gruesomeness so familiar to comic books today, with which to set an example for kids on the real meaning of friendship, teamwork, conviction, trust, sacrifice and other values and ideals embodied by the League's superheroes.
Whether you buy this delightful little title for yourself or for your kids, you won't be disappointed.

Pretty Dam Good.......2007-01-31
This is the first Justice League title I've decided to buy and wasn't disappointed. Being a Marvel fan myself, I was a little skeptic about the abilities of DC and most of thier characters. Batman is the only decent character in my opionion but now that I've read this book my views have changed and I've found a new respect for Batman and the League. The book was well written and is good for anybody (such as myself) not familiar with the DC Universe because it gives a bit of background on anybody who is important and also breathes some life into the famous ones such as Batman and Superman. I highly recommend this book for anybody looking to get into DC.
Batman saves the League.......2006-10-17
For those of who have read my other reviews on Batman novels, you should know I'm a huge Batman fan. So when I heard about a new series that involved The Justice League of America, I was interested. Then I found that the first book in the series would involve Batman as the main charcter in a worldwide crisis. This was the first novel I've ever read that involved Batman.
This is a must-own for JLA fans or Batman fans.
PARTY ON,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Justice League for Adults.......2006-05-02
I really love this series of books, I enjoy the development of the characters. If you are picking this book up for a long in depth intellectual read, then move on.
The plot is simple, the Justice League, with Batman spotlighted in this one, has to deal with a ages old shaman bent on cleansing the world of its evil ways and placing himself as the ruler. The big guns, Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern get taken down early and with the Martian Manhunter off the planet, it leaves Batman to deal with things when his greatest weapon, fear, is used against him.
I really enjoyed the book, but I am just a big kid at heart looking for a mindless foray into the world of superheroes.
JLA vs. ancient evil shaman.......2006-01-09
"The Stone King, A Justice League of America novel: Batman", begins with the strange appearence of a pyramid after the Gotham City Dam bursts and the lake is drained. A university archaeology team is begins studying it when one of the kids becomes possesed by the vengful spirit of a stone age sorcerer. Most of the JLA members are knocked out of commision, except for Batman and The Martian Manhunter, and the two must try to The Stone King before he brings about the end of the world on Halloween night.
While the book is fast paced and exciting, it still lacks a quality that makes comic book novels really rousing. Maybe it is the lack of depth in Bruce Wayne/Batman, I don't know. All I know is that all the JLA books are missing a human element that makes you care about the hero being featured (Superman's book "The Never Ending Battle" being the exception). While it is a good story, it may have been better off being a comic book.
Still there are good scenes in it, the best being where Batman goes to Arkam Asylam to visit The Scarecrow and ask advice. The inclusion of psycic Cassandra was also a nice touch. All in all, if I could, I'd give the book 2 1/2 stars if I could.
A fast-paced and entertaining if not entirely original JLA yarn.......2005-12-29
"The Stone King" is a Justice League of America adventure of a different sort. Firstly its main focus for the majority of the novel is on the JLA's most intriguing member, the Batman. Secondly, the foe that the league faces this time is neither a demented supervillain nor a superhuman mutant or alien, the enemy is an omnipotent prehistoric Shaman! Which is the main drawback of this novel as although the villain comes off as frightening and formidable, it is very jarring to see the Batman, the most sophisticated and plausible of superheroes battling such an otherworldly enemy in such a manner (although it is not the first time that Batman has battled supernatural elements). Also the writer, Alan Grant, tends to ocassionally lean towards the Holywood blockbuster cliches in terms of set-pieces and plot developments and the climax is especially guilty of feeling like a sensless uber-finale to a multi-million dollar action film. But it's not all bad, far from it in fact. What the novel has in its favor is the writer's lean and fast-rolling style of writing that makes the book an addictive and compelling read, even when nothing is happening (which is something that rarerly occurs in this action-packed book), while his sense of detail and psychological insight into the members of the league especially Batman, is nothing short of captivating. Also the writer succeeds in bulding a strong sense of mounting suspense and doom that pays off in the end despite the previously mentioned cliched if entertaining climax. In the end, this is an interesting read for Batman fans ( as well as JLA fans) which offers an extremely fast-paced and entertaining adventure of a dark nature, which combined with the writer's style (which is admirably somewhere between a comic book and a pulp novel) make this a pleasurable read.

JUSTICE LEAGUE of AMERICA
When a mass outbreak of super-powered individuals threatens the world, the JLA determines that latent metahuman abilities are being triggered by an alien contagion, one that's spreading throughout Earth as it transforms its hosts into monstrous engines of destruction. Racing to contain the infection, the world's greatest super heroes link the parasitic plague to an alien invasion from the team's earliest days and make a horrifying discovery: the JLA itself is responsible for the imminent disaster they now face.
Customer Reviews:
Good escapist fun, but nothing spectacular about this book.......2007-05-14
This book is actually decently well written (probably owing in part to the fact that Christopher Golden is actually a legitimate author in his own right rather than a comic book writer who is trying his hand on a novel). The plot is a bit ridiculous, but what do you expect from a book like this?
The story takes a couple twists along the way, but the basic premise is that 10 years ago there was a mysterious rainfall in the U.K. which caused several people to first develop super powers, and later mutate into giant monsters.
Since American comic books tend to be rather American centric, it is a nice change of pace to have a bunch of British characters popping up in the story. (When you think about it, it is kind of strange that in the world of comics almost all the beings with super powers tend to be located in the U.S of A.) Although it would be interesting to run this book by a British friend to see what they think of it. At times I wondered if the colloquial Britishisms used in this book weren't a bit forced. The literary equivalent of Hollywood's bad fake accents perhaps.
("Look mate, give it up already. You tried the bloody shotgun, you silly git. You think a blade's gonna do any more damage than that?"
Graff spat, and then laughed, more than a little lunacy in his voice. "Which one are you? Where's your costume?"
Bryan shrugged. "Don't need one. Not a soddin' superhero, am I?")
The character of Ian Partington, ordinary Brit who develops super powers, and then quickly becomes best friends with everyone in the Justice League, makes me wonder if this book would be classified under what the fans call a "Mary-Sue" story. But it never quite reaches the level of obnoxious.
For the most part this book focuses on the main Justice League characters. (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Flash). In the 3rd act some of the lesser known superheros of the DC Universe make a brief appearance (the Justice Society, the Justice league Reserves, the Titans) but 90% of this book is just the standard JLA.
I enjoy these comic book novels as a light guilty pleasure, but I think if they are going to succeed as an industry, DC is going to have to cater more to the hard core fan base, and publish books about the more minor characters in the DC universe, or explore themes that haven't been done to death a million times before. To be fair I think they have been moving more in that direction recently. (This book is already a couple years old.) But too many parts of this book was based on comic book cliches for my taste. I mean, how often do we have to be told that Batman is a moody guy who slips in and out of shadows, or that Wonder Woman is a dazzling amazon beauty?
Pure Narrative JLA.......2005-10-17
Ever wondered what the JLA would be like without the art? This book gives you the chance to experience it. Mr. Golden does a very laudable job of rendering these icons in prose and conveying their actions blow by blow to the reader.
The work touches upon many different characters throughout the DCU and gives you some truly interesting and enjoyable insights into the minds of many of the JLA's core members. I can honestly say that it enriched my concept and understanding of the JLA and it's members.
Christopher Golden is "Golden".......2005-08-09
I really enjoyed this novel. It has an imaginative storyline, and it is very well-written. I've read many JLA and other superhero novels and have to say this is one of my favs. Christopher Golden put to work not only the core members of the league but many reserve members(and even the JSA and the Teen Titans) as well which added a lot of substance to the story. The characterization is on target. Even if just a small part of the story, I especially liked the inclusion of everyday "normalcy" with Clark and Lois and Wally and Linda.
Mature Ensemble Piece.......2005-07-22
The 4th book in the JLA series is the first that focuses on the core members as a group rather than highlighting one member. As well we see the extended JLA family and other DC heroes called in when things get to be too much for the core five members to handle on their own.
The effective use of the ensemble cast alone makes it a good work. Enhancing it further is the maturity of the themes. We get some looks differing philosophies of the JLA members in regards to acceptable treatment of villains. We get to see the JLA work under duress, not finding an optimal solution, not liking that the solution is not optimal but doing what needs to be done at the time.
At the end of the day the world is saved, but it is not joyous. The League wonders about their methods and second guesses themselves seriously. This fact and the character interactions of the heroes and the newly blossoming meta-humans make this work more mature and better than the previous novels in the series.
Not necessarily a fun read, but it is a good one with things to think about.
A great story if a little hard to believe.......2005-03-11
A well written book that uses great flashbacks and ties everything in nicely with all different characters and past vs. present. Like most of the books in this series, it has a terribly abrupt ending that is just left to say..ok..this happened and thats why. There is no action in the last chapter, just mention of it..sorry I doubt I ruined the book for you. Aside from the ending, I enjoyed the book and it was a pretty fast/easy read.

An oddly mixed bag.......2007-02-13
1. O'Neil should know this character, and the DCU, a lot better than he seems to. Instead, he intentionally veers wildly off from DCU continuity -- not little fanboy stickling, but major pieces of the character and the world vary significantly from the "canon." Why?
2. The best part of the book, as noted elsewhere, is the beginning, where Kyle is learning how to actually use the ring.
3. The weakest part (aside from #1) is the endless Cosmic Stuff -- which, as also noted, takes up much of the book and works far less well in print than it might have with pictures. Or maybe not.
4. Kyle's characterization is solid and entertaining. Everyone else (in the JLA, the Oans, Hal Jordan, etc.) are cardboard cut-outs.
Not a bad book. Just, disappointingly, not a good one.
An OK read till the middle..........2006-06-13
It starts out very well by going into the action and it is well written until you get to the center of the novel. At that time I felt that I needed a college degree to get thru the rest of it. The book goes into a metaphysical, scientifical, and all other ifical reasons and explanations for the origin of heroes.
Not what I thought when I saw it. i read one other Justice League novel and it was almost the same way. This has turned me off to this type of novel.
Use your money to go and get a comic book, it is better in my opinion.

Suprisingly Enjoyed this..........2006-03-21
I knew coming into this book that the origin of Kyle Rayner was not going to be the exact same one that we saw in the comic books. I normally don't like it when characters origins are messed with, but I decided to give this book a try anyways. I actually really enjoyed this book and thought that it was one of the best stories out of the JLA series thus far. The story flowed very well and it held my interest so that I couldn't barely put it down. Sure it wasn't the perfect representation of the Green Lantern Corps but it was a great read. I do recommend this book.
JLA books are the best!! (NOT a graphic novel).......2005-11-11
This was a really cool book! Im a huge comic book fan and I have almost everyone made. I still lack a few however and they are pretty hard to find. The best books that i have read have been the JLA series. I highly recommend them to any comic book fan. This book has a little bit of all the green lanterns. Hal Jordan is the Spectre, Kyle Rayner is the main character, Alan Scott, the original green lantern is Kyle's girlfriend's father. I am not going to tell you the plot other than it involves Sinestro. It is a very good book. Can't wait for the next one. By the way the other JLA books are Batman: Stone King, Superman: Neverending Battle, Wonder Woman: Mythos, JLA: Exterminators, Flash: Stop Motion . All are very very good!!
Physics, Existentialism and Meta-Physics?.......2005-07-23
2.5 stars
To me, Hal Jordan will always be Green Lantern. However I found the beginning of this work fairly strong. Kyle is endearing as a slacker and a loser who ends up with the ring. He's presented pretty well in having difficulties dealing with the ring and the rest of the JLA. It is a bit off-putting though to return to the alleged origin and see his best friend the Flash sneering at him for being irresponsible.
After we get rid of the rest of the JLA by magic, which is the one major suspension of disbelief the reader must get over in every one of these solo JLA novels, Kyle must rise to the occasion.
He does of course, but the story veers crazily at this point into a melange of hard-sf physics, meta-physics and existentialism. Rather than doing much of anything, Kyle engages in lengthy socratic dialogues with his Oan mentor and philosophizes on reality, immortality, the rights and responsibilities of power and on change. Now many of these things should be included in a superhero novel to elevate it above mere action but here it is overdone and done poorly.
The ending is also inadequate and very unbelievable. Other nonsense includes the idea that Oans created superheroes 10 years ago. Ok, sure, there are many different realities in the DC metaverse, but this is a series and the series must remain consistent. In this case we already have 3 generations of Flashes so this 10 years is nonsense.
Even as a standalone book, taken apart from the rest of the series the liberties taken with "known history" would be jarring and less than acceptable.
What I always loved about Green Lantern was the power of the ring that needed to be used with such creativity. Sadly we get little of that here as O'Neil one of the premier GL writers turns it into a hard-sf universe building novel mixed in with meta-physics, and existential philosophy.
To sum it up, the origin story and the hilarious satire of the action-adventure genre at the start was good. The last half was badly wanting.

Wonder Woman vs. brainwashed men.......2005-12-31
In this installment of the Justice League of America novels, the focus is on Wonder Woman, or Princess of the Amazon Diana, who is investigates the disapperence of a diver near her island home of Themyscira (an island populated by women who worship the Olympian Gods). She finally finds Henry, but also finds a lost island that is a male mirror of Themscira, where thousands of men worship Ares, the Greek god of war. She figures out that an orb from space is actually behind a plot to enslave the world, especially the women.
This seems like a novel only a woman can write. I know I sound misogynic, but look at the theme here. The idea of the whole book is that this malevolent orb can more easily change men into violent chauvinist, though stupid and completly void of self motivation. Even the powerful god Ares was not immune. And women (especially Wonder Woamn and Ana, Henry's wife) are the only ones who can counter act the effects with talking of love and compassion, with a lot of hippy 'flower power' talk. The idea is kind of valid, but to make men so easily suspetable to the evil is kind of insulting.
The other problem I had with this book is the lack of charactorization of Wonder Woman. I found her to be cold and distant, even if she was always huging and kissing the other team members. I really wanted to know what made her tick, but never really got to know.
The saving grace of the book was it's action. Toward the end there wer exiting nonstop fights and chases. Also the inclusion of Batman's Oracle was a nice touch.
Good, but not as well rounded as I had hoped.
Bad fan fiction.......2005-12-22
There's a term that I can't remember because I don't really follow it for a subset of bad Star Trek fan-fiction where the author adds a character we've never seen before who is obviously a thinly veiled, idealized version of the author herself who ends up saving the Enterprise, the galaxy and reality and winning the hearts of Kirk and Spock.
Do I need to explain more? (If so, I'll give you a hint. The woman in this book who saves the lives of those helpless weaklings Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, Green Lantern and the Flash is a diver who lives in LA with her husband and the author's bio says she lives in LA with her husband and dive buddy.)
As others have pointed out, the previously existing JLA members are wildly out of character and incompetent. The "villain" of the piece, a red orb that makes people fight, (speaking of Star Trek...) is a bland cliche and the dialogue, especially the "funny" lines delivered by the author's wish fulfillment analogue and her "All You Need is Love" sections are embarassing and wince-inducing.
Comic book fans are completists so they'll need to buy this but don't add insult to injury by reading this godawful tripe.
Good use of characters.......2005-06-17
3.5 stars
Though still not a stellar work, this follow up to the poor Batman:The Stone King manages to be a fairly adept piece of escapist reading with the tension handled well to keep the reader's interest.
Primarily focusing on Wonder Woman, we do get to see more of the rest of the JLA than in the Stone King. When they are out of the action to allow Wonder Woman to take center stage it is handled relatively well and isn't too unbelievable. The other JLA members are able to contribute without overwhelming Wonder Woman's importance
One of the strengths of the book is the use of the normal woman. Secondary characters can make or break these books. As there really isn't going to be any earth shaking revelations about the JLA or massive character growth the handling of secondary characters is where the author gets a chance to portray such events. In this case, the minor character is handled very well to drive the plot forward, provoke interest and caring from the reader and provide some good humor.
There are some weak and/or slow moments, particularly the time Wonder Woman spends on her home island. Once we reach one third of the way in though, the pace picks up and drives forward without being relentless.
The flaws do not overshadow the strengths, nor do they prevent it from being an enjoyable read. Not a great read, but a fun read, and quite superior to The Stone King.
Great Read.......2005-06-14
This is the first book that I have read of the series and of the author. I have to say it was a great read. Nothing overally exciting, but it was smooth, took a little over a day to take in. The writing style was very nice, and the idealisms of the characters converted very nicely into book print. Although I was a little disapointed by some of the characteristics of the heros, I did respect someone else's take on them. I would recommend this book for anyone with a love of Wonder Woman or a love for JLA in general.
great story keeps you guessing to the end........2004-04-17
this book starts out with a honeymoon couple diving aroung the bermuda triangle. the man goes missing and the justice league and especially wonder woman thinks that he may have found a mytholgical island like her own paradise island. wonder woman goes on a hunt for the diver, and soon there are 4 other members of the justice league with her battling for the world against a formidiable opponent.
this book is just remarkable. from the use of ancient greek gods to the use of oracle from the birds of prey tv show, the author brings them all together in a truely unforgettable book. i had my doubts when i first bought it but i was pleasantly surprised.
i loved the tv show the birds of prey and was most disappointed when they cancelled it. it is nice to see that the legend lives in print if not on tv.

Book Description
Batman prefers to work alone–but the Justice League needs him to be a team player if they’re going to keep the World Assembly meeting peaceful. With tensions simmering between two European countries, Batman follows his own instincts instead of working with the group. Hawkgirl demands to go with him, determined to help. But with two clashing styles of fighting, they’re going to have to learn to deal with each other before they can save the world. And that might take more time than the World Assembly can spare.

Review From a Future Critic.......2005-06-09
This book had a very good plot where Batman and Hawkgirl had to use their detective skills well.
read like a classic team up.......2003-06-06
While a Justice League book, the focus of this one is mostly on the team up Batman and Hawkgirl. The rest of the JL is there, playing supporting parts - which works for this story.
The interplay between the animated versions of Batman and Hawkgirl are interesting. There is also hinted details to this Hawkgirl's past that we have yet to see much glimpse of on the show. I'd like to read another teaming of these two when Batman is a bit more up to his game (you understand what I mean when you read the book...).
Dynamic Detectives.......2002-11-22
When the leaders of the warring nations of Luristan and Kaznia agree to meet in at the World Assembly in Metropolis, the Justice League goes on full alert. Superman heads up the group that includes Batman, Green Lantern, Flash, Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Woman. Bane, the international mercenary powered by the super-soldier drug Venom, heads up a crew designed to tear the peace talks apart and plunge the nations back into war. While the rest of the Justice Leaguers hold back Bane's minions and ensure that the peace talks are left intact, Batman and Hawkgirl utilize their detective skills to track Bane down and discover what's really at stake in the attacks. However, Batman hasn't slept in two days and isn't at his best, and his lack of performance is clouding the relationship he has with Hawkgirl.
Michael Jan Friedman has also written JUSTICE LEAGUE: IN DARKEST NIGHT, the second book in the series based on the Cartoon Network hit television show. In addition to the comic- and cartoon-based novels, Friedman has written more than 160 comic books. The author has also contributed to Star Trek Starfleet Year One, Star Trek the Original Series, Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Deep Space Nine, Star Trek Voyager, as well as several mini-series within the franchise. He also wrote the only Star Trek Next Generation/X-Men crossover. Other novels spawned from comic book properties include a Fantastic Four adventure: THE REDEMPTION OF THE SILVER SURFER, Superman novels, and X-Men novels. He's also a contributor to the Wishbone adventures, displaying a versatility and wide interest.
WINGS OF WAR is a fast-paced and exciting read. With the quick cuts back and forth among the characters the novel feels very much like one of the cartoon episodes. Readers who sit down with this novel will probably read straight through the adventure, or long to get back to the book during those time it has to be put aside. The author does a really good job of showcasing each character a little, and doing a lot of character interplay between Batman and Hawkgirl. Plenty of action and superpowers fill the pages, building exciting images in a reader's head, but the mystery that is presented for Batman and Hawkgirl is well done, allowing each of them to step forward and be the lead detective at one time or another. Each is allowed his and her expertise.
Fans of the comic book series or cartoon series will definitely want to pick this book up. In addition to showcasing Batman and Hawkgirl, the story is fun and quick, just the way an episode plays out. Parents will want to pick this book up for reluctant readers who enjoy the television show. Friedman's style and delivery are highly visual and those reluctant readers will have no problem at all imagining the adventures that the super-heroes share.

Never ending battle.......2007-02-13
overall i was pleased with the book. i like how the novel isnt just about superman but all of the major JLA characters and even some minor ones like The Atom. i think the characters stayed true to there characterization. superman is and always will be the nicest most polite person in the world. the only problem i had with the book is the plot. specificly the bad guy. i dont want t o give it away but it turns out to be a normal man, not Dark seid or doomsday or lex luthor...just a regular villian human varity. i think superman was overkill for the baddy. Batman could have handeld the entire situation. the only thing superman and the other superpowered people int he JLA were good for was stoping the "natural Disasters" which in my opinion is unrealistic. i dont think there was any inocent loss of life which...come on. whatever. i read Stone King liked it, i read Stop motion liked it, i read Exterminators i really like it and now Never ending battle is good too. next i will read Green Lanterns Hero's quest. i know im reading them out of order but its like there a series. maybe i will pick up Wonder Womans book but its not looking good. and by the way... Where is the Martian Manhunters novel!!!
Solid but unspectacular.......2007-01-30
There's little to object to, continuity- or character-wise, in this workmanlike product by veteran comics writer Roger Stern. Nor is there anything to be particularly enthused about in terms of interesting story or character insights. Imagine a stand-alone giant-size/annual by a guest writer, and you've got this tale. Entertaining but ultimately forgettable. Glad I read it, but not thinking I'll go back and read it again.
Not as much Superman.......2005-09-01
In the JLA's Superman novel, "Superman: The Never-Ending Battle", The Justice League of America is investigating the cause of strange weather patterens in the United States. Superman is the main hero in this installment in the JLA series, and while he dose techniclly get more coverage than the other superfriends, he is not as prominant as I'd have expected. Sure, we get a lot of local Metropolis flavour with Lois Lane, The Daily Planet, ect. But a lot of the book is also dedicated to The Batman's search of a cargo ship of chemicals and other heros efforts to save the world. I realize that it is about the Justice League than about the individual champions (and indeed that is one theme of the book, team work and sharing the work load) but the cover of the book is of the yellow and red 'S' and the blue suit; so I was expecting much more of the Man of Tommorow. Though don't get me wrong, the background on some of the other heros was facinating. For example I did not know that Wally West is actually the third generation Flash. And the other thing is that the villians were not really Superman's either. Kobra, the brains behind the massive plot, is a foe of Batman's. And The Weather Wizard, who is manipulated into controling the weather, is The Flash's enemy. I like cross over as much as the next guy, but I was really anting to see a real threat to Superman, like Brainiac, Doomsday, or even Lex Luthor. Please do not get me wrong, this is a good book, very fast paced (you could say faster than a speeding bullet, but why be that corny, right), and the relationships were well established, especially the friendly rivalry between Clark Kent/Superman and Bruce Wayne/Batman. The plot was propperly epic for this superhero, and it also seemed sort of timely, America attacked by religious fanatics (though not too close to reality to be a satire or critisism).
Not bad, not great........2005-08-09
Overall, I enjoyed "Superman: The Never-Ending Battle" more than "Green Lantern: Hero's Quest" ... but not enough to give it that extra star in the rating.
I usually discuss my most notable likes and dislikes about the books I read, but the fact that I am having trouble with this one says something on its own. The book was an almost perfect "So-So." It was not really good, it was not really bad. There were SMALL elements that I liked, such as Superman's description of how it feels to fly. There were EQUALLY small elements that I did NOT like, such as the over use of Wonder Woman's plane.
But that's just it. These are LITTLE pluses and minuses. With the Green Lantern novel, I thought that the first half was better than the second half. THIS book was pretty much level all the way through. I would think of this book as a "5" out of 10, then as a 6, then back to a 5, then as a 4, the back to a 5. And so on and so on. You get the idea.
In the end, I decided it was just that: A middle of the road book. It was worth the time it took to read. Nothing more and nothing less ... but I guess it ALSO says something that, in the end, I AM now curious about reading the other Justice League of America books. Hmm. I guess it's too bad Amazon doesn't allow 3 ½ stars after all.
Great to see ROGER STERN in the "saddle" again!.......2005-08-07
Roger Stern was a long-time writer of Superman in the late eighties and early nineties, with a well-remembered run on the character. He is one of the great "second generation" comic writers who came to prominence during the seventies and eighties, and his Superman run (along with a great Spider-Man run and an even better Avengers run for Marvel) is surely one of his career highlights. Few writers understand the Man of Steel or Metropolis the way Stern does, and it's great to see him back in control of one of his signature characters, even if it isn't on the comics themselves.
