Book Description
A visual odyssey that will change the way we see our planet, this remarkable book, companion to the acclaimed Discovery Channel/ BBC series, is an enduring and awe-inspiring record of one of the most ambitious natural history projects ever undertaken. Using the latest aerial surveillance, state-of-the-art cameras, and high definition technology, the creators of Planet Earth have assembled more than 400 stunning photographs of wondrous natural landscapes from around the globe, including incredible footage of the rarely spotted, almost mythical creatures that live in these habitats. Many of the images reveal inaccessible places that few have seen and record animal behavior that has never been filmed or photographed before. With the help of this highly advanced technology and the world's premier wildlife photographers, the book takes us on a spectacular journey from the world's greatest rivers and impressive gorges, to its mightiest mountains, hidden caves and caverns, and vast deserts. Planet Earth captures breathtaking sequences of predators and their prey, lush vistas of forests viewed from the tops of towering trees, the oceans and their mysterious creatures viewed from beneath the surface, and much more--in a magnificent adventure that brings unknown wonders of the natural world into our living rooms.

Children and adults of all ages should take a look at this. It is absolutely amazing.

Incredible and unbelievably beautiful photographs -- wonderful perspectives!

The book is wonderful. I have not watched all of the DVD's yet, but am sure they will not disappoint...

Perfection.......2007-05-25
This book is a masterpiece. It is full of beautiful photography. The text is easy to read and understand.
I have it displayed on a table in my living room and when guests are over the book always catches someone's attention. They can't resist picking it up and always exclaim over it and want to know where I found this book! It has even caught the attention of teenagers!
Only one complaint.......2007-05-20
Most of the books images have been poorly resized upwards. Almost every image is marred by pixelization -- Zebra stripes have jagged stairsteps. While original digital footage was shot with enough resolution for HD DVD, those screen captures do not have enough detail for good prints.

Book Description
“I don’t have two lives,” Annie Leibovitz writes in the Introduction to this collection of her work from 1990—2005. “This is one life, and the personal pictures and the assignment work are all part of it.” Portraits of well-known figures–Johnny Cash, Nicole Kidman, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Keith Richards, Michael Jordan, Joan Didion, R2-D2, Patti Smith, Nelson Mandela, Jack Nicholson, William Burroughs, George W. Bush with members of his Cabinet–appear alongside pictures of Leibovitz’s family and friends, reportage from the siege of Sarajevo in the early Nineties, and landscapes made even more indelible through Leibovitz’s discerning eye. The images form a narrative rich in contrasts and continuities: The photographer has a long relationship that ends with illness and death. She chronicles the celebrations and heartbreaks of her large and robust family. She has children of her own. All the while she is working, and the public work resonates with the themes of her life.

Great photographic portraitists, like Leibovitz, become someone to whom people want to reveal themselves.......2007-05-18
I opened this book with anticipation. I washed my hands so I would not mar or fingerprint the photos. And I removed the dust jacket to keep it nice. Annie Leibovitz' artistry compels me to treat her artworks with respect and care. I appreciated the book's large size, because I love large, beautiful images.
Some people probably think portrait photographer's are gifted because they know how to stage a great photo. That is probably true. But I think the less often recognized talent is seeing who people become in the presence of a portraiture artist. When people are in Annie Leibovitz' presence, I think they may ask themselves: What images do I want to define me? What images do I want to represent me for a long time? Around Leibovitz, her subjects become regal, considered, relaxed, and sincere. Sure, the comedians are still cheesing it up for the camera sometimes. But most of her subjects realize this may be one of the few times an image will be created that may portray them in a substantive and enduring light.
In the introduction, Leibovitz' notes "But after Susan died, . . ." And when I read those words, the above thought formed in my head. Leibovitz' subjects realize her photos may be a dominant defining, popularly-known image of them after they are dead. So I think her subjects make extra effort to become something larger than 'everyday' in her presence.
I don't like to make criticisms in my reviews, and I tend to only review artworks I recommend. But it takes more than great photographs to make a great photography book. I was frustrated with the number of photographs that were enlarged across the book gutter, breaking up the photos' flows. Bigger is not always better and many of the photos would have been better as smaller images on one page. Alternatively, produce the book in two volumes, one volume in portrait, the second volume in landscape. If we're going to put down $75 for one large book, then we probably would be willing to put down $50 twice for two better shaped volumes that adapted to the needs of the photographs.
Some artists can find great art and photograph it professionally. Some artists can re-interpret or choose a point of view that makes their photograph of something otherwise unremarkable into something artful. And some artists seem to have the effect of making the people, social moods, and environments around them more artfully active and aware. Leibovitz' photos reveal that she does all three of those things well.
The more sensient her subject matter, the better her photography. She draws out great intelligence and creativity from the people she is interacting with. Her photos show not only her subjects' uncommonly revealed personas, but also her encouraging, emboldending, and enlightening effects on the people in her presence. Leibovitz' artistry suggests to portraitists that if you want your subject to reveal uncommon beauty in your image of them, first create an atmosphere where they are want to reveal the same to you.
insighful.......2007-05-16
After my sister worked with Annie in a photo shoot here in Madrid, she recommended I buy this book, since I have always been a huge fan of Annie. This book is very insightful and complete of her work.
Shoot t the graphic design team.......2007-03-24
After seeing the exhibition (which was fantastic) the book was a sad let down for me and I returned it. Photos were cropped detroying the ambiance or the layout Leibovitz captured and aparently intended in her prints - photos were designed across a spread in such a way as interfered with the photo's integrity (one photo in particular has the page split running through the subject of the photo!). The personal photos of Sonatag in the show were very small and suggested a particular delicacy and intimacy which was lost in the book due to the relative sizing of those prints with all the others. It is a poor accompaniment to an excellent and important show of her work. If you never saw the show - you could propably let it slide - after seeing the show myself, I prefer not to have my memory tainted by an inferior product serving as representation.
In the Gutter!.......2007-03-21
GREAT PHOTOS BUT ANNOYING TO LOOK AT!!!! Visually this book is claustrophobic. The images seem forced to fit into a book that is too small to hold them. And probably half of the pictures are across the gutter--very annoying. Sometimes the most important part of the picture is in the gutter. My personal favorite is Michael Jordan with his nose in the gutter. Random House, if you are going to do a book on a great photographer like Annie Liebovitz, do a better job than this.
Breathtaking!.......2007-03-17
It was refreshing to see a collection of Annie's work that focuses more on the person behind the camera than the people in front of it. While I love the photos she does for the magazines, I was tired of seeing books that focused on that. That's too superficial to me. I was interested in getting into her soul. And this book gave it to me!
From the introduction pages to the final snapshots of her children, this book kept me drawn in. I felt like I was there with her experiencing all the events. It gave me a personal glimpse of what she's been through without being intrusive. If I were to be really picky, I would say that, yes, there are some pretty obvious technical mistakes. Especially for someone as experienced as herself. But that's not what this book is about. If you want the technically flawless and aesthetically perfect stuff, go look in Vogue or Vanity Fair. If you want to see a bit of her heart and soul, get this book.

At last, the comprehensive book of cartoons from beloved New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast.
Customer Reviews:
Theories of Everything Exceeeds Expectations.......2007-05-21
I've been a fan of Roz Chatz's work for just about 30 years. This amazing compendeum does not dissapoint. It's more than just looking at cartoons. It's a real READ. I spent about two or three weeks perusing this volume. Unlike most "cartoon books" this one has intellectual weight. It is both insightful and F U N N Y! If you are at all familiar with this artist/writer's work than THEORIES OF EVERYTHING is a must for your library.
A very funny lady.......2007-05-15
I love the quirky, definitely neurotic humor to be found
in this treasure of cartoons. A great brouse when I need
a laugh.
Outstanding humor by Roz Chast.......2007-05-06
Mix the neurosis of the young Woody Allen, the sublime-but-unexpected logic of comedian Steven Wright, the macabre wink of Gahan Wilson, the grand guignol of Charles Addams, the cleverness of the Far Side -- with just a dash of the heart-strings and plaintive cuteness of Cathy Guisewhite -- and you may have something like the outstandingly amusing cartoons of Roz Chast. Penned in a manner that suggests hands trembling constantly from too much coffee or perhaps too little electroshock therapy, there is a pervasive nervous energy in this work that, frankly, makes you want to stop looking at them after a while, in the same way that a strong vinaigrette forces you to pause between bites. You go back, of course, because it's delicious. But you can't take too much at one time.
The targets of Ms. Chast's work include just about everything and everybody you will encounter in your life and it is very unlikely there is an interpersonal relationship you are suffering through that will not be present on these pages in a way that helps you laugh at your own small worries. She also nicely deals with the blither of modern life, from retail stores to the proliferation of award categories.
Roz Chast's work is jittery and completely on-target. I recommend this book highly to those who like off-beat visual humor.
Brilliantly insightful.......2007-03-23
Roz Chast has the uncanny ability to find hilarity in the everyday. Her cartoons will have you laughing out loud in recognition of your own similar experiences, feelings and thoughts (both as a child and as an adult). Unlike many collections of cartoons, there is hardly a dud among the hundreds collected here. Highly recommended.
String theory.......2007-03-21
If the universe is really made up of tiny strings, as some physicists argue, the work of cartoonist Roz Chast is the first comprehensive, and comprehensible, proof.
Almost 30 years of Chast's nervous little drawings, created mainly for The New Yorker, have been collected in a ridiculously huge volume called "Theories of Everything," published by Bloomsbury. David Remnick, editor of the New Yorker, introduces the collection.
The book's weighty title (and weighty weight) is part of the joke. Chast's kitchen-sink characters and fussy squiggles insult the very notion of a pretentious coffee-table book. Each panel looks as if it's been crumpled up, left in the pocket of a denim jumper and sent through the wash twice. The pages swarm with balding, dot-eyed men, dowdy ladies in horn-rimmed glasses, and dumb kids with one protruding tooth. Background objects like floor rugs, lamps and couches are rendered as itchy glyphs.
Under the big-little-book joke, however, lies a big-big-book genius. Using bathwater-gray washes and tiny lines that clump like hair in a bathroom drain, Chast maps out the interstices of the human mind, the between-meals, between-shaves, between-everything hours that fill the vast majority of life.
For example, as a man watches an opera, we are privy to his innermost thoughts. "La, la, la, duck falling off a ladder...ha, ha, Ethel Merman's shoe," he muses to himself as he falls asleep. Another man sits on a couch with a thought balloon over his head: "Birth, bed, bath, beer, bankruptcy, bunions, bifocals, balding and beyond."
Thanks to the unfathomable origami of Chast's thought processes, we learn of suddenly indispensable categories of behavior such as the "mini-rebellion:" "When writing a thank-you letter for a disliked gift, make deliberate spelling and grammatical errors."
This is not the "have you ever noticed?" lint dredged by hundreds of stand-up comics. Life is a big deal, Chast seems to say -- just not in the way everybody wants you to think it is. If you're looking for the essence of the universe, better to contemplate the mysteriously shifting doily on the sofa or that doomed restaurant on the corner that keeps changing hands.
On one page, she lays out the contents of a mock-ambitious book entitled "The Piece of Thread," including dedication, acknowledgments and copyright page. Is she skewering self-important authors or celebrating the cheerful human delusion that life and work have meaning? Why pick?
Chast loves to layer alien categories on top of one another, where they wobble like incompatible jello molds. In "How Much Should You Tip?" she informs us that for teachers, "20 percent of tuition at the end of the semester is the usual amount." A panel from "Adult Absence Notes" reads: "Please excuse my daughter from conjugal duties tonight. She has a 24-hour virus."
Since Chast's first cartoon was published in 1978, her work has moved away from cryptic visual haikus to longer storylines, some of them skirting the abyss of marital-miscommunication and child-rearing humor best left to less gifted humorists. Many of the longer stories, however, penetrate into corners of the mind never plumbed by poets, philosophers or psychiatrists.
In "Millie's Gear Slips," arguably Chast's masterpiece, a woman suddenly realizes she has forgotten to bring her sweater on a family vacation. It takes only four minutes and 11 seconds to turn around and get the sweater, but Millie becomes obsessed with the time gap. "This is exactly the place I would have been four minutes and 11 seconds ago, but now it's slightly different, and I'll never see what I was supposed to see," she keeps thinking.
In gets worse in ways that are worth describing because they reveal the essence of Chast.
Millie sits in the passenger seat, her husband and family grinning obliviously as she reaches a horrifying inner conclusion: "My real life now = (my real life) - (four minutes + 11 seconds)!" (Chast has a mild obsession with mathematics that frequenly pops up in unsuitable contexts.) In a classic Chastian moment, Millie stands in the supermarket, thinking "Normally I would have been in Aisle Three, but here I am, amongst the produce."
Amongst the produce! You lose half the humor without the visuals, but suffice it to say only Chast could have turned that phrase. She peels life's onion from normal to strange and back to normal with the skill of an existential Julia Child. Thanks to this generous new collection, her fans can linger "amongst the produce" as long as they please.

Say no to silicone: The greatest natural breasts of our times
Some call it the American obsession, but men everywhere recognize the hypnotic allure of a large and shapely breast. In The Big Book of Breasts, Dian Hanson explores the origins of mammary madness through three decades of natural big-breasted nudes. Starting with the World War II Bosom-Mania that spawned Russ Meyer, Howard Hughes's The Outlaw and Frederick's of Hollywood, Dian guides you over, around, and in between the dangerous curves of infamous models including Michelle Angelo, Candy Barr, Virginia Bell, Joan Brinkman, Lorraine Burnett, Lisa De Leeuw, Uschi Digard, Candye Kane, Jennie Lee, Sylvia McFarland, Margaret Middleton, Paula Page, June Palmer, Roberta Pedon, Rosina Revelle, Candy Samples, Tempest Storm, Linda West, June Wilkinson, Julie Wills, and dozens more, including Guinness World Record holder Norma Stitz, possessor of the World's Largest Natural Breasts.
Customer Reviews:
A high quality book for the right audience...........2007-06-24
I review a lot of different kinds of books including art and photography. This is a large, heavy, well-made volume that is targeted to people who appreciate the beauty of the female form as it appeared in pop art between the 40s and 70s. It is printed on very high quality paper and the images are more "artsy" than "erotic." However, I'm sure people who enjoy the nudes of this period highly charged.
There are many creative shots in this book and the women all have natural breasts. While this type of art is not my cup of tea, all of the images are large and high resolution. Would you expect less from Taschen. There is a pin up quality to most of the pictures and certainly this book is of historical interest to photographers of nudes or anyone who appreciates female beauty.
I wouldn't personally classify this as "light porn." The pictures are more naughty than pornographic and there are a lot of good facial shots where the woman's personality or some quality of her personality is captured. The lighting is often creative and the images follow a similar style, but the pictures aren't redundant.
I also think this book is fairly priced. I'm going to sell my copy only becuase it's not my thing. I prefer nude photography that is more abstract, uses lots of shadows in interesting ways and focuses on form. The nearer the photographs approach a sculpture of painting, the better for me whether it is male or female art. I also like more variety, styles and other creative elements. Cygny would be an example of one of my favorite photographers of nudes as well as Robert Farber.
A regular dude.......2007-05-13
I wish I would have kept my money.
Some nice pictures, but not worth the money
Boy Does This Make A Good Birthday Present For A Guy.......2007-04-14
I speak from personal experience. I got this for someone and, heck, I've barely seen him since, and when I have, he's been smiling. Oh, sure, make no mistake, the photography work is excellent, as is the overall depth of the study of this subject matter, but let's face it, at heart it's a picture book. Trust me, this is one gift that'll never get returned!
Truly Awesome.......2007-03-03
This book is very well titled. Everything about it is big, including the physical size of the book itself. Its not one you can slip past your wife unnoticed. It's a joy to look at though. Famous names from the past such as Paula Page and Linda West. (Now she is the sort of woman you could happily marry) A cavalcade of great beauties, (and gorgeous women) on every turn of the page that will take your breath away. It puts me in mind of the erotic magazines of many years ago, that were filled with just pictures of beautiful goddesses. It would be wonderful to see those stars as they are now.
The book goes through the decades and all the models are a joy to look at. None of your scrawny cat walk size 0s here, just full figured natural womanhood. Also included are the very well endowed Chesty Morgan and the ultimate of ultimates, Norma Stitz. If you like your women well developed then this is the book for you. I would highly recommend it. Also in a similar vein, if you like erotic stories about mature well proportioned women (and indeed men) then have a look at 100 PERCENT EROTICA by Suzie Van Aartman.
This book is busted.......2007-02-21
I cannot recommend this book except to teenage boys. Too much of a good thing gets boring and this book is a yawner. Also the cover is printed incorrectly, so that the black bra is misaligned by 1/2" and hanging in the air on one end. Save your money for something more fun.

Customer Reviews:
Misleading title.......2007-06-12
The book should be called "The New Female Nude Photography". No sex here. Nothing wrong with that, I just feel the title is a bit misleading. Quality is up to Taschen standards (they're really high), but the content is somewhat dull. There's nothing terribly creative or groundbreaking here.
Wonderful Collection.......2007-05-12
The book contains a variety of photographers, with each presenting a short series of well done photos, using many different models. The overall quality of the collection is outstanding. I was particularly impressed with the highly detailed nature of the photos. For devotees of erotic photography, I would definitely recommend this book.

Book Description
In Vogue is a fascinating look at the history of the world's most influential magazine. The complete compendium is illustrated with hundreds of covers and archival interiors of past Vogue editions, featuring the work of some of the twentieth century's most respected artists, cover illustrators, and photographersâfrom Edward Steichen, Toni Frissell, and Erwin Blumenfeld to Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, David Bailey, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Bruce Webber, and Herb Ritts. In 1909, an entrepreneurial New Yorker named Condé Nast took charge of a struggling society journal and transformed it into the most glamorous fashion magazine of the twentieth century. In Vogue traces the history, development and influence of this media colossusâfrom its beginning as a social gazette in the late nineteenth century, to the exploration of modern fashion photography and new visuals in the mid-twentieth century, to its status as the top style magazine today. The book explains the makings of the magazineâfrom runways, to editorial meetings, to the pages of Vogue. The thoroughly researched story incorporates first-person accounts, interviews with editors and photographers, and excerpts from stories written in the magazine by many world-renowned writers, including Truman Capote, Aldous Huxley, Richard Burton, Federico Fellini, and Marcello Mastroianni. Unparalleled in its scope and exceptionally illustrated, In Vogue is sure to be among the most important publications on the subjects of culture, art, fashion, photography, and media.
Customer Reviews:
Just OK........2007-06-28
I liked the information and photos about the early Vogue, and wish there was more of it. I was not so interested in the later stuff, as it seemed overly self-important. Instead of presenting fashion, the current Vogue seems to commision special clothes for its photo shoots. What's the point if you can't buy that? Plus the photos don't even show what the clothes look like. I have better books on fashion, but this really was about the history of the magazine, and as such it succeeds. I just don't happen to like the magazine as it never shows anything I'd want to wear.
Magnificient overview of an iconic magazine.......2007-06-22
Ten gets you one that when you ask someone to name a fashion magazine, the first answer you get will be, "Vogue". That's how much of an institution the magazine has become. While "Elle" and "Women's Wear Daily" might dispute the contention, "Vogue" seems to have become the periodical of record for worldwide haute couture. As such, as the authors note in their introduction, a basic history is past due. With a great deal of help from the Vogue staff itself - Anna Wintour, the magazine's longtime editor (and so prominent a figure in her own right that Meryl Streep's spoof of her in last year's movie "The Devil Wears Prada" was instantly recognizable), is prominent in the list of contributors - Angeletti and Oliva, magazine historians both, have assembled an informative text and a gorgeous array of imagery which effectively covers the century-plus history of Vogue, from the cover of the very first magazine to the latest photos of Nicole Kidman. The book is certainly a highly display-worthy item, as another reviewer has suggested, but more than that, it's meant to be leafed through and read. You can find it brand-new at a wide variety of prices, but even if all the Amazon Marketplace sellers were somehow sold out of their copies, it'd still be worth the list price!
A travel through time by book.......2007-05-14
The authors of In Vogue composed a diversified chronicle of the appearance and the development of Vogue from 1892 until today. The photographs chosen portray the history of fashion photography wonderfully, each of them either a ravishing new sight or a spectacular recognition. The structuring by Decade, introduction of publishers, contributing editors, photographers, etc interposed by special contributions and excerpts of resumes offers the reader a diverting journey trough publishing history in general and the publishing of fashion in particular.

great extensive fashion history on Vogue magazine: superb pictures, designers, models....
In Vogue: The illustrated history.......2007-03-22
This wonderful history of pages of the fashion magazine provides a document of the tastes, styles and socio-political conditions of over a century. The first class photographs from the lenses of prime photographers, palettes and studios of some of the most famous artists of the period, supplemented with informative text, reflect times of elegance and decadence.

In this fanciful volume, Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, founder of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.), both analyzes and celebrates New York City. By suggesting the city as the site for an infinite variety of human activities and events--both real and imagined--the essence of the metropolitan lifestyle, its "culture of congestion" and its architecture are revealed in a brilliant new light. "Manhattan," Koolhaas writes, "is the 20th century's Rosetta stone . . . occupied by architectural mutations (Central Park, the Skyscraper), utopian fragments (Rockefeller Center, the U.N. Building), and irrational phenomena (Radio City Music Hall)." Filled with fascinating facts, as well as photographs, postcards, maps, watercolors, and drawings, the vibrancy of Koolhaas's poignant exploration of Gotham equals the heady, frenetic energy of the city itself. Anyone who loves New York will want to own this book.

What an interesting philosophical dissertation.......2007-02-05
through the exhaustive historiography of the phases of congestion coney island brought to manhattan, koolhaas provides a rather cynical view of the Grid as being an ulimatley neutral zoning system of constraining ideas that represent the continual decline of a phantastically realistic civilization, represented as mutated symbols of architecture in the "void" of repeated "pregnancies."
it's really well written. funny. uses, like above, a somewhat inefficient vocabulary but remains in the same vein throughout. it is also a graphic design hubris consuming every page, even the left-justified text, showing off koolhaas's interpretation of the importance to combine scholarship and marketing.
buy it. it's a very good book.
Way Too Much To Think About Sometimes.... .......2006-11-09
A very inventive concept of New York's "culture of congestion" and how people are affected by the architecture they create. It is heavily researched and exhaustive, and after pretty much the third page I agreed with his concept of NY being "totally fabricated by man". What could of been a fascinating article becomes a spastic, heavy-handed read with a sledgehammer effect to your brain. (However, for those of us reading it for school, there are plenty of pictures that fill up the almost devastatingly vast 300+pages quickly.) It will scramble your brain with its thousands of nearly bumper-stickerish statements ("It hides life." "The Mountain MUST become architecture.") written with pretentious glee. However, I believe an independent scientific study has concluded that when pretending to read this book on the train people around you will assume your IQ is 40% higher than truth.
Eating oysters with boxing gloves, naked, on the nth floor........2005-05-25
The quote written above is excerpted from Delirious New York. It is a perfect example of the lyrical quality of the writing prevalent throughout this amazing book. Delirious New York is not an objective chronological listing of New York's development, but a collection of manifestos and stories with opinionated perspectives about a city founded on the idea that maximum congestion is a desirable factor. It is informative, funny (the midget firefighters of Coney Island had me laughing aloud for a solid minute or two), twisted, and inspiring.
Rem Koolhaas is edgier and far more interesting literary figure in architecture than say, Le Corbusier. Koolhaas's analytical yet shockingly refreshing writing style is a blessing for architecture, since he stays away from academic incoherent writing style that most architectural historians and architects tend to employ.
Get a copy of this book if eclectic (and at times disturbing) tales of architecture and urban development is something you think you will enjoy.
best koolhaas ever, man.......2004-01-30
koolhaas is a bit over-the-top for me, but this I think is is best work. it's worth checking out if only for the story of coney island. once you get past blisteringly pretentious phrases like "coney island is a fetal manhattan", you'll find it gloriously entertaining as both a narrative and theoretical work.
the culture of congestion.......2002-12-24
This is by far Koolhaas's most accessible work, as it is rooted so clearly in detail from the city's past. Further, the book is simply brilliant. His take on urban history is to Jane Jacobs what Socrates is to common sense. New York is a special case of modernism that sprang from a special constellation of poltiical and technological forces that collectively create a cultural "big-bang" at the turn of the century. Read it. Blow your mind.

Book Description
The market-leading text for the art history survey course, GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES has served as a comprehensive and thoughtfully crafted guide to the defining phases of the world's artistic tradition. With this book in hand, thousands of students have watched the story of art unfold in its full historical, social, religious, economic, and cultural context, and thus deepened their understanding of art, architecture, painting, and sculpture. By virtue of its comprehensive coverage, strong emphasis on context, and rich, accurate art reproductions, GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES has earned and sustained a reputation of excellence and authority. So much so, that in 2001, the Text and Academic Authors Association awarded both the McGuffey and the "Texty" Book Prizes to the Eleventh Edition of the text. It is the first art history book to win either award and the only title ever to win both prizes in one year. The Twelfth Edition maintains and exceeds the richness of the Gardner legacy with updated research and scholarship and an even more beautiful art program featuring more color images than any other art history book available. The Twelfth Edition features such enhancements as more color photographs, a stunning new design, and the most current research and scholarship. What's more, the expanded ancillary package that accompanies GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES, features a wealth of tools to enhance your students' experience in the course. With each new copy of the book, students receive a copy of the ArtStudy 2.0 CD-ROM--an interactive electronic study aid that fully integrates with the Twelfth Edition and includes hundreds of high-quality digital images, plus maps, quizzes, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good Art Histoy book.......2007-03-09
Although the text covers quite a bit, I can't help but feel a bit annoyed in its arbitrary, and sometimes misleading use of chronology. For instance, Heironymus Bosch is covered in the 15th century nothern art chapter, when it seems to me he should be covered in the 16th century northern art chapter, along with Pieter Breugel and Dürer.
Of course this might be somewhat arbitrary too, but I can't help but be annoyed.
Still, despite this one little problem I have with the text, it is very comprehensive. The works are very well reproduced, and in color too, which is delightful.
I know this isn't a helpful review, but I'll conclude saying despite some disagreements I have with the organization of the text, it is still an award winning text and well written. Unlike other textbooks I have, I have no problem reading the chapters without falling asleep. This is a big big plus.
Gardner's Art Through the Ages, Volume II (Chapters 19-34).......2007-02-19
It came pretty quick and was in good condition.
An earlier edition second hand .......2006-11-25
I'm currently working my way through the 8th Ed of this book which I picked up second hand. I'm finding it to be a very good read - the passage of art through the ages is woven together well with the various "ism's" explained well. I'd consider this book to form the foundation of an art book collection, using it as a springboard in to more advanced/theoretical tomes. I have no idea what the 12th Edition contains but I would question having to pay $100 for a copy. Find a earlier edition, second hand and then grab a newer copy to see what new "ism's" have been added. I cannot imagine that the body of the main text has changed much, the most recent edition probably has greater coverage of the "Post-Modernism" and whatever is currently in vogue.
The Old-Soldier of Art History Texts never dies (unfortunately). . . ........2006-01-09
Gardners' has long been regarded as the rather stuffy "bible" of art history texts, mainly because of its commercial longevity (it's been around since the 1930s). Recent editions have suffered under recent editorship. The addition of tiresome "clever" subtitles, coupled with the creeping-in of a new shallower "touchy-feelie" approach to the exegesis of the artworks--no doubt intended to perk-up this withering old warhorse--are sad things to behold. Readers are well-advised to select instead the far superior ART HISTORY by MARILYN STOKSTAD. It is everything Gardners' used to be...and more.

The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming is a spiritual adventure story. A chance encounter with a poster depicting a detail of Rembrandt's The Return of the Prodigal Son set in motion a chain of events that enabled Nouwen to redefine and claim his vocation late in his life. In this book, which interweaves elements of art history, memoir, Midrash, and self-help, Nouwen brings the parable to life with empathic analyses of each character. Nouwen's absorption in the story (and the painting) is so complete that the father's challenge to love the son, and the son's challenge to receive that love, become Nouwen's own. And Nouwen's writing is so clear and his tone is so appealingly frank and humble that readers--no matter how far from home--will find hope for themselves in the prodigal peace Nouwen ultimately achieves. --Michael Joseph Gross

A must for those in recovery.......2007-06-27
I love this book. I could completely identify with all aspects of the Prodigal Son and Henri Neuwen is a great writer. I have read several of his books and find they help me deepen in my spiritual path, even though I am not a "Christian" in the fundamental definition.
My favorite.......2007-06-11
This is my favorite book of all time. I work with teens in a second year confirmation program and bought a copy for them. As of yet, none have actually made any headway but my hope is that it remains on their shelves as a permanent part of their library and that someday they will go back and flip through, discover its worth and wisdom and reference it throughout their lives as I have.
I turn to this whenever I need some inspiration. It renews me the way a good mass does.
Return of the Prodigal Son.......2007-05-25
Nouwen provides great insight into God's character and our walk with Him. The book is written almost like a journal and at times like a biography (of Rembrandt). This is one of my favorite books of all times.
A message for all people.......2007-05-12
This is my #1 pick of all Henri Nouwen wrote for the world. I have bought many copies of this book to give as gifts. It has touched the hearts of every recipient. It is a must read for everyone.
The Parable of the Love of the Father.......2007-04-01
I have heard the story of the Prodigal Son all my life, but Nouwen's discussion of it has drawn my heart to the Father more than anything has for a long time. I have just ordered my second copy because I marked up the first one so badly on my first reading that my copious notes now distract me!
Nouwen takes us through his own journey of spiritual discovery that was triggered by his fascination with Rembrandt's painting of the same name. While he refers to the painting more than to the biblical text, his exploration of the story is consistent (with only one or two exceptions that I can think of) with the text and its true meaning.
He directly but gently challenges us to consider in what ways we are like the prodigal son and in what ways we are like the elder brother. While I felt some pangs of recognition and remorse while I was reading it, it was never discouraging or disheartening, because Nouwen constantly reminds of us the unchanging, undeserved and undeniable love of the Father Who is always calling us home. While some sermons or books make me feel sad or guilty that I have 'left home', this one makes me _want_ to come home to the Father.
And then he adds an interpretive twist that I have never heard before: he calls us to become the _father_, to become like our Heavenly Father in loving and calling others home. too. We embark on a dual journey of becoming the beloved son or daughter of God so that we can become a father who loves as He loves.
Here is a summary passage that gives a taste of where Nouwen takes us on our journey:
"Living out this spiritual fatherhood requires the radical discipline of being home. I find it impossible to love consistently without asking for something in return. But the discipline is precisely to give up wanting to accomplish this myself as a heroic feat. To claim for myself spiritual fatherhood, I have to let the rebellious younger son and the resentful elder son step up on the platform to receive the unconditional, forgiving love that the Father offers me, and to discover there the call to be home as my Father is home."
In his warm, vulnerable and profound way, Nouwen offers this book that can itself help us hear the voice of our Father calling us home. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
More basic than most readers need.......2007-06-08
I'll give it 1 star, only because a half isn't possible. From the author's description, you'd get the impression this is a book on individual technique and style. There's really not much of that. On page X (preface), he talks about how this book is not designed as a beginning photography book, but he seems to stick to a lot of basics throughout the book, for example page 30-31 discussed the strengths and weaknesses, pros and cons of digital SLR vs. point and shoot cameras. That alone is about as basic as it gets. I believe most anyone who is above 'beginning photography' level is fully aware how to use flash, knows that larger apertures are better in low light, and that a hard case is better for travel than a soft case, etc, etc. This book is overloaded with similar basic 'filler', like his explanation of what depth of field is on page 35. And I'm sorry, the 'secrets' of creating a successful wedding photography business aren't really secrets at all. It's just how he's done things, and reflects a few ways others have too. What this book has to offer is really just a partial printout of the vast resource of wedding photography information which is available for free on the internet through any search engine. There are far better books on this subject. Disappointingly, his one really has little to offer. Books like this, with a description like his lure uneducated, unexperienced camera owners into believing they can get out there and offer services that go shoulder to shoulder with the experienced pros. With 30 years experience in the trade of wedding and portrait photography, I can assure you that the required education and training aren't encapsulated in books like this. Wanna learn quick? Save your money. Work as an assistant for an established, experienced professional. You'll learn more in just a few weddings than a book like this offers. Pretty cover, though...
Awesome!.......2007-06-06
This is absolutely the best book I have ever seen on digital wedding photography. It covers anything and everything you'd want to know. It's written in easy-to-understand wording and the illustrations are beautiful. I highly recommend this book. You'll be delighted with it. I am so glad I bought it. It's worth every penny I paid for it...and more! I can't rave enough about it. It is awesome!
A must read book for wedding photographers .......2007-05-28
One of the most practical, comprehensive and truely useful book written for wedding photographers. A must read if you plan to shoot wedding as a career,part-time or as a hobby.
Nails It........2007-05-23
After a numerous wedding photography books...i finally found a good one that stays on my desk...instead of the bookshelve. Other wedding photography books have so much fill its unbelievable. I know what aperture and shutter speed is already, no need to tell me and no need to spend chapters on it!!! I'm gald this one dives right in. If you are a beginner...then maybe this book is a little too fast paced for you. Well written and the illustrations are good. Also has good tips that i haven't seen in the others wedding books. Real solid reading and advises. Of the 8-9 wedding books i own...this one ranks 1st or 2nd. Good Job Mr. Johnson!
Awesome.......2007-05-13
This is a fabulous book for anyone who is enjoys photography. It is a comprehensive step by step on how to get the right shot, using the right lens, down to how to pack for destination weddings. I would recommend this book to anyone in photography.
