5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2007-05-24

I was introduced to the Passport series while studying for my Network+ exam. Since then I have used the Passport series for 70-270, 70-290 and 70-218, all tests were passed with flying colors. I purchased numerous other books but always come back to the Passport series. Couldn't pass a test without them.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent review for the Network+ exam.......2007-03-05

This book does what it is meant to do ... that is prepare you to take the CompTIA Network+ exam. It is not the text to learn everything you want to know about networking. There are other books that are much thicker and more comprehensive that will do that for you. As with the other Mike Meyers books, this is the "Reader's Digest" or "Cliff notes" version of the material. It is the last book you read before taking the exam. It pulls the material together very well, is excellently organized and easy to study. The self test on CD the best available and maps extremely well with the real test. After using Mike Meyers, the exam was a slam dunk.

4 out of 5 stars Easy read.......2006-01-03

I used the Passport series books when preparing for A+, Network+, Security+ and Server+ and passed them all. I would recommend using this book along with another bigger textbook and some free online study guides. (Check out MCMCSE.com)

The one thing I like about this series is that it's very easy to read and will help you to understand things. If you have a backround in IT, then this is the book for you when preparing, but if your new and don't have much experience, some things might not make sense because things arn't explained in much detail.

5 out of 5 stars This book will definately help you pass Network+........2005-12-02

I bought this book last month, read the whole thing in less than two weeks, and today, passed the Network+ exam with a 749 (the minimum passing score is 554). I highly recommend this book to anyone considering taking this exam.

Building Storage Networks offers an excellent introduction to the burgeoning field of storage networks.

A few years ago, someone pulled me aside, looked me in the eye, and informed me that the future was storage. I felt like young Ben Braddock in The Graduate, being told the future was plastics. While the average IT engineer isn't dealing with Mrs. Robinson, he or she does need to manage a staggering amount of data.

Storage devices have been around as long as computers. From cassettes or tape drives to multigigabyte hard drives, the growth of storage has gone hand in hand with the growth of computers, and storage capacity has risen dramatically. Even 10 years ago, industry professionals touted the phrase "disk is cheap," effectively writing off storage as a commodity--and this was when hard drives were 120MB or less. During the last decade, continuing improvements in storage technology coincided with the explosion of the Internet, creating a huge demand for reliable, large-scale storage systems. Most businesses have recognized that data is a critical part of their IT systems, what author Marc Farley calls an "independent asset," equal in stature to applications and other system software.

Building Storage Networks gives information professionals the basic skills to understand modern storage technologies. The author argues that the common storage types SAN (Storage Area Network) and NAS (Network Attached Storage) are two different manifestations of a common set of principles, which all professionals should understand no matter which solution they implement.

After an in-depth discussion of his three key storage concepts--wiring, storing, and filing--Farley fleshes out the role of storage in today's corporate networks. This includes the details of storage implementation, different cabling and communication options, backup management, and future developments (e.g., InfiniBand).

This book is easily accessible to intermediate readers familiar with basic networking topologies and computer terminology. A healthy number of illustrations are used to effectively communicate complex topics. At the end of each chapter is a comprehensive summary, followed by several exercises, allowing the reader to fully grasp various storage concepts before proceeding.

Building Storage Networks can be used as an entry point for those wishing to learn about modern storage technologies, or as a reference for IT professionals already knee-deep in storage networks. However, almost all storage issues are considered in the abstract, without explicit reference to a particular vendor's hardware. Although an occasional reference is made to a specific product, the author sets out to educate the reader on storage issues, not to replace the manual for a particular piece of storage hardware. --Pete Ostenson

Book Description

Praise for the first edition of Building Storage Networks: "This book is the Bible of storage networking" --Dave Hill, Senior Storage Analyst, the Aberdeen Group Now more than ever, especially in the age of e-commerce, data must be available and accessible 24x7 on a network. This easy-to-understand book clearly explains all the latest methods of storing data on a network, including updated coverage of Internet storage service providers.

1 out of 5 stars Another rush job..........2001-11-26

It seems like too many technical books, especially those that
cover leading hot topics are rush rush rushed... This is
another one.

The book is full of errors, omitions, redundant verbiage,
dis-organized presentations etc. Overall the book has the
feeling of one of those heavy PC/Windows "throw-away", books
that you see street vendors sell for $1-2 a book after awhile.

Although there are valid and pertinent points in the book, I
found it very troubling to read as you never know what is
verifibly correct and what could be just another mistake or
error ! (Nothing like spending your time learning someone
else's mistakes...)

This level of quality is particularly galling considering
that this is supposidly a "second edition". Perhaps it's
no surprise that there is no information on how to reach
the author. If he did then maybe the suckered masses could
have written him email pointing out all the problems, something
the editor should have done but obviously not in this case.

Advice: wait for the 3rd or 4th "edition", the "second edition"
should have been called a draft...

3 out of 5 stars Very Complete Reference Book. More than need be........2001-01-06

Building Storage Networks is a very complete reference into storage. This book covers it all. If you know nothing about storage, by the time you get through the 590 pages you will have a complete knowledge of storage.

The 'Blueprint' section is somewhat confusing, especially if you are not storage savvy. I have been building storage systems for several years now and had to read the blueprints several times to fully understand them. They could have been done better.

Overall the book is good reference material, but it was not what I was expecting. To me, it appears the author started out with good intentions, but could not decide what 'extra' information could/should be left out. He could have just summarized some topics. There are numerous books on RAID, SCSI, etc that the author should have just referenced at the end of each chapter. This would have cut the size of book down considerably.

3 out of 5 stars SAN and NAS Beginnings.......2000-10-10

Nicely written material for the beginner to the SAN and NAS areas, but ultimately falls short of the depth that I was looking for in understanding SAN and NAS technologies. Covers the networking, protocols, and basic SAN and NAS architectures well. If you have a fairly good idea of the SAN and NAS solutions available today, than this book doesn't provide anything you haven't already been exposed. If your looking for a book that explains how and where SAN and NAS solutions might fit into your organization, than this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars A must read if you have to deal with storage issues.......2000-05-04

While there is a lot of industry hype abouts SANs, NAS and related technology, there is little hard information. Mr. Farley's book cuts through the marketing dross and gives a reader the "skinny" on what's real, what's possible, and what you need to do now to control storage in the future. If this isn't the Bible of the storage industry, it's at least the New Testament.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Storage Architecture.......2000-04-05

This is the first book I've seen that addresses the topic of modern storage in a manner that allows both the layperson and the skilled professional to understand the issues involved. The key word here is BUILDING, the first word in the book's title.

Storage has long been an important topic, but it used to be adequate to depict a storage subsystem as simply a series of boxes attached to a host computer. "Subsystem" is now an antiquated term when it comes to describing modern storage systems. The term "network" is often more apropos, and this book delves into what it takes to create such a network.

What is so valuable about this book is that it provides both an overview of various storage topics (disk partitioning, RAID, Storage Area Networks, Network Attached Storage, SCSI, Fibre Channel, caching, etc., etc.) as well as in-depth discussion of the kinds of issues that system architects must address to effectively create a modern storage network.

The modern age of storage involves many more complex issues to insure that storage does not become an overall system bottleneck. Mr. Farley's book is an essential guide to allow system architects to effectively create high-bandwidth systems, whether they be for today's internet applications, for intranets, for enterprise systems or for workgroups.

While early directory standards (such as X.500) offer some cross-platform functionality, none has the flexibility and widespread appeal of Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), which is fast becoming a standard part of networked computers. In Understanding and Deploying LDAP Directory Services, three experienced engineers share their knowledge of LDAP in theory and practice, effectively defining this fast-emerging technology. If you're planning to work with LDAP in any way--whether as a network manager, a software developer, or an information technology administrator--you need to read and pay attention to this book. It's the last word on LDAP as it stands today.

Since directory services aren't widely understood, this book begins by defining them and explaining what they can do for an organization. The guide then gets into the specifics of how LDAP organizes directories and handles queries. The authors go to great lengths to talk about what information to put in directories, how to validate and maintain it, and how to manage access to it. There's also lots of material on initiating LDAP services and on troubleshooting.

The aft part of this book holds special appeal for software developers, since it talks extensively about how to implement LDAP in both new and existing software. Throughout, the authors pay special attention to data redundancy, security, privacy, and the economic issues involved in an LDAP deployment. The book's real-world focus is cemented by case studies (both historical and semifictional). --David Wall

Book Description

This comprehensive tutorial provides the reader with a thorough treatment of LDAP directory services. Minimal knowledge of general networking and administration is assumed, making the material accessible to intermediate and advanced readers alike. Designed to meet multiple needs, the first part of the book presents a general overview of the subject matter, and the next three sections cover detailed instructions for design, deployment, and integration of directory services. The text is full of practical implementation advice and real-world deployment examples to help the reader choose the path that makes the most sense for the specific organization.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book.......2007-06-08

It is a very good book for those who want to understand and use LDAP. I bought it after I have read it from a friend.

5 out of 5 stars A 'must' for learning LDAP .......2005-09-10

Very clear and simple introduction followed by all the interesting
informations both the LDAP user and the LDAP administrator should know.

4 out of 5 stars A general overview of LDAP and deployment scenarios.......2004-03-10

Background:
LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) is a software protocol that enables locating organizations, individuals, and other resources such as files and devices in a network, whether it is a public Internet or a corporate Intranet.

As LDAP adoption and deployment is increasing, the expanded second edition of "Understanding and Deploying LDAP Directory Services" is published with more materials from the authors on the protocol and how to apply it effectively in different network environments.

Book Organization:
The book consists of twenty-six chapters divided into six major parts:
- Directory services overview and history
- Designing your directory service
- Deploying your directory service
- Maintaining your directory service
- Leveraging your directory service
- Case studies
The book begins by defining directory services and what they can offer for an organization then gets into the specifics of how LDAP organizes directories and handles queries with coverage of LDAPv3 extensions and the Netscape Directory Server.

The books then moves on to explore a wide range of topics such as designing directory services, naming, topology, replication, privacy, security deploying, directory services, implementation pitfalls, cost analysis, maintaining directory services, troubleshooting, and creating and enabling directory-service
applications.

The book offers help and advice for comparing "LDAP-compliant" products on features, management tools, reliability, performance, scalability, security, standards conformance, interoperability, cost, and other criteria. Then, having chosen a vendor, you'll walk through piloting your application
and testing it for performance, scalability, and reliability. Finally, the authors show how to put the system into production, keep it running smoothly and securely, provide for backups and disaster recovery, and make improvements over time.

The final section of the book presents four thorough deployment case studies, showing how diverse organizations can use LDAP as a simple, versatile solution for a wide variety of problems.

Is the book for you?
The book gives a good architect's or project manager's understanding of LDAP and of the difficulties inherent in deploying any complex mission critical software system.

For architects, this is a concept book rather than a reference book: After reading this book you will still need to refer to product manuals or reference books to help you figure out how to implement your design.

For a project manager, this book is valuable especially with the checklists, something that can be used to guide the deployment of many new systems.

Software developers would read the book to understand more on issues such as redundancy, security and privacy.

For IT professionals who are relatively new to the area, it is the book to read on LDAP.

General Comments:

- There are many specialized terms that are used without being defined or before being defined.

- There is a lot of superfluous material bringing the book to over 900+ pages requiring constant filtering on the part of the reader.

- The book offer more concepts that practical help. You will find a lot of managerial discussions, including talking to your users, piloting your directory and getting feedback. If you are looking to learn how to technically implement LDAP, these discussions will not interest you much.

- The book assumes that you have a good understanding of LDAP and Directory Services. The introduction chapters do not cover many basic concepts, many terms are not explained until used several dozen times, and there is no glossary.

- Managers will appreciate the sections on product selection, piloting an LDAP service, costing, disaster recovery, long-term maintenance, monitoring, and application development in a directory-centric world complete the picture.

- Several case studies are presented, including useful sidebars entitled "20/20 Hindsight".

The Good Stuff:
- Provides a lot of theoretical concepts
- Covers all aspects of LDAP deployment
- Discusses the design aspects of LDAP
- Designed to meet multiple needs
- Minimal knowledge of networking is assumed

The Not So Good Stuff:
- Not much on practical implementations
- Sometimes the explanations are too long
- With over 900 pages, the book is too long
- Sometimes hard to follow the line of thought
- A glossary of technical terms is not provided

Conclusion:

If you are planning to work with LDAP whether you are a network manager, a software developer, or an IT administrator, the book provides a lot of information which will help you define your directory requirements in detail and design a directory service that meets them. You will also ind the book valuable during the evaluation, planning and deployment process. However, if you are a programmer who is looking for a programming book or some kind of a product manual to help you setup LDAP services, this
is not the book for you. It is mostly targeted for architects as it is more of a concept book rather than a reference book.

In general, the text is full of advices and real-world deployment examples to help the readers choose the path that makes the most sense for their specific organization. I personally would recommend the book as a general
overview of LDAP and deployment scenarios.

1 out of 5 stars Response to gary Kessler.......2005-09-30

This is a response to Mr. Kessler's review. First, he needs to state that he has a biased interest in his review, that he used to work with Walter at Hill & Associates before he went to work for Juniper. Second, I was the reviewer for the first edition of the book and Walter had a lot of misconceptions about SONET in the original draft. So much so that my name is menitioned in the acknoweldgements in the first edition. Since I worked as a manager dealing with SONET at both AT&T as well as Cisco Systems, the book leaves a lot to be desired. He is very verbose in his writing style and has never worked in the field to give the reader a real understanding of the issues that come with understanding SONET - both services and equipment. There are other books in the field that do a better job - Andy Reid is a good one from the technical side for example - but this author needs to change his writing style and tone it down for this book to be considered for readership seriously.

2 out of 5 stars this is not your book if you want hardcore technical details.......2004-03-05

I can recommend this book to everyone who wants to get an overview on SDH/SONET capabilities and/or products but does not care for the protocol itself.

But if you're looking for a good and correct description of the inner workings of the protocol you'd better not waste your time with this book. Check out the SDH/SONET bible: Broadband Networking: ATM, SDH and SONET by Mike Sexton and Andy Reid. It's expensive, but it's really worth the money.

Goralski's book doesn't keep up with the promises of it's blurb. it has, like every book, some technical errors in it; errors which are IMHO worse enough not to buy this book. i wonder how this pointer-processing-example came into this book - horrors!

...

3 out of 5 stars Good Book To Start Sonet Studies.......2003-07-21

This is very good book for beginners, and for those who wants to understand Sonet basics, but still it very general and lacks from some shallowness.
So for designers and network operators it will be not so useful since it's not detailed enough.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy e-books..........2001-10-02

The content of the book, "SONET" is rather good: it covers history, architecture, equipment, lots of technical and implementation details. However, don't buy the e-book, consider the printed version. The rating really should be 0 stars, but 0 is not allowed...

The e-book version is difficult to read, and the reader is cantankerous, lacks ALL of the advantages of a printed book, and has NO electronic advantages: it's bound to the PC it's loaded to, and cannot be moved. If your PC crashes, you're cooked. Plus, you can't return it if you find it's not the right book for you. I'll never buy another e-book!

5 out of 5 stars An accurate, well-aimed work.......2001-07-02

As an author of technical books myself, I am always looking for titles that tell the story of a particular technology in a comprehensive, clearly-written and standards-oriented fashion. Walter Goralski's books do this and do it well. I own all of his titles, and the reason I like them (besides the author's sense of humor) is the fact that they are written around the standards that govern the telecommunications industry. Many companies interpret the standards and the terminology in different ways, which is fine - that's how they are designed. Unfortunately, this sometimes leads to differences of opinion about meanings or interpretations. Walter sticks to the standards, however, always ensuring the availability of a literary technological benchmark.

I strongly recommend the book.

The more I dive into the MCSE path the more I relize there is not one book that covers everything you need to know for the exam. This book does an excellent job of explaining the topics that it covers. That said it covers about 85% of what you need to know. Nearly 50% of the test was on RRAS.

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful Book - Avoid.......2005-08-03

I haven't taken the exam yet, so I can't comment on the appropriatness of the book to the exam, but my biggest gripe is the ridiculous number of errors in this book. Even with the official list of errata at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830785, I've lost count of the number of additional errors. If you do the exercises and think "why isn't this working?", you've hit yet another error. My advice: demand a refund immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2005-04-17

I bought this book over a year ago. Like many network admins, I have a huge library of reference material, but this is one of those books that I keep finding myself going back to. There are a lot of topics, such as Remote Access Policies, that are covered really clearly here but in no other book I've seen. The text also seems easier to read than most other similar books. Unlike another reviewer here, I haven't found many errors at all in the text (aside from one page with typos -- 5 octet IP addresses??). Some of the labs are also pretty interesting, especially the ones that use netsh commands. I'm not saying the book is perfect but I believe if you buy this book as a reference you will find yourself using it repeatedly, as I have.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for 70-291.......2005-02-19

This is a good book, I'm going to keep it on my bookshelf and I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. If you understand everything in this book you will pass the exam! The book does not cover SUS and ISA server, you will be tested on one of these two topics. The CDRom exams are buggy in 2 ways. The first is that sometimes I couldn't get the Exhibits to display....fustrating. The second is that some of the questions are very vague and you can't understand what they are asking for. The Microsoft test will be more specific. However, I do suggest taking the CDRom exams and then make sure you understand why you got the questions wrong, you will be able to find the Technet references when you review the results of the test. If you are a Windowz/Networking beginner you may have issues with the 70-291 test due to the concepts needed, this comes with experience. The book -will- give you the info you need. I'll be reviewing the 70-293 book in a few minutes.

    Book Description

The skills and guidance needed to master RTL hardware design

This book teaches readers how to systematically design efficient, portable, and scalable Register Transfer Level (RTL) digital circuits using the VHDL hardware description language and synthesis software. Focusing on the module-level design, which is composed of functional units, routing circuit, and storage, the book illustrates the relationship between the VHDL constructs and the underlying hardware components, and shows how to develop codes that faithfully reflect the module-level design and can be synthesized into efficient gate-level implementation.

Several unique features distinguish the book:
    * Coding style that shows a clear relationship between VHDL constructs and hardware components
    * Conceptual diagrams that illustrate the realization of VHDL codes
    * Emphasis on the code reuse
    * Practical examples that demonstrate and reinforce design concepts, procedures, and techniques
    * Two chapters on realizing sequential algorithms in hardware
    * Two chapters on scalable and parameterized designs and coding
    * One chapter covering the synchronization and interface between multiple clock domains

Although the focus of the book is RTL synthesis, it also examines the synthesis task from the perspective of the overall development process. Readers learn good design practices and guidelines to ensure that an RTL design can accommodate future simulation, verification, and testing needs, and can be easily incorporated into a larger system or reused. Discussion is independent of technology and can be applied to both ASIC and FPGA devices.

With a balanced presentation of fundamentals and practical examples, this is an excellent textbook for upper-level undergraduate or graduate courses in advanced digital logic. Engineers who need to make effective use of today's synthesis software and FPGA devices should also refer to this book.

    1 out of 5 stars Nice doorstop..........2003-05-01

I bought this book about a year ago after reading the reviews on here. It's a big book, people sing praises of it, as you flip through the pages it definitely has some good stuff. I'm trying to use it as a reference I refer to every month or two when I'm working on relatively basic stuff...verifying a NAT setup on a router, maybe looking on how to setup rate limiting. I pick up this book, flip to the anemic index to find next to nothing on whatever topic I'm looking for. Maybe if I had time to sit down and become more familiar with this book it might be useful, but personally I find O'Reillys Cisco IOS in a Nutshell waaaay more useful.

5 out of 5 stars Buy It! Invaluable Resource.......2002-04-16

I have had this book on my desktop for several months now. It has time and time again proved to be an invaluable resource. There isn't much in the way of switching, but then again, this is a "Router Handbook." This book even goes into details on networking leagcy systems, a rare find right there. It covers design and implementation of classles and classful routing protocols as well as DDR, making it a good resource on your CCNA and CCNP routing exams. It also covers in detail different router's specs, which was vaulable while studying for the CIT and BCRAN exams. At the price this is selling for used, it seems almost criminal. I am a CCNA and CCNP and still find myself pulling this book off the shelf every other week for reference. BUY IT.

4 out of 5 stars cisco router inside out.......2001-08-04

this is the only reference book you need for cisco router

the book has the design and configuration of RIP I and RIP II, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF and BGP. Also included are chapters on frame relay, and ATM design as well as DSL and voice, ISDN, DDR and VPN

Of particular interest were the coverage of security and firewalls as well as voice configuration.

All in all, the book is more than a reference tool for cisco router technologies. A little hitch though, is the typographical and grammatical errors.

    A GOOD BOOK

5 out of 5 stars Sackett's second effort is worth taking a look at........2000-12-29

George Sackett has updated his Router Handbook and his latest effort is worth taking a look at as he has made corrections and updates to the latest technologies. Sackett has taken Cisco Routing to a new level this book should make a handy reference to have on hand.

Sackett starts his 985-page book off with Cisco Software versions 11 and 12, which is good for almost every router technician. His next topic is network design and his breakdown is informative and detailed.

There are sections for the following topics, RIP I and RIP II, which is a change from the previous edition, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF and BGP. Also included are section for frame relay, and ATM design as well as DSL and voice, ISDN, DDR and VPN all new with this edition.

Finally you have coverage of security and firewalls and chapters on the configuration of RIP, IGRP, EIGRP, OSPF and BGP. Sackett's books is more than hardware as evidenced with chapters covering the design of networks using ATM, Frame Relay, DSL, Novell, Voice, and VPN.

Don't let the price tag sway your decision; this is well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars My personal Cisco Reference book!.......2000-08-20

What separates Cisco Routers from the rest? What makes Cisco Certifications one of most sought after certifications in the computer industry? Where can you find a reference manual for Cisco that covers more than just one certification topic? Try Cisco Router Handbook.

What amazed me about this book was amount of information included. Also the author's ability for detailed information is another huge plus to buying this book. Sackett makes sure that every topic is covered completely and the information is not accurate but up to date.

Starting off with the IOS software and then moving into router hardware. The router hardware section covers most if not all of the Cisco line. Next you have network design and IP routing design, both sections are very well laid out and the information is easy to follow.

With other sections on Frame Relay, ATM, switch networks, SRB, APPN, ISDN and DDR design rounding out the field. You have the author giving you chapters devoted to the IP, RIP, IGRP, EIRGP, OSPF and BGP Routing Protocols, more than any other book I have seen so far.

Finally there are section on Novell and IPX, route distribution and legacy systems which when you boil it all down covers CCNA to CCIE exams all in 900 pages. While the cost is around $70.00 your money is well spent for possible the one reference book that every Cisco technician should have with them.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT CCNA PREP.......2007-03-10

I read the cisco press books (INTRO and ICND), the Sybex book (CCNA 801 5th ed) and this book. I would say that this book was the best one out of all of them. It may not be as in depth on some parts as the others BUT it is ALL you need for the exam. The only big draw back was that a lot of features on the CD dont seem to work.

3 out of 5 stars for the beginner.......2007-02-10

this book covers a bit too much for the seasoned network tech looking to study up for an exam. My advice save your money and get test king.

5 out of 5 stars Great all in one book.......2007-02-09

I used this book to pass the CCNA exam several months ago but never wrote a review on it... so here we go

A lot of people said you need multiple sources to study for this exam, but I only needed to use this book (along with testing simulator material). I don't really understand why you would need multiple books. This book covers everything that was on the exam (including stuff that won't be included, like the 1900 switch information). Nothing was on the test that wasn't in this book.

I did have experience with cisco routers, but it was limited to certain technologies and a limited set of commands. The book did a fine job of filling in all the blanks.

Each chapter is very clear, and the reading was very straightforward. There was very little "fluff" or "bs". It was to the point and concise.

The chapters build upon each other relatively well, and the order of the chapters are probably the best way to go about learning the material.

The only part of the book I found poorly worded was the frame relay section, where it went of non broadcast multiple access. It did a poor job of defining what NBMA actually was and what it meant. A quick web search cleared up my confusion though.

Probably the best aspect of this book would be that it bothers to explain the technologies in an easily understood manner. Things like PPP, CHAP, ISDN, RIP, OSPF are all made very clear. They are potentially very confusing if not explained correctly, but the book did a great job of adding unnecessary confusion.

    CONS:
The Boson simulator on the CD did not install... I also hear it has limited functionality.

The test questions aren't going to prepare you for the actual exam. I reccommend that you use something that tests you with multiple choice questions and simulator questions.

I used the commercial version of Boson software to study for this test, and it did a reasonable job of prepping for the exam. I also used some other testing material to test the knoweledge I had (multiple choice). Nothing I was asked wasn't covered in the book, but I found I had to go back to gather a better understanding of the reading.

Its very crucial that you are able to perform configurations on an actual router (via a real router or testing simulator). The simulator questions on the exam carry a lot of weight.

    ABOUT THE TEST:

The CCNA test itself was in a somewhat unusual format. Make sure you read the material issued before the test starts on how to use the interface of the simulator questions.. The interface is a little unusual. You also can't go back, and the test is adaptive.

I believe that I had aced most of the multiple choice questions easily due to the knoweledge acquired in this book. I also felt like I had nailed the simulator questions, however I think the CCNA test mightve been a bit buggy with the simulator.

I'm not sure how the simulator is graded, but my biggest frustration was that the simulator questions want you to do things a specific way. It will also limit the functions provided to you in order to do the problem. I'm not sure it took points off every time I tried to use an incorrect technique, but even though I passed I am quite certain my score was lower than it should've been (considering my final answers were apparently correct - there was not a thing on the test I wasn't VERY familiar with). I am pretty cetain this relates to some quirks I noticed with the simulator.

Some quirks/bugs I noticed with the simulators:

    1) Sometimes pings went through to both ends, even though they weren't completely configured (this shouldnt of happened!). This may give you the impression that you are done, even though it may require more work from you.

    2) It was very unclear as to what exactly was required of you in some simulator questions. Instructions like "fix the errors in this network" are so non-specific that it may drive you crazy. In one question I was able to make it so that everything pinged everything else after just one correction. It left you wondering "is that it? Is there something else?". Maybe they wanted me to implement it a different way, instead of making it work that way? Maybe it was pinging despite an incomplete config (see above)?

    3) I forgot to save my configuration after two of the three simulator question. I have heard that they do not deduct you for this, but I think it may have taken credit off for this.

To avoid such problems I'd suggest that people thoroughly examine the questions and take a look at possible solutions before implementing them. I think that the simulator may be too buggy to understand applying and removing configurations multiple times. You also want to make sure you have everything covered, and do not rely on the pinging mechanism (its a nice check, but may be faulty from my experience).

So in conclusion, this book will greatly help with the multiple choice questions. If you go through the entire book, and truly take the time to understand it all (know the commands down cold, along with the features of all routing protocols), you will do well.

4 out of 5 stars A well written leaning tool that needs updating.......2006-04-16

Positives: It's written in an easy-to-read style that won't have you sleeping (too quickly!) It's got summary "Exam watch" blocks every few pages to summarize what you should know. It's got videos on a CD (I know, don't roll your eyes yet) that are actually helpful. Most videos that come with computer training books that I've seen are a joke. These are different: you hear the author talking while you see the actual router / switch screen while he types IOS commands and tells you what's going on. This is a GREAT intermediate step between reading about IOS commands and trying them yourself on a device or simulator. These alone are worth the price of the book. The labs provided go well with the Boson NetSim LE simulation software provided.
Negatives: This book has become outdated. Cisco keeps the test oriented towards relatively recent technologies so any book is shooting at a moving target. This could be rectified with a webpage that could have updates (the Cisco Press books do have an appendix that tells about test updates AND its latest copy is on their web site.) For example, I didn't learn until quite late that the amount of time spent studying pages devoted to the 1900 switch commands (which are often different than every other switch!) was pointless. The Cisco Press ICND book relegates this old technology to an appendix for only "for those of you who want to be super-prepared." Also, some of the videos & labs were unrealistic. For example, the NAT/PAT labs show private IP addresses used on both sides of NAT instead of actual internet IPs. PAT's ability to provide multiple private IPs to access the Net is the REAL reason for this technologies importance so let's make the lab relevant.

This book was required for use in a class I took at a local community college. I'm not sorry I purchased it. As others have pointed out, you'll probably want multiple materials as study resources. Having just passed the CCNA, I'd suggest, however, that your first source be the Cisco INTRO / ICND book set.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!! The lights are on!!.......2006-04-15

I bought this book after a frustrating day spent trying to learn subnetting. I started with that subject, and the lights in my mind went on within 10 minutes of reading and working out the examples. I actually understood subnetting. Amazing! From my brief encounter with this book, I have to agree with other reviewers. This book is excellent. The explanations are thorough, yet easy to follow. The examples are crystal clear. The layout of the self-test at the end of the chapter helps you know exactly where to go back to review. The Two-Minute Drill at the end of the chapter is way better than the summaries provided in other books. I am happy I bought this book.

    Book Description

If you're preparing for the new CompTIA 2006 certification in A+, or the current Network+ and Security+ certifications, you'll find this book invaluable. It provides all the information you need to get ready for these exams, including the four new A+ exams -- the required Essentials exam and three elective exams that pertain to your area of specialization.

As with other O'Reilly Nutshell books for certification exams, A+, Network+ and Security + in a Nutshell follows a proven style and approach. It reviews all of the topics needed to master each exam in a remarkably concise format, with required knowledge boiled down to the core. Instead of plowing through 500 to 700 pages to prepare for each exam, this book covers each one in approximately 150 pages. And because the objectives for the three elective A+ exams are redundant, and the book covers them in one section.

    The exams covered include:

Each exam is covered in three parts: Exam Overview, Study Guide and Prep and Practice. Plenty of detailed tables and screen shots are included, along with study notes and practice questions. Once you have completed the exams successfully, you will find this all-in-one book to be a valuable reference to core administration and security skills.

    Book Description

An in-depth examination of the core concepts and general principles of Web application development.
This book uses examples from specific technologies (e.g., servlet API or XSL), without promoting or endorsing particular platforms or APIs. Such knowledge is critical when designing and debugging complex systems. This conceptual understanding makes it easier to learn new APIs that arise in the rapidly changing Internet environment.
    * Includes discussions of markup languages: HTML, the eXtensible Markup Language (XML), XHTML, eXtensible Stylesheet Language (XSL), and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
    * Contains exercises geared to constructing an advanced XML application that makes use of XML and XSL parsers
    * Explores emerging technologies: Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), industry-specific XML standards, Resource Description Framework (RDF), and XML query languages

5 out of 5 stars Great Crossover Book.......2005-09-02

I've been writing Windows-based mutlimedia applications since Windows 95 was released. I've been looking for a good book to help the crossover to web application development, and I found that this was just the ticket. Explanations were solid and presented in a way that made experimentation easy (both from the browser and server side). Quite simply, this book served as a great jumping off point for deeper exploration into session management, security, web services (both SOAP and Rest), etc. Definitely a great introduction for folks with a software engineering background.

    5 out of 5 stars good summary.......2004-08-13

I always thought Amazon search is good but I stumbled upon this book at a store. It's a useful summary, but not a reference. I particularly like the examples and the way they build up from trivial to complex. The level of detail is right. Altogether, very refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars Takes intermediate developers to the next level.......2004-06-16

This book is an ideal text for providing intermediate-level web developers with a solid grounding in architectural principles and more advanced techniques. Before going into why I like this book I do want to offer one caveat - the authors' approach is towards the Model-View-Controller paradigm, and is based on Java Standard Tag Library, Jarkata struts and Apache. These are solid elements, but if you are working in a different environment you will not appreciate this book as much.

The historical material in this book is not fluff if you approach it with the intent to gain a fuller understanding of the major components of the Internet and web. This material is rich with details about why the core web technologies developed and evolved, including design choices the pioneers made in the face of constraints. In a subtle way this part of the book is a primer on design and architecture.

What makes this book so valuable is the non-trivial application that brings this book alive. This is a refreshing change from other books that use thinly contrived snippets of code or trivial applications. The code for this application can be downloaded from the book's supporting web site, which also contains errata (thus far there are only two entries), and articles that are valuable resources with or without this book.

Overall this is one of the better books on web application design and development, and one that dives into code and technical details.

    5 out of 5 stars I like this book.......2004-02-02

I am not an expert developer but I have a fair amount of experience building financial applications in Java and C++. I spent quite some time looking for a book that would get me started with Web technologies. It is not easy. Yes, there are many books that describe one or another technology but I wanted to find one that puts these technologies in prospective. I was very pleased when I found this book. I can always dig deeper in one direction when I need to but this book helps me to understand how to get started and where to concentrate my efforts. I like it, I think it is very useful.

5 out of 5 stars Historical perspective + technical detail = useful book.......2004-01-22

I have to disagree with the reviewer who disparaged this book's emphasis on history. The background on TCP/IP protocols explained how HTTP came to be and why servers and browsers work the way they do. Discussion of how web development platforms evolved provided insight into the problems newer approaches tried to solve and the problems some of them created. The authors may have gone overboard spouting the merits of "separating content from presentation" and touting the praises of MVC approaches, but their point is a valid one you can really relate to if you've worked with page-centric platforms like ASP and JSP. The historical review of different approaches explained the authors' reasons for ultimately choosing an MVC approach with Struts and JSTL, and offered insights into how development platforms may evolve in the future. This is a book that starts with basics and builds on them, covering protocols, markup languages, and development platforms. The history helps drive the points home. Personally, I learned a lot from this book. I agree that they could have provided a CD-ROM, but it turns out their website (webappbuilders.com) is pretty good and has other good info aside from the app's source code, including some articles from the authors.
