4 out of 5 stars $69.99 buys you depth.......2007-05-29

As of May 28 2007, if you are going to fork some money onto a WiMax book, this book should be it. The authors were smart to concentrate in explaining the technology building blocks of the standard instead of just following the structure of the 802.16 document. I have read mostly the chapters related to the PHY and I found the explanations and examples clear and to the point. Even if you are not interested in the WiMax standard per se, this book contains very good information about OFDM/OFDMA and multi-antenna techniques for broadband wireless systems. It also has a couple of chapters about link level and system level performance of WiMax that add even more depth to the book.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall introduction to IEEE 802.16 technology.......2007-05-26

For those looking for an overview of IEEE 802.16 technology, or for those looking to come up to speed after a period of absence such as me, this is a good book.

4 out of 5 stars an engineer's book.......2007-05-15

Andrews suggests in the Preface that the book will be suited to a wide range of people who want to learn about WiMax. From engineers to graduate students to managers and executives and others. Indeed, there are high level descriptions, scattered throughout the chapters, accessible to those without an engineering degree. But typically, these are introductory summary remarks. The bulk of every chapter is really best understood if you have that engineering background. While the author naturally desires as wide an audience as possible, this is really an engineer's book.

The overviews do show that WiMax exhibits strong advantages over the current and popular WiFi. Like having robust security protocols, including the Advanced Encryption Standard (aka Rijndael) and 3DES. Plus WiMax has terminals that possess built-in digital certificates with public and private keys and MAC addresses. Contrast this with WiFi, whose commonly used Wireless Encryption Protocol has some severe deficiencies.

Another important advantage of WiMax is how it supports extreme mobility modalities. Where you, the end user, can travel in a vehicle up to 120 kmph, and have seamless handoff between WiMax basestations.

Many chapters are highly mathematical. Indeed, one chapter on multi-antennas reads like an excursion into advanced linear algebra or matrix theory. It even evokes the Frobenius norm of a matrix, which I'd only ever seen before in a pure maths course.

Of all the chapters, maybe that which discusses Mobile IP could be the most interesting. It takes the Internet as we know it, and removes a serious current limitation to moving your machine, and having it keep connected to the Internet. Mobile IP is a cunning overlay on IPv4. While it can also be done, and much easier, in IPv6. The only problem is when the latter will start to dominate v4.

Overall, the book is a very promising pitch for WiMax deployment.

2 out of 5 stars Not a complete study guide for the PW0-100 exam.......2007-02-21

I liked this book but as the CWNA study guide it falls short of expectations. The PoE coverage was almost entirely lacking and there were many other areas that did not fully cover the exam question areas. I wrote CWNP and received a lame excuse as to why it was not complete and to disregard the claim printed on the cover that it provided "Complete coverage of the CWNA exam objectives". They said the exam has gone through considerable changes since the book's publication and thus does not match in many areas anymore. I suggested an on-line suppliment to cover the changes and they said that was not necessary, I should research the changes myself. As the exam study guide it deserves 2 stars, as a general guide to wireless networking it deserves at least 3 or 4 though obviously it is getting dated.

5 out of 5 stars CWNA Certified Wireless Network Administrator Official Study Guide (Exam PW0-100), Third Edition (Planet3 Wireless).......2007-01-10

CWNA is a newish International Certification in ICT. I have been working with International Certification in ICT for a long time, and I have read many books.

This book cuts to the chase succinctly and very well. In a reasonably newish field (Wireless Networking), I have yet to find a publication as well organised as this one.

The book is useful for many things -- a reference, a text book or a study book. A great effort, and I hope there will be more to come

5 out of 5 stars Only book you need to pass CWNA test.......2006-09-22

This is the one of the best technical books I've read. Clear and detailed explanations, easy to read, 'not dry' - it gives you what you need to pass CWNA and more. You will return to this book every now and then in need for good explanation of wireless foundation (RF math, surveying, security, standards...). When studying, I ALWAYS use Internet as an aid in preparing for exams, and I did this time, too. It helps to read another author's lines to deepen your knowledge, or just to find another examples of the subject. Don't get me wrong: this book really IS your only study guide, but it is worth to take few steps more to be sure you do well on the test (after all, it's your money). It is important to visit CWNP's web page at www.cwnp.com for current errata. I used this book as preparation for CWNA exam and passed it with over 90%. But don't think CWNA is easy: prepare well, pay attention to details (!), be sure you REALLY understand what your are reading, take your time to prepare, and good luck!

4 out of 5 stars Good Study Guide - Practice exam not included.......2006-06-22

The book covers all the topics and is a complete study guide but it does not include any practice test for the exam.

5 out of 5 stars Pleased .......2006-03-17

The book was an eye-opener for me and I now know a lot more about 802.11 standarads...written in plain english, it is easy to comprehend...The author does not compromise on the depth of information...I would recommend focussing on chapters 6-13 in order to clear the exam..

5 out of 5 stars Wireless Frenzy.......2006-08-23

As a professional consultant, increasingly I have to deal with wireless networks. This book provides for me the details about wireless networking, all at my fingertips.
No, it's not a complete guide on how to setup and install a wireless network, but it's not supposed to be. A book like that would be out of date before it went to print! Rather, this book lays out the necessary information for integrating wireless platforms into corporate and business enterprise--securely! It's all about the tools to use and what job to use them for. Knowing the right tool for the right job is half of what this book is about. The other half is about scenarios and procedures and security and the theory behind the technology. Everything you need to know whether you are involved in corporate firewalling of wireless networks, security, integration, etc. This book is a must-read for anyone involved in network architecture and planning.

5 out of 5 stars Timely book- must read for IT professionals.......2006-08-15

I couldn't put the book down. Vacca's Guide to Wireless Network Security is the one-stop-shopping reference to everything you need to know about the security impacts associated with wireless technology. Just back from a roadtrip across the US, I was astonished to find almost every motel/hotel now equipped with wireless access. Upon use, I would always wonder about their implementations regarding the *real* protection of my data exchanges. This book has educated me and frankly has scared me quite a bit. IT professionals, this is a terrific read. Highly readable and highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Wireless Network Security.......2006-08-06

As more mission-critical network applications become wireless, network security professionals need a constant eye on security and awareness of vulnerabilities. John Vacca's book is a must for the network security expert as well as the lay person establishing wireless connectivity at home.

Among network designers and administrators, wired Ethernet is a known quantity. Plenty is known about how to build good twisted-pair network infrastructures, how to keep them secure, and how to monitor their excess capacity. Not so for the wireless Ethernet networks (built around the IEEE 802.11x standards)--these hold much more mystery for even experienced network designers. 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide aims to codify the body of knowledge needed to design and maintain wireless local area networks (LANs). The authors succeed admirably in this, covering what installation and administration teams need to know and digging into information of use to driver writers and others working at lower levels.

The only significant detail that's been excluded has to do with security--a notorious weak point of 802.11x LANs. The authors cover the feeble but widely used Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) authentication protocol in detail and devote another whole chapter to 802.1x, which is an emerging authentication scheme based on Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP). The author has considerable skill in communicating information graphically and does a great job of using graphs to show how communications frequencies shift over time and how conversations among access points and network nodes progress over time. This is indeed an authoritative document. --David Wall

Topics covered: How IEEE 802.11a and 802.11b wireless networks (also known as WiFi networks) work, and how to configure your own. The framing specification is covered well, as are authentication protocols and (in detail) the physical phenomena that affect IEEE 802.11x radio transmissions. There's advice on how to design a wireless network topology, and how to go about network traffic analysis and performance improvement.

Book Description

As we all know by now, wireless networks offer many advantages over fixed (or wired) networks. Foremost on that list is mobility, since going wireless frees you from the tether of an Ethernet cable at a desk. But that's just the tip of the cable-free iceberg. Wireless networks are also more flexible, faster and easier for you to use, and more affordable to deploy and maintain. The de facto standard for wireless networking is the 802.11 protocol, which includes Wi-Fi (the wireless standard known as 802.11b) and its faster cousin, 802.11g. With easy-to-install 802.11 network hardware available everywhere you turn, the choice seems simple, and many people dive into wireless computing with less thought and planning than they'd give to a wired network. But it's wise to be familiar with both the capabilities and risks associated with the 802.11 protocols. And 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition is the perfect place to start. This updated edition covers everything you'll ever need to know about wireless technology. Designed with the system administrator or serious home user in mind, it's a no-nonsense guide for setting up 802.11 on Windows and Linux. Among the wide range of topics covered are discussions on: With wireless technology, the advantages to its users are indeed plentiful. Companies no longer have to deal with the hassle and expense of wiring buildings, and households with several computers can avoid fights over who's online. And now, with 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition, you can integrate wireless technology into your current infrastructure with the utmost confidence.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview .......2007-06-28

This is a great book to get started with 802.11 wireless networks. It gives a great overview and a decent amount of detail. For more detail I used open source available on the web, Linux drivers, and a book on 802.11i for more in depth knowledge on security.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but dated.......2007-05-13

This book is a very detailed and mostly thorough description of 802.11 wireless networking. The author clearly describes the protocols and how they are typically used, plus various wireless network topologies, and even information about deployment such as antenna types.

Where the book falls short is that it was clearly written before the growth in popularity of "wireless controllers" or "wireless switches", and the auther says almost nothing about them or how wireless networking works when using a wireless-controller-based network.

There also was not much information about wireless network management, although that might be beyond the scope of this book.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-04-15

I've been looking for a book that discusses 802.11 technical details but that is easier to follow than the standards themselves. I've been very happy with this book, as it has helped me find the answers I was looking for. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that I wish it had a few more sections that walked through sequences of actions (such as association and re-association). The information is there, but is sometimes scattered, so you have to pull together from different parts of the book and mentally reassemble. Othewise, it's very well written and I recommend it to anyone who needs a good working reference book for 802.11 operations.

1 out of 5 stars \_/\_/ .......2007-02-21

The books in not very complete in what it teaches you. It is fine for beginners, but does not meet the needs of advanced users.

4 out of 5 stars 802.11 Networks 2nd Edition. By Mathew S. Gast........2007-01-21

802.11 Wireless Networks 2nd Edition is the book for the serious administrator. You should already have solid understanding of TCP/IP protocols and have had some experience working with IEEE 802 networks. Network administrators who about to deploy or are managing 802.11 networks, the book is particularly for you.

The book goes over many details and examines many frame types. You won't find great explanations about what a specific topic is. Instead, Gast, explains how they work into the headers and sometimes just short of using mathematics. Some topics include: WEP, 802.1X, 802.11i, 802.11n MMIO-OFDM, Access Points, 802.11 Hardware, and even Framing in Detail.

Gast doesn't expect the book to be read chronologically and even recommends those in a hurry to go ahead and skip the first 16 chapters. Following that you're into the more practical stuff like installing wireless cards, designing and implementing a 802.11 network, security, and site planning and project management.

Mathew Gast understands wireless networks better than I know the back of my hand.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent; well written and thorough .......2007-06-14

I learned alot from this book. It provides you everything you need to know to get your home wireless network up and running. Excellent

2 out of 5 stars Poorly Written.......2007-06-10

Three Authors, one poorly written book; this is a scenario of too many cooks spoil the broth. Each Author shares their expertise but neither illustrates a solid foundation regarding the real how-to's of Wireless Home networks.

For starter the title of the book is Wireless Home Networking, this should have been the premises of the book; why so many chapters were spent on trivial topics like going wireless with your car, motorcycle, expensive home security camera setup and such topics is beyond me. Subsequently other topics went lacking, like networking configuration, workgroups and a full spectrum troubleshooting chapter.

I have a two desktop and one laptop PC wireless home installed prior to buying this work and believe me you can encounter far more issues in setup and trouble shooting than this book care to discuss.

The authors admittedly states on page 208 that workgroups are a common mistake that users make with setting up multiply PC networks, however, (beyond a few command prompts) offers little help on the topic. This book does provide some insight on wireless home network, however, there has to be better books on the subject. Finally, if you're buying the 2nd edition after 2005, this book is severely out-of-date.

5 out of 5 stars What a GREAT HELP!!!!!!.......2007-03-31

This book was great!!!! It made setting up a network so much easier than I thought it would be. I was so nervous before I got this book, just the thought of messing with something left me panicked and I wouldn't touch it to try. Very easy language to read and undertand, nothing techie about this book. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Provides actual info!.......2007-02-20

First off, I have to say I hate the name and this is the only "Dummies" book I have ever bought. When things are too difficult for people to use, it is the designer who is at fault, not the user.
There, I feel better.
After reading many reviews of many wireless network books at amazon, I bought this one. I had tried on a couple occasions to get a wireless network going at home without success. I had wireless internet, but could not share files or printers. There are maybe two pages of information in this book that revealed everything I needed to successfully advance from "internet only" to a real network. And I could easily find and understand the information! The book has much more info, as well, but I had already figured out the other settings and had other sources for the technical background info. I don't mean to belittle this with the "two page" comment, there are few "how to" books I have found that have more than that. I am very glad I bought it. Five stars if it did not have an insulting title.

5 out of 5 stars Well-written primer on wireless networking and connectivity........2006-09-02

This book explains all the networking buzzwords, compares many different types of networking (HPNA, HomePlug, Bluetooth, wired, wireless), and is organized in a way that allows you to read through or use it as a reference. Explains and compares the merits of different security protocols. The book was perfect for me, someone who is computer-literate but got left behind by the networking revolution.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Book Need to be improved and updated.......2005-04-14

I got and read this book, taking Cisco Wireless Lan course. I was excited first but was very disappointed for first 1-3 chapters, especially for the area covering various spread spectrum and modulation techniques for 802.11a and 802.11b, very poor work and very confusing. I recommend that an excellent and easy-to-read book such as "Guide to Designing and Implementing Wireless LANs" by Ciampa (2001, From Course Technology, or to wait for "CWNA Guide to Wireless LANs" Second Edition by Ciampa) on one extreme side, to other extreme side of a highly technical or scholarly book such as "Wireless Communications: Principles and Practice" (2nd Edition) by Rapport (Prentice Hall).

My second disappointment is the absence of 802.11g even considering its publication date and the flood of other vendor's 802.11g products in market (and for 802.16 Wi-Max, especially considering the price that I paid for this book and the reputation of CISCO).

I am somewhat happy with the rest of the book, done reasonably well, on the topics but hoped that it could be done much better.

5 out of 5 stars Cisco Networking Academy Program Fundamentals of Wireless LA.......2005-04-01

"Fundamentals of Wireless LANS", published by Cisco Press, is a most appropriate title. Having read other books that were intended to have a similar fundamental-in-nature content, "Fundamentals of Wireless LANS" definitely offers more detail. The number of pages alone - almost 800, excluding appendices - are an indication right away that this book will contain a sufficient amount of detail. The reference about the book being authorized for the Cisco Networking Academy Program is also appropriate. The book is definitely geared toward the use of Cisco wireless networking equipment.

The level of experience to fully comprehend the subject matter, and to perform the exercises throughout the book, are no more than that required of someone with CCNA-level knowledge. The focus of the book is on wireless networking equipment so, there a minimal references to traditional (wired) networking equipment. Also, the infrequent reference to wired networking equipment assumes that the reader understands the function(s) of this equipment, and again, this understanding is not beyond the level of CCNA knowledge.

The reader that will find this book most useful is someone who wants to develop a solid foundation in wireless LAN principles, and wants to gain that understanding from a Cisco-centric perspective. Also, anyone pursuing the Cisco Wireless LAN specialization certification will find this book as an excellent preparatory source.

There are examples that are illustrated in the chapters, along with examples on a CD-ROM that is included with the book. The examples throughout the chapters are extremely easy to follow; so easy, that each concept can fully comprehended without the use of any actual equipment. Of course, if the reader does have access to the actual equipment (or software utility) that are referenced in the examples, that will only serve to enhance the learning. Each illustration is well thought out, that makes it very easy for someone with good self-study skills to follow. Each chapter concludes with a list of the "key terms" restate where the focus was placed. Also, to challenge and test the comprehension of the material in the chapter, there are 10 questions that serve to reinforce the subject matter. Some chapters also contain URLs to Cisco websites that offer additional materials on the equipment or subject being discussed.

The CD-ROM that is included with the book is awesome. The CD-ROM is comprised of the following components: 1)Test Engine, 2)Photo Zooms, 3)Interactive Activities, 4)Demo Activities, and 5)references to other Cisco-related WLAN resources. The "References" to other Cisco-related WLAN resources include some tools and utilities that are right on the CD-ROM.

The Test Engine on the CD-ROM is consists of 2 components: 1) Study Mode, and 2) Practice Exam. The Study Mode component contains 296 questions, and the Practice Exam includes 70 questions. The questions cover concepts presented in all 12 chapters of the book. The Study Mode allows the reader to customize the number of questions to be tested, the chapters from which the questions will come from, and the time period (number of minutes) that is allowed to answer questions.

The PhotoZooms provide photographs of the Cisco WLAN equipment that is referenced throughout the book. These photographs give a lot of credence to the cliché - a picture is worth a thousand words. Being able to the equipment that is referenced throughout the book is invaluable. Also, along with each equipment photo is a description of the equipment.

The Interactive Activities section of the CD-ROM provides 42 hands-on exercises. The exercises are a combination of dynamic and static illustrations. As the CD-ROM describes, these exercises are intended to help the reader to "...master the basic Wireless concepts." These exercises are a bonus even if the reader has access to the actual equipment.

The Demo Activities on the CD-ROM contains 13 animated exercises. Once again, providing a most needed benefit to the reader that does not possess access the actual equipment and utility software.

On the inside front cover of the book, a comment is made that this book will prepare the reader to attempt Cisco Wireless LAN Specialist certification exam. After examining the chapters' and CD-ROM content, I have to agree with this comment. In addition to certification preparation, the book is an excellent resource for gaining a healthy understanding of WLAN fundamentals.

Without hesitation, I would read (and recommend) titles from Cisco Press - this title in particular. This book is just the book that I needed to gain the solid understanding of wireless technology fundamentals that I wanted. The illustrations and practical applications afforded me an understanding about wireless networking that I hadn't been able to glean from other books; books that were substantial in their own way but, nevertherless, unable to provide that fundamental knowledge transfer. The rating that I would assign the book would be a 5 - on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest.

4 out of 5 stars A Logical and Clear Wireless Guide.......2004-05-03

The Cisco Network Academy Program book on Wireless Networking entitled "Fundamentals of Wireless LANs" published by Cisco Press is developed for a specific audience. Normally, any Cisco Press book is geared towards individuals in the network arenas; and while many of these books are even more specific in nature, and geared to a defined set of individuals, with this book they do not forget that there are generalists that are also involved in the particular network environment that this book covers. Most of the time, possessing sufficient general knowledge of networking and how items interoperate, you can understand the text's intentions and learn from it. A key ingredient in understanding this book is to realize that wireless networking is in of itself not specific to a platform or concept, but a globally desired resource.

An initial glance of the book was used to determine what the book had to offer and whether it was worth reading. This basic scan revealed that wireless technology and the deployment of this technology is not as simple as plugging in an access point and configuring your client card. The figures and tables provide excellent examples of the importance of the process and understanding needed to deploy a wireless environment. If you look at the back cover for an overview, you are only led to believe this book is designed to assist an individual in preparing for a certification from Cisco Systems as a wireless specialist, but this book contains so much more.

I believe that this book is a must have for any individual researching the wireless networking environment, how it interoperates, and is developed; or for anyone responsible for an already established network. Having personal knowledge of deploying a large scale WLAN environment in the past and supporting it on a global basis, I wish this book had been available two years ago when I had to plan, execute and train individual network engineers on the fundamentals of a wireless network. The concepts and skills needed by any individual to develop and support any wireless environment are different from those needed for a basic network; and thus, this book helps not only educate the individual but also explains the do's and don'ts, the why's and why not's, that matter in an Radio Frequency (RF) environment.

The book is divided into five (5) clear sections (Background, Equipment, Site Security and Preparation, Managing, and finally an Appendix), each dealing with specifics. While at times this book is clearly a Cisco product and designed towards the Cisco Aironet product line as best demonstrated in Part II where the book mentions specific parts and components of the Aironet products, it still provides the general principles for designing and establishing a WLAN network regardless of vendor. With each section new information clearly builds on prior information, but also is general enough to allow an individual to only use that section. For example, in Chapter 4 Wireless Topologies, the chapter builds on prior items like wireless radio technology of Chapter 3 and the background of Part I, yet it is still independent enough to provide an understanding of how to deploy a wireless environment.

This book does come with a supplemental CD that offers several components like demos and interactive labs, in addition to a practice exam to help you prepare for the actual Cisco exam. While the practice exam questions gave me a feel for the actual exam I found the rest of the CD of no additional benefit in supplementing what was covered within the book itself. What this book makes up for in specifics of itself, its' CD lacks several features that could make it better. Among these features are audio explanations of the examples and demos. Since Cisco Press used Macromedia™ for the interactive demos and labs, it would seem only logical to include audio in the demos. I found this item a bit disconcerting and it made my exploration of the demos a bit more difficult. Otherwise, the CD is well structured and an excellent help, especially in preparing for the certification itself.

Overall, even with the problems of the CD itself, I would highly recommend this book to any individual consider adding an understanding of the wireless environment or just looking for an excellent reference book on the subject. If they are only adding to their library for the understanding of wireless networking and the need to support it; even if they are not pursuing a Cisco certification in wireless this book is a clear must have.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for Wireless LANs config, troubleshooting.......2004-05-03

This is a very comprehensive book meant for beginners, as well as experts in need of a practical guide for designing deploying and troubleshooting wireless LANs. The book has a very comprehensive explanation of various aspects of the wireless technologies. The first few chapters are very good source of information for those who are novices in this field. They emphasize the need for wireless LAN's, different components used in the deployment of a wireless LAN, and the various challenges in such a deployment. The next few chapters go into detail explanation of the wireless technology, the various components like access points, bridges, antenna etc, and also explain the various wireless topologies, the security challenges and the available options.

The book has a very practical approach towards teaching the topics. It explains the concepts with practical examples and references to real world situations. The last 2 chapters are a very good source of reference for those who are in process of deployment of a wireless LAN for their company or their SOHO.

Apart from this, the book also aids in preparing for the Cisco wireless LAN support specialist exam. The book is meant for all types of readers, from students to professionals and has a very organized structure, with each chapters focusing on the important concepts, components and functions of wireless LANs.

The companion CD-ROM with the book has some very useful articles and graphical demos, which supplement the book. The CD-ROM also has a good collection of questions meant to help in preparing for the Cisco Wireless LAN support specialist exam.

I would highly recommend the book for anyone who is either studying or working in the field of networking, and for people who are into wireless networking this is book is a must have....

4 out of 5 stars Good wireless programing book; ok treatment of other topics.......2001-10-06

"Wireless Internet & Mobile Business How to Program" contains a good discussion of the various elements of programming for wireless devices. The reader will come away from the programming chapters with a solid understanding of how to implement simple structures. The chapter that introduces algorithms is clear and concise; the chapter that introduces control structures is easy to understand (if somewhat odd in its ordering). The chapter that introduces Object Oriented Programming provides a clear introduction to objects. This approach, using several real-world examples, is a good way to orient the non OO-minded to the use of objects. It covers the different aspects of objects in the abstract well. However, it could use a clearer explanation of why developers should use objects instead of the regular, top-down structured programming they've (possibly just) learned. For those new to programming, this is essential.

The book is not really just a "How to Program" manual, as are some of Deitel & Deitel's other similarly named texts. (Their excellent C++ and Java books come to mind.) Some of the chapters, like the one on employment opportunities, are in danger of becoming obsolete quickly. However, overall this is a solid text with good treatment of wireless programming and other loosely related topics.
