For me, this book is an invaluable reference for building business apps.

Want help choosing a framework? Want some guidance for solving common business problems? These patterns help solve these kinds of problems.

NOTE: I have tried to find other sources for these patterns, and I have only found Fowlers website, which is really only a summary and recommends purchasing the book.

This book has examples in both Java and C#. You can certainly use these patterns in .NET.

Under .NET you are not actually forced to use the Table Model. I think the purpose of this book is to help you realize this.

There are frameworks for .NET that use the Domain Model and Data Mapper patterns, but you would never know this unless you were familiar with the patterns in this book.

For me, reading this book didn't allow me to write new code, but it did allow me to understand my choice to use a particular framework/technique over another.

Educates you on Enterprise Architecture.......2007-03-10

As a newcomer to enterprise architecture this book educated me on possibilities for decisions to be made in designing an enterprise architect. It will also give you a language for describing existing characteristics of an existing enterprise application which may use some combination of the patterns describe in this book. The discussion of where to keep session state for a webapp was particularly helpful to me.

I haven't been able to read it cover to cover, but i read the mapping chapter and it was good. Explain a complex subject in relly simple way.

Also the hard cover is nice!

Key book on enterprise patterns.......2006-07-30

Even if you find enterprise stuff immensely dull, dealing with databases and web pages is a pretty common task, most of the action in software development revolves around it, and who wants to be completely ignorant of the the alphabet soup of various technologies the IT blogs, books and websites are floating in?

So if you must immerse yourself in this area, what better than a Martin Fowler book? The code is mainly in Java, with a fairly large smattering of C#. It would probably help if you understood some basics of enterprise development in those languages, e.g. servlets and JDBC for Java.

The patterns in this book cover organising domain logic, database mapping and access, web presentation, concurrency, and the book finishes by covering base patterns, a mixture of lower level abstractions of the sort covered in Fowler's first book, Analysis Patterns (e.g. Money), and those that bear a close resemblance to the classic Gang of Four patterns, with an enterprise twist (e.g. Plugin and Gateway). Nearly all the other patterns refer to these, so I don't know why these didn't appear first. Apart from that though, the book is very well organised. And the opening essay, that discusses the trade offs of every pattern and how they fit together in an application, is immensely helpful.

Wizened enterprisers looking for new material will not find much new here, but surely the point of patterns catalogues are to get down on paper the practices of those same wizened enterprisers, not to strike off in new directions. Therefore, an experienced developer should see this as a way to organise what they already know, and maybe in doing so, reveal some new insights.

A newcomer to enterprise development will definitely get a lot out of this, as the underpinnings to the plethora of modern enterprise applications are laid bare. You're not going to become a Hibernate, Struts or EJB expert from this book, but you should at least have a clue about what problems they're trying to solve.

As usual, Fowler manages to be a model of clarity, while still injecting regular touches of wry humour, quite an achievement given the potentially bone-dry material. If you want to know the basics of enterprise software, start here.

It's good, but have a lot of errors... so i just don't like.

Disorganized and "uncut".......2007-02-19

I had to purchase this book for a graduate school course. There is a lot of good information here. Unfortunately lengthy examples and tangents muddy it up pretty badly. Also, I think the author(s) could have safely assumed that readers are familiar with programming; maybe that perspective could have grounded and guided the chapter flow a little better.
Looking at any 1 section, the writing is good and the explanations are clear for the most part. The catch is that the book as a whole is a collection of enormous disorganized chapters; chapter 2 is almost 100 pages. This work is dire need of editing and some understanding of its intended audience.

goes beyond simple digital logic and into more boring technical details like the true calculation of CPU cycle run time - hated the class and my professor almost failed me - make sure you take the right professor with the college course - very time consuming and not fun at all

This book is one of the better books that I have used for my courses. Even though the subject taught at hand is not trivial this book makes it a lot simpler. Trust me this book is a lot better than some other books I have seen. 500% better than Digital Design by Mano.

Good information; poor presentation.......2006-11-27

The information contained in this book is sound, and the coverage of a variety of topics is relatively thorough. It is, however, difficult to appreciate these strengths given the numerous flaws in the text. Minor flaws include numerous misleading typographical errors, and too little attention to the flow of information.

The big mistake, though, is the failure to publish a complete book. If you want to learn from this book, then you will need to spend a good bit of time either sitting at a computer reading, or printing out the PDF files on the accompanying CD. The appendices (which are not extraneous, but rather a fundamental part of the text which contain information that's referred to throughout the book) are included ONLY on the accompanying CD. For more than 50% of the review exercises are just references to PDF files. The contents of the CD are not available from the publisher's web site. Do NOT buy a used copy of this book that's missing the accompanying CD. If you like taking books with you to read away from the office, don't buy this book at all. You'll spend too much effort wondering why the printer felt the need to offload a good bit of the printing work onto you. All of this is made even less tolerable by the poor information flow, which will leave you needing to make reference to the appendices many times throughout virtually all other chapters of the book.

It's possible that a future edition may fix these issues. Until then, there have to be better ways to learn.

The best for getting the theoretical foundation of compilers.......2007-06-13

This is the classical reference book for compiler design. This is not an easy text because of its heavy use of mathematical notation and the algorithms are presented only in pseudo code but you will not find a more complete collection of compiler related algorithms than in this book.

Warmed over ghost of past excellence.......2007-05-19

I spent some serious quality time with the first edition (the "red dragon book"), in three main episodes over the past dozen years: 1) undergraduate compilers class, 2) industry project, and 3) parser generator implementation. During all three episodes, I was disappointed in various ways, though there is no denying that the book contains a wealth of information. As an undergraduate, I found the book somewhat impenetrable. When in industry, I found the book too abstract. When implementing a parser generator, I discovered that the book excludes important research results with regard to LR parser generation. It is the last disappointment that I will focus on.

The book presents parser generation in layers of increasing complexity, from SLR to LR to LALR, where LALR is presented as the penultimate algorithm, though LALR parsers can only handle a subset of the grammars that LR can handle. The justification for this is that the original Knuth LR algorithm is intractable for large grammars. However, an efficient, fully correct, approach for LR parser generation was published in 1977, and on top of that it appears easier to implement than efficient LALR parser generation! The red dragon book's original authors simply cannot have been unaware of this research result, but I suspect that they elected to warm over the "green dragon book" (published in 1977) rather than incorporate the state of the art as of 1986 into the "red dragon book". Now here we are another 20 years later, and as near as I can tell from reading through available online information, the "purple dragon book" is perpetuating this omission. The result of the red dragon book is that we have an entire generation of computer scientists who have been mislead to think that LALR is somehow superior to LR, and the purple dragon book is setting things up for yet another generation to be mislead.

Useful book.......2007-02-20

I'm a computer engineering student and I purchased the book for my programming languages and compilers course. At present I still haven't completed the course, but I've already found this book pretty useful so far. The concepts are clearly and well explained, so that I could better understand some points that I found rather obscure during the lessons. It's being of great help, so I'm very satisfied of this purchase.

Great book but...........2007-02-15

This is the numero uno among compiler books. But whoever designed the new cover out to be have their sketch pens stuffed down their throat. Why change the cover! The previous book was called the dragon book and was a red dragon. No one ever changed Feynman's lecture books by painting the cover blue, did they? Addison Wesley should take their new edition cover design and stuff it.

Tanenbaum is good...Gotta give him that........2006-02-22

I'm only 1/3 through the book so far, but it's been good. There's even a few snippits of dry humor that make it a little more interesting. As far as breadth and depth of material goes, it starts out assuming you know very little about hardware/architecture, and takes you step by step from there. Assuming the book stays as interesting and downright wooty, I'll give it 5 stars. It's not very often that I find a computer book that I'm willing to read cover to cover.

Classical CS authors.......2005-10-12

Tanenbaum is one of the CS classical authors. Any CS student or instructor should own a copy of this updated edition of Structured Computer Organization.

The book structure remains the same, but there are many important updates, mainly in the examples and case studies. Tanenbaum's style is also the same: a bit arid and telegraphic, specially for newcomers, but his approach is much better for an introductory computer organization and architecture course than the books by Patterson/Hennessy (which are mandatory reading for any CS student/instructor as well).

I have basically one criticism to this book: it is very pricey! Particularly for an instructor whose wages are not paid in dollars...

The bible for students of computer architecture........2007-06-08

I'd borrowed the 2nd edition from a colleague and read it cover to cover. I found the book so useful that I decided to buy it. Bought this 4th edition. The extra topics and updated examples/discussions are perfect for what I'm surrounded by in the industry today. Only read through a quarter of the book so far, but enjoying every page of it. Amazing how you can apply the exercises right out of the book and into your work - quantitative analysis is much more insightful than qualitative hand-waving.

The preface mentioned there's new text on multicore processor architecture; looking forward to that - the world has already ventured on to the multicore generation, about time we got JLH/DAP's analysis on multicore design.

I think, though, that the book warrants a hard cover. Not sure if Kaufmann is deliberately going cheapo (maybe JLH/DAP should find a new publisher?) or if I got skimped by the seller.

Haven't yet looked into the CD that's included inside the back cover. So there's still more to explore.

One of the finest Computer Architecture books in existence.......2007-01-23

This is the latest edition of the updated classic by the people who invented RISC. Clear and up to date, it take you from a virtual beginner to a situation where you can follow understand current comp arch research ( and if you are a masochist, the discussions on the comp.arch newsgroup ! :-) )

Note the laudatory review that appears on this web page written by the legendary John Mashey, the founder of MIPS. A recommendation from John Mashey, who helped design the MIPS RISC architecture, as well recently contributing to the design of SGI's NUMAflex modular computer architecture is indeed high praise.

Run, do not walk to your local library to reserve that copy !
Or if you are feeling generous, treat yourself and buy this great book.

Great for reference, poor for learning.......2007-01-10

A great book for the advanced student. Perfect both for specific reference on technical details and for an understanding of high-level ideas. Parts on the analysis of the Pentium 4 and other modern processors, with details on implementation, mainly within the appendices in the included CD-ROM.

For the student, the book by itself is not a sufficient resource, and it must be coupled with a course in computer architecture.

The next edition of the definitive series; another must-have.......2006-09-25

Computer architecture has seen vast changes in the last 20 years, and fortunately, H&P somehow manage to do a new edition about every 5 years, often enough to stay current. When the First Edition appeared, it quickly became *the* standard textbook on the topic, to be replaced in that role by each successive edition.

Computer architectures complexify over time, and so do books. The Third Edition was about 1100 pages long. The Fourth has been shrunk back to something more manageable by moving subsidiary details to a CD included with the book.

This edition is well worth having, even if one already has the earlier ones. In particular, the additional material on multiprocessors is especially welcome, given that it has become much more difficult to speed up uniprocessors.

Most people who work in or near computer systems architecture know these books, but I have often recommended them to others, such as technology journalists, venture capitalists, and financial analysts, i.e., people who are rarely computer archtiects, but need to understand computer technology and its trends. Many such have been surprised to find the book was useful to them.

H&P write very clearly, and each chapter outlines its key concepts for a topic, then works down to detailed analyses, and then comes back up to summarize. hence, I've often recommended to people:

1) Read the first few sections of each chapter.

Anyway, I expect this Edition will be just as indispensable as the earlier ones.

The book has lots of diagrams that explain the various topics.
I like the classification of webservices into primary SOA (basic web services standards) and the contemporary SOA (what comes with web services extensions to support SOA).

I just find that the author sometimes repeats himself.and this is why I rate it 3 stars and not 4

This is a high level book with lots of high level diagrams and pointers to the author's web site for more information. Redundant and not very useful. A much better technical introduction to SOA is Service Oriented Architecture For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)); for business perspective, try Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA): A Planning and Implementation Guide for Business and Technology.

Pompous, pretentious, sometimes technically inaccurate.. these words come to mind when you read this book, and unfortunately every page you read just confirms it.

Author made an attempt to write an objective "companion" book on SOA for everyone, and end up writing a book for noone but himself. It is too technical for non-technical people, too primitive and inaccurate for technical people, too opinionated to be objective, and too long and heavy for anyone to be a companion.

How to put it better? It is a waste of a book.

Very practical guide for EAP projects.......2006-12-14

The book focuses on the practical steps necessary to perform successful EAP rather than on theoretical concepts and is therefore useful as a guide in EAP projects. It aligns with the Zachman Framework for I.S. Architectures and that alignment is explained in the book. The forward was written by John Zachman and he gives it high marks (of course).

The book addresses the most difficult aspects of EAP--how to handle the political hurdles and human issues that can stop an EAP project dead in its tracks. In doing so, the author demonstrates keen insight and experience with technology projects in business. It's not just about those aspects, but they are included for the benefit of anyone going through an EAP process.

The book takes the logical approach of starting with the definition of the business according to its functions (business value chain), moving next to the high-level, conceptual definition of the data that is required by the business. It then uses that data model to define (not design) the conceptual application architecture and then, in turn, the conceptual technology architecture. There is a clear distinction between the conceptual architectures and the more concrete designs that occur at the lower levels of the Zachman Framework. The author makes a convincing argument that this high-level definition needs to be created before the lower-level designs or the efforts will fail to produce the desired results. Samples of reports, such as a Business Model and a Data Architecture report, are provided in the appendix. I highly recommend this book.

Excellent resource - but use with caution.......2004-03-01

I purchased this book with it was first published and it greatly influenced my thinking and has continued to do so to this day. There is a large caveat I want to share before continuing - be careful of the Zachman Framework because if you do base your enterprise architecture on it you will soon discover that making changes is a tedious process that ripples across the matrix. That said, I continue to believe in the basic concepts and components of the framework, and I also think that it is an excellent way to gain a view of an enterprise when you are attempting to model it.

Caveat aside, the techniques and many of the elements of the framework provided in this book are invaluable to creating any enterprise framework or initiating and managing a process improvement program. While Chapter 1 describes enterprise architecture planning in the context of the Zachman Framework, all of the subsequent chapters can be applied to any framework, which what makes this book as valuable today as it was a decade ago. Specifically, Chapter 3 (Planning), 5 (Enterprise Survey), 8 (Application Architecture), and 10 (Implementation Plan) are among the best of the best practices for approaching any project that is enterprise-wide in scope. For that reason I continue to keep my worn copy of this book nearby as a reference.

Despite my views on the Zachman Framework and some of its limitations and challenges, you may not have a choice - if you are on a team that is refactoring your enterprise in accordance with the Zachman Framework I recommend that you visit the Zachman Institute (see ASIN B00016NEXI) and augment the decade old material in this book with the up-to-date content available on that site.

If you are still in the exploratory stage and are considering this book because you want to learn more about either the Zachman Framework or EAP I recommend that you not only purchase this book (for the reasons cited above), but that you also read "How to Survive in the Jungle of Enterprise Architecture Framework: Creating or Choosing an Enterprise Architecture Framework" (ASIN 141201607X).

A book for multiple audiences that stands the test of time.......2004-01-13

I initially read this book at the start of my career as a systems analyst. The Zachman framework presented a great way to think about the relationships between systems, data, processes and business. Later on, as a project manager, it provided a more useful tool for understanding the importance of architecture in developing systems. In addition, it applies to architects and senior IT managers who want to make the most of their investment.

The writing displays the academic rigor of the author's background, as well as the applicability that comes from his wealth of experience. Perhaps this blend is best typified in the only application I've seen of reapplying (rewriting?) Deming's 14 points of management for an application in IT.

Perhaps what separates this book from most is how well it's held up over time. At 10 years old, it hasn't aged. If anything, in today's age of complexity, the relevance of a coherent understanding of architecture is more important than ever. This book will help you understand it.

A must-have for every Architect.......2003-11-17

This is a must-have book for Enterprise Architects. Application designers, aspiring to be architects, may also read this book. Certainly one of the best EAP books based on the Zachman framework.

Other reviews of this book are valid in that Enterprise Architecture Planning is an invaluable resource for developing an enterprise-wide architecture. However, this excellent book is also an invaluable resource for the service delivery practitioner.

While the Zachman Framework is a recognized approach to enterprise architectures, it is also a excellent tool to anchor processes and procedures for delivering service and support for applications. The notion of application profiles are an excellent paradigm from which to develop problem management processes in support of enterprise applications.

Ideas and concepts set forth in the book are aimed at the enterprise architect, but can also be refactored into building blocks for a service delivery plan that is tightly integrated into applications delivery.

The above statement is based on my definitions, which are: service delivery is the set of processes that IT provides support for reliability, availability and infrastructure support that is aligned to business imperatives and requirements. Applications delivery is the processes employed to manage business requirements and translate them into products (developed or purchased).

This book provides a sound framework for achieving the above objectives, which I am sure were not the authors' primary intent. So, while this book provides the enterprise architect with a proven approach based on a proven framework, it has additional value. Specifically, it also provides the production services and operations functions within IT with a valid approach to integrating service delivery with applications delivery, and aligning them to business requirements.

I love this book. I am struck by its simplicity. How can a book be so simple, yet so clear in delivering the message, in a topic that is considered to be complicated? Computer architecture is not easy, but with the help of this book I was able to build a very solid foundation when I took the course. And even though it is an introductory book, I still refer to it in more advanced courses and related topics.

The usefulness of a text book often depends on the professor..........2006-02-17

I found this book to be one of the most clearly written texts on the subject of computer architecture(as opposed to the terse, cryptic Astrom and Wittenmark books for control systems, for example.)

Now, a professor can easily test around the basics of any text book by surprising students with unexpected special cases, exceptions, and boundary conditions. But, that is not the fault of the text book itself. If any of those tricks actually appeared in a text book, they would be ignored and he/she would find new ones to test.

Noone can memorize how to think; knowing how to solve the examples in a textbook is only the beginning. That's why there are homework problems.

Unpopular professor tricks aside, I think this is a great book on the topic and it gave me the skills to perform certain assignments on my own during my first engineering job...skills that my employer thought he would have to teach to all us newbies. I was glad I had this book in school.

Nice and Simpe Introductory Book.......2004-06-16

I have three of M. Mano's books and this one is the one I've liked the most. I found the author's exposition of the material good on average. I'm using this book for self-study. The book provides a nice overview of computer architecture by focusing on the basic concepts in manner that is not dependent on a particular real-life architecture.

I must say however that I gotten up to chapter 11 and have become totally unmotivated to finish the book (only two chapters left). I've gone through most of the interesting problems of each chapter but have no clue to the 'correctness' of some of them since the book doesn't come with solutions.

One thing that I really dislike about a book is the lack of an errata sheet. All of Mano's books I own lack an errata sheet. I've noticed some errors in the book although nothing major.

Recommendation: As far as I know there are no really good books in the area of computer architecture. If you're looking for a simple introductory book on computer architecture, I would recommend this book. Avoid this book if you're looking for a more technical treatment on the subject.

Incredably helpful.......2007-05-12

When the book/CD came I had problems getting the CD to work Didn't know if it was me or the CD or my PC. I contacted Mr.Fukai and he e-mailed me back immediatly. He stayed with me through a dozen Emails trying to help me.
The CD was bad BTW and he had his wife send me out a new one that worked just fine.
I was a bit exhausted from it all by the time the CD came but stuff happens to the best of us.
The CD is incredably helpful along with the book of illustrations. I haven't gotten through even half of it due to my work load but I'm sure when I continue with it I won't have much trouble in spite of being PC challenged.
Mr.Fukai I think has this book geared for people like myself as well as hard core PC users.
He seems to be doing his best to take you through it one step at a time slowly and deliberate.
I highly recommend this book/CD

Great Way to Learn SketchUp.......2006-07-05

I am sure if you are a Google fan you now know that they offer SketchUp for free. Dr. Fukai's book assumed you had a limited amount of time (480 minutes) using the SketchUp 4.0 trial version included with his book. I can say that his book is truly one fantastic way to learn a lot about the details of modeling with SketchUp. Dr. Fukai's interactive "shorties" allows you to go over as often as needed to learn the details of this 3D software. I was having some difficulty part way through the tutorials and emailed Dr. Fukai and received detailed instructions on how to proceed. He is an excellent teacher and his book is highly recommended.

This book provide a good foundation for a beginning Sketchup user. The combination of video and print addresses the needs of different types of learning. Professional narration would help the videos. This is not the book for 3D organic modeling or advanced architecture users.

Excellent Reference Book.......2005-06-22

I have many years of architectural drafting experience. Although this book says "Basic Skills" on the cover, it is much more than basic. It's an excellent reference book, covering everything that is needed for interior design drafting: from line weights to scale, dimensioning, plans, elevations, sections, checklists, furniture and finish schedules, contract documents, and the list goes on. I highly recommend this book for students of interior design and practising designers alike.
