5 out of 5 stars Great for a PM.......2007-05-11

Am currently in the process of executing a DW/BI project, my background is JAVA application Project management. This book has been great in getting me upto speed on the basic architecture and lingo of BI/DW.

Book lays out step by step the different parts to a DW. The front office, the back office, meta data repository. Highlights how DW/BI phases are different from other application dev phases. It doesn't go into how to do data modelling - for this get the lifecycle toolkit. But it gives a great overview of planning a BI/DW initiative. Much better than the pure Project Management books.
To get a complete picture I'd use this book along with the Toolkit book.

4 out of 5 stars Good organized document.......2007-01-11

I like this book, its easy to read it...

Good document

4 out of 5 stars Good Practical advice.......2007-01-09

The book offers good practical advice that can be used in the development of a Business Intelligence (BI) project / initiative. The over all road map provides a check list of issues to consider and offers a place to start in planning your own initiative. It is a good reference for individuals starting a BI project for the first time.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Overview.......2006-11-03

First of all the term "Business Intelligence" means different things to different people. Where I work BI means the user interface 'front end' technology of a data warehouse (think Cognos and Business Objects). However this book is about the entire system ETL, DB, user interface. It does a decent job of explaining the entire system, organization, and process.

Pros: Comprehensive, even has two chapters focusing on metadata, which is usually overlooked by similar books despite it's enormous importance.

Cons: Not enough info about specific products. For instance, a process is described for determining whether to purchase or to make an ETL system but not specific info on, for instance, Informatica's strengths and weaknesses as a product and a company. When dealing with big vendors there's no way to know if the product is junk or not by looking at the literature and talking to salesman. You need the scoop from someone who is experienced using the product, someone you can trust, and this book does not provide that kind of info.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic BI Book.......2006-04-06

I loved this book. The way its structured is brilliant, you can easily start reading this book from any chapter and not get confused. Each chapter gives you a detailed analysis on whats required and any pitfalls you may face during the specific phase of your implementation!

Highly recommended. If you invovlved in a BI project (like myself!) Buy this book NOW!

4 out of 5 stars very practical.......2000-10-20

This book is a very practical book for information analysts, to get an overview. It covers all issues concerning a datawarehouse, without becoming too theoratical. The only minor point is the sometimes unlogical sequence.

4 out of 5 stars DW / DSS Development Common Sense and Practical Advice.......1999-06-15

As someone who has been architecting, managing and implementing Data Warehouses and DSS since the beginning of the 80's I can conclude that this book is a very good introduction to Building a Data Warehouse for Decision Support. I think it would also serve as an excellent introductory book for Business Executives and DW / DSS Project Managers / Programme Managers alike. As it highlights certain pitfalls and tips from the trenches that are: not obvious to the uninitiated; avoidable; or costly then this is book is worth reading - rather than skimming through.

2 out of 5 stars It's more like an experience report than a book.......1998-06-12

First I'm supprised to see the big font size used in this book, which makes the book heavy in weight light in content. Although it does make a good good picture of building a data warehouse from application point of view, it failed to say any thing about the real stuff of decision support, such as associate rule. The readers are also expecting a list of references for futher reading, but the book offered nothing! I don't recommend this book to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars This is the book you give to people who say "a data what?".......1997-06-14

Ms. Poe has written an excellent book on the data warehouse and what it can do for you. She tackles questions like why do I need another database, what is the difference between a tactical and strategic data source. She does discuss star schemas but not in so much detail that you could build one. In fact, if you actually are building a data warehouse yourself, look elsewhere. I recommend "The Data Warehouse Toolkit" by Kimball. Ms. Poe sent me an e-mail that indicated her next effort would be in an unrelated field. I see that Amazon does not have a discount on this book but at some trade shows they give this book away for free. After all, it does sell the data warehouse concept

    Book Description

Decision Support and Data Warehouse Systems ties the more traditional view of decision support to the rapidly evolving topics of database management and data warehouse. As organizations move quickly into networked-based environments, the nature of decision support tools has become increasingly complex. These tools are now used collaboratively and the use of data warehousing mechanisms will be a critical success factor for the survival of many organizations. This new book provides a strong foundation for the use of models within the context of building and using decision support systems, and it will focus on multi-dimensional databases and client/server computing.

1 out of 5 stars Not a compuer science book!!.......2004-05-06

I am a computer science student (not buisness or management) so I might not be the kind of reader the author had in mind but this book was used as text book for my Decision Support Systems subject and for that purpose it was of very little use.

It is far to general and uses an imaginary case study in stead of real life examples. It concentrates on the business aspect of a decision support system so if you are studying DSS from a technical point of view, stay away from this book!

    3 out of 5 stars A Good Book.......2000-07-30

This is a good book. It contains easy, understandable language with clear examples explaining the concepts discussed in the book.

      Description:
We describe a methodology and a prototype implementation of an online analytical processing system for mobile devices. The system guides the user to narrow down the search space using association rules. We also describe multi-layered caching techniques to improve performance and increase system utilization even in the presence of disconnections. The system is built using a three-tier architecture comprising of a data warehouse, a middle-tier server, and client mobile devices. Finally we conducted a series of simulation experiments to evaluate the performance of our association rule-based system and the multi-layered caching.

        Description:
In tandem with the growth of the Internet and e-business, the number of digital data sources has increased immensely. These data sources contain important transactional data and are generally interconnected via a network. This has created a pressing need for a suitable executive information system (EIS) that is capable of extracting data from internal and external data sources and providing data analysis on demand for business executives. On-demand data analysis requires an information integration approach that can manage rapid changes in data sources. Existing EISs commonly adopt data warehousing technology to consolidate data from multiple sources in a tailor-made fashion, and support predefined multidimensional data analysis. However, this architecture is neither adaptable to changes in local sources nor flexible enough for ad hoc analyses. This paper develops methods and algorithms for a new EIS architecture that takes advantage of a metadatabase to achieve adaptability and flexibility. A PC-based prototype is built to prove the concept.

          Description:
Since the early 1970s, decision support systems (DSS) have evolved significantly. In this paper, the design and implementation of MSMiner, a developing platform for DSS, is introduced. The system is constructed on a data warehouse and integrated with a number of data mining algorithms. It is well suited for on-line analytical processing (OLAP). The characteristics of MSMiner include the ability to support multiple data sources and data mining strategies, additional organizational flexibility in regard to data and mining strategies, and the powerful expansibility of data mining tasks.

This book is sweet and sour. It is good because it covers many different topics by some very knowledgable authors. But on the other hand, I found it difficult to read. With so many authors, the pace kept changing along with the style. Get this book if you have time to rehash. Otherwise pass over this one for "Data Warehouse Project Managment".

            Description:
Due to the sensitive data contained in Data Warehouses (DW), it is essential to specify security measures from the early stages of the DW design and enforce them. Traditional access control models for transactional (relational) databases, based on tables, columns and rows, are not appropriate for DWs. Instead, security and audit rules defined for DWs must be specified based on the multidimensional (MD) modeling used to design data warehouses. Current approaches for the conceptual modeling of DWs do not allow us to specify security and confidentiality constraints in the conceptual modeling phase. In this paper, we propose an Access Control and Audit (ACA) model for DWs by specifying security rules in the conceptual MD modeling. Thus, we define authorization rules for users and objects and we assign sensitive information rules and authorization rules to the main elements of a MD model (e.g., facts or dimensions). Moreover, we also specify certain audit rules allowing us to analyze user behaviors. To be able to include and use our ACA model in the conceptual MD modeling, we extend the Unified Modeling Language (UML) with our ACA model, thereby allowing us to design secure MD models. Finally, to show the benefit of our approach, we apply our approach to a health care case study.

Data warehouses store data that explicitly and implicitly reflect customer patterns and trends, financial and business practices, strategies, know-how, and other valuable managerial information. In this paper, we suggest a novel way of acquiring more knowledge from corporate data warehouses. Association-rule mining, which captures co-occurrence patterns within data, has attracted considerable efforts from data warehousing researchers and practitioners alike. In this paper, we present a new data-mining method called qualified association rules. Qualified association rules capture correlations across the entire data warehouse, not just over an extracted and transformed portion of the data that is required when a standard data-mining tool is used.
