Book Description

Now in paperback, the national bestseller that's changing America, one student at a time fter publishing his New York Times bestseller The Essential 55, award-winning teacher Ron Clark took his rules on the road and traveled to schools in 49 states. He met amazing teachers, administrators, students, parents-all kinds of people involved in bringing up great kids. In the best of them, he noticed the same qualities that he'd observed in many of the outstanding individuals he'd worked with during his time teaching in North Carolina and Harlem.

Download Description

Ron Clark's THE EXCELLENT 11 contains eleven sections, each with a theme directly related to teaching and raising children. In each section, the author gives advice, tells stories of his experiences, and explains the importance of each theme within the learning environment. The learning environment includes the classroom, but it extends out of the classroom to the larger world as well. Some themes included in the book are:

ADVENTURE - How to travel with children. Top places for field trips in America and teaching parents how to turn the summer vacation into an educational excursion.

INGENUITY - Teaching kids to think for themselves. Common Sense Strategies, showing kids how to use resources within their reach and be successful. Finding grants/scholarships/summer camps for kids.

APPRECIATION - Teaching students what it means to be thankful for the things others do for them and the lives they are fortunate enough to lead.

LOVE - The most important component of education.

5 out of 5 stars The Excellent 11...Ron Clark.......2007-03-15

Ron is a very inspirational writer. I will be able to incorporate many things into my classroom.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Resource.......2007-03-10

The Excellent 11 is a wonderful resource for teachers and parents. While it seems like a low-budget sequel to The Essential 55, it does have several nuggets of information that are beneficial to the reader. I especially like the anecdotes about his experiences. It is a truly inspiring book. Ron Clark's writing style is homey and comfortable for all types of readers.

That said, it is an easy read and enjoyable. As a teacher, I look for ideas to incorporate into the classroom (high school) to make the students more responsive, resonsible, and interested in their individual education. Mr. Clark is full of ideas that work. So often teachers are given the idea du jour, which ends up be a recycled fad from the past that didn't work then and won't work now.

I highly recommend this book for all teachers (and parents) that are interested in educating children.

An excellent resource for teachers and parents. He shares wonderful anecdotes and his famous enthusiasm.

5 out of 5 stars Lessons for teachers........2007-01-04

We are trying to get an Alternative High School up and running again and I wish we could clone Mr. Clark to teach all students. The next best thing is to have all of our teachers read and follow his map to help our students achieve success.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-01-04

I listened to this in my car cd player while commuting - I was quite inspired by this disc. I'm a parent dealing with an impetuous young boy and I found Mr. Clark's experiences enlightening, his ideas helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Solid technology book that is not outdated when published.......2005-09-17

Many technology books are outdated by the time they are published. I am pleased to say that this book methodically moves through effective instruction and then how to use technology to aid it. I will be using this book as a reference for some time to come.

5 out of 5 stars Technology presented with clarity.......2005-01-29

Pay no attention to one gentleman's "Apple Pie" comment about the step-by-step instructions included in this book. After all, not everyone is as technologically adept as he may be. If you have already mastered such technology, then this material is possibly too basic for you. But for the rest of us, one of the major benefits of this book is indeed the fact that the instructions have been so clearly presented!

If you are an educator, as I am, and you are looking to learn more about real-world technology as it applies to your classroom or learning center, then I HIGHLY recommend this book (8th Ed.).

2 out of 5 stars Light and introductory with the scent of apple pie.......2004-07-14

I wasn't impressed with this book for two separate reasons. Firstly, the production standard struck me as almost 1960s' in style - black and white photos (nice 'grainy' look), big bulky monitors and a general aged format. It is peculiar I agree, but the book looks like it was written at least 30 if not 40 years ago. The second set of quibbles I have with the text is that it presume the reader is almost completely ignorant of any kind of presentation technology. This assumption may have been acceptable several decades ago but the universality of TV seriously undermines its value. Television is constantly exposting the public to new technologies. For instance, in the text there is a piece with graphic devoted to how to load a slide projector. How relevant is that to today's classroom? Moreover, any decent bit of kit comes with instructions. I accept that the authors wish to do a thorough hand holding with the reader, but the book assume too little exposure to technology which renders it advice mediocre in places. Possibly it should be retitled Instructional Media Technology for Complete Dummies. The bits on the web are small (literally bits) which is not a good sign. Overall, the book was lightweight - possibly I am being unfair as I am not looking for the technology it covers, but for review of current and future developments. In any event I regret buying the book as it doesn't fit my needs and I didn't like its presentation style. It is a tired book, more like jaded, that does not mesh well with the style culture of modern multimedia technology.

5 out of 5 stars Nice update of a classic textbook.......1999-12-31

As a co-author, I can report that Instructional Media upholds the tradition established by this textbook in 1982. It is aimed primarily at those who are at the entry level in terms of using media for education or training. It helps instructors decide what media to use for different teaching/learning situations, and gives practical tips on HOW to achieve the best effect when using technology. The book began with a focus on audiovisual media; the sixth edition retains the most relevant audiovisual content, but shifts focus toward computer-based delivery. What remains constant is the conviction that effectiveness of mediated instruction depends very much on what the instructor does...how the technology is integrated into the overall learning program.

5 out of 5 stars Interested in VCoPs? Buy this book!.......2006-05-29

This book is methodologically sound AND useful. Suggestions and advices are backed up by literature, it's not just the usual collection of "expert opinions". By the same token, suggestions and advices are sound and practical, not just impractical "erudite hypotheses". Perfect for pracademics!

5 out of 5 stars It applies to virtual communities of practice.......2003-08-28

The material in this book can be applied to increase the productivity of virtual communities of practice. It is a book I recommend to those who make a living in the world of knowledge management.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need to consider for asynchronous learning.......2001-07-22

I have found this book to be very helpful if you are REALLY interested in doing asynchronous work online. The authors are leading edge thinkers about this subject who have earned themselves a place in the world consulting to people who want to do this. The problem is that many, many people only THINK they know what asynchronous learning is and until you actually experience it you won't know. Can't know something until you learn it. Rena and Keith have done a very good job of showing you EVERYTHING you need to know to get the job done. You can use it like a menu, take what you want and leave the rest alone. They spend a good deal of time trying to get people to understand the TRUE nature of an asynchronous world. They are sincerely at the leading edge. I think I know what leading edge is, I think I'm there experiencing true asynchronous learning now at the renowned Fielding Institute. Good book for your reference. You may not need all of it NOW but you will soon!

1 out of 5 stars Big Mac of a book: high calories--low nutrition.......2001-07-13

This book is indeed 'pedagogically sound'; the trouble is: it likes the sound of its own voice, far too much, and plods on around the houses for far too long. It is a Big Mac of a book: high calories--low nutrition. I wasted money buying it, don't you make the same mistake. Buy something shorter, less cack-handed, and trendy.

4 out of 5 stars Learning Communities and Cyberspace.......2001-05-17

The advice given in this books should not be limited to cyberspace. The examples, experiences, and education this book provides are applicable to both the classroom and cyberspace. Learning should not be a one way avenue from master to student, but a dialogue. This book is a stepping stone for learning in the information age.

Book Description

The final decade of the Second Millennium has issued a flourish of books foretelling the end of everything from science to history. In the first decade of the Third Millennium, books about new beginnings will take their place. Is it a time for despair or hope? Many of today's social critics deplore the effects of multiculturalism in spawning a postmodernism era. One observer, however, finds reason to celebrate, claiming it's about time we looked beyond the confines of our king-of-the-mountain value system, to a broader plane of understanding.

In his newest book, Charles D. Hayes submits that the American Dream we've learned to champion is an insufficient aspiration for human beings. Cultural expectations create social reality. "If having must come at the expense of being," he asserts, "then you and I are missing the best part of life and our culture is the worse for it."

Reaching the top--at any cost, by the current model--has outlived its usefulness as a go! al in human society. Those who make it, remain unfulfilled. Those who don't, become marginalized and resentful. Through the power of our intellect, says Hayes, we can begin living off the interest of our biological world instead of continuing to eat away at the principle. Either we improve society through our ideas, or we perpetuate its deterioration through a lack of them.

A sophomoric sense of citizenship might reason this way: "Since I wasn't alive during slavery, I bear no responsibility for it." Certainly, it is senseless to blame ourselves for what happened before we were born, but Hayes maintains we do have a responsibility toward what is. If you and I are the beneficiaries of an unjust system stemming from the biases, prejudices, and atrocities of the past, then we have an obligation to remedy the unfairness. Beyond the American Dream points the way to rising above the lock-step patterns of our culture and assuming our rightful roles as thoughtful, responsible citizens.

In failing to truly value to individual thought and reflection, our society guarantees that an ever-increasing number of citizens will practice neither. As in his previous works, Hayes urges readers to take control of their own learning and to adopt self-directed inquiry as a lifelong priority. Education should be regarded "not as something you get," he says, "but as something you take. Self-education is the lifeblood of democracy, the key to controlling your life, and a means to living your life to its fullest."

Beyond the American Dream illustrates these ideas in practice. Offering fresh insight on the wisdom of great thinkers from Aristotle to Alan Watts, together with a tantalizing juxtaposition of ideas that can't help but foster reflection, Hayes demonstrates how the sensual pleasures of learning can be inherently more satisfying than anything posing as entertainment. He gives compelling evidence that America's greatest treasures are found, "not in our shopping malls, but in our libraries."

Certain that the greatest means we have of persuading others is to live by the example we advocate, Charles Hayes challenges each of us to re-evaluate our values and to amend our ambitions accordingly. Beyond the American Dream is a thoughtful summons to awaken from the New Age doctrines that have so engulfed our culture. It is a book about the meaning of meaning and implores us to find purpose and meaning in life by leaving the world a better place than we found it.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2000-12-07

Simply a waste of time. Sorry. The sentiments are fine, but a really tedious read.

5 out of 5 stars The most thoughtful book I've read in the last 20 years.......2000-10-11

I've had thoughts similar to some of the ideas in this book but have never seem them expressed before. This is not the easiest book I've ever read, but it may be the most inspiring. The term lifelong learning means something entirely different to me now.

5 out of 5 stars An Intriguing Read.......2000-09-25

Hayes' text sets out on a challenging journey and does it well. From the outset, he seeks to relate the concepts of high academia to the reader for what they are: elements of a world that has distanced itself from the layperson. This text consistently demonstrates the applicability of these themes to all, regardless of occupation or position. Quite simply, Hayes rejects the academic tendency to assert that compex themes are reserved for an academic audience and places these squarely before any reader to see that they are not mystical, overly sophisticated notons for a special set, but quite easily understood and intriguing given the desire to learn.

4 out of 5 stars Frommian.......1999-08-23

Although I like the book a lot, I can't give it 5 stars (I'd give 4.5 stars if I could), because:

* There were numerous typos -- the most glaring, were at least two places where he confused the words "principle" and "principal" (no intentional pun could be inferred from the context, either);

* Although the book starts off real well, towards the middle, it jumps around disjointed topics that can lose focus, even though he keeps referring back to the "King of the Mountain";

* I found my attention wandering, and I found myself skipping pages, towards the middle of the book (especially the chapter on "belief"), although that might just be because I found myself rehearing old arguments on issues I had already resolved for myself years ago (I'm an atheist);

* It repeats a lot of what many philosophy readers (especially Freethinkers) already know, and that's where it starts to lose my attention. Hayes reminds me a lot of Erich Fromm.

To seasoned Frommians, Anti-Credentialists, Freethinkers, and Skeptics, this book isn't as "belief-shattering" as it might be to the average reader.

Still, I highly recommend it -- I've bought 2 copies as gifts, and I've told friends about it.

5 out of 5 stars A Blow to the Side of the Head.......1999-07-16

In the preface of this book, the author uses Franz Kafka's assertion that a book should wake us up with a blow to the side of the head. This book does that repeatedly.

Book Description

Struggling older English learners pose a real challenge for educators. Some of these students are new arrivals with limited or interrupted schooling. Others have been in and out of ESL and bilingual programs in this country since kindergarten, but have never succeeded academically. How can teachers help older students who lack academic content knowledge and English language proficiency catch up with their classmates? Yvonne and David Freeman provide four research-based keys for closing the achievement gap.

three teachers have put this theory into practice to reach their older English learners. These teachers organize curriculum around themes, use predictable classroom routines, and scaffold instruction in a variety of ways. The clear examples from their classes will help other teachers implement effective practices for their older English learners.

Closing the Achievement Gap features:

  • the four keys for school success for older English learners
  • clear distinctions among the types of older English learners in our schools with examples of students from each category
  • a thorough discussion of the kinds of language proficiency older English learners need
  • a review of the latest research on effective practices for older English learners
  • detailed descriptions from the classrooms of three teachers, including thematic units they have developed, their daily routines, and the strategies they use to scaffold instruction
  • professional extension activities to help readers apply the information in this book to their own educational settings.

For teachers and teacher educators, program directors, resource personnel, and administrators, this book offers both the research and practice schools need to develop effective programs to educate struggling older English learners.

2 out of 5 stars bar bar bar.......2007-05-13

The content of this book is not the problem, it is its poor organizational structure. It is redundant and organized in an unhelpful way, so that the read focusses on the repetitive statement(s), leaving the seemingly tidbits of research and theory to get lost. It's like having a simple base beat up too loud and dragging on throughout a whole album. They could have summed up the content of this book in 2-3 short articles with greater success. The content, however, was helpful!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing resource for ESL teachers!.......2007-01-10

I bought this book to complete some research for my thesis and it turned out to be the best resource I have seen in a while. I have shared the book with all my colleagues and fellows graduate students. I would highly recommend this book to any and all teachers and particularly those who teach language learners.

5 out of 5 stars "Closing the Achievement Gap", August 22, 2002.......2002-08-22

This book, "Closing the Achievement Gap: How to Reach Limited-Formal-Schooling and Long Term English Learners", is an excellent resource for teachers of older English learners with limited formal schooling or English learners with more conversational than academic fluency. Yvonne S. Freeman and David E. Freeman, professors at the Graduate School at Fresno Pacific University, describe in detail these two types of students and provide four main ideas to help teachers meet the academic needs of these struggling students. The Freemans' also cite research on effective teaching practices and describe three teachers working with these particular students in a multi-grade, a middle, and a high school classroom. All three teachers are successfully implementing research proven theories in their classroom practices to help close the achievement gap.
Overall, the Freemans' did a good job in examining each point thoroughly. The format was concise, comprehensible, and the strategies described can easily be used with my Newcomer students. I thought it was a good idea to present three different perspectives of teachers working with a range of age groups. It demonstrated that the theories and strategies presented can be effective across grade levels.
I recommend that school administrators and professors of teaching candidates also read the book for the strategies presented and for the valuable research on second language acquisition. The academic gap of struggling English learners will only continue to widen if educators and administrators do not become more knowledgeable in this area.

          Book Description

SelfDesign, a methodology developed by Brent Cameron over the past 23 years, is much more than another take-off from traditional teaching methods. It is instead a philosophy and a practice based in the belief that children are natural learners. Cameron uses individualized strategies, specific language tools, and a focus on the positive to shift the very premise on which education is built. Through his stories of learners and families he takes the reader on a tour of a new paradigm for learning-the art and science of SelfDesign.

            Book Description

Learning in Places is a concerted effort undertaken by an outstanding group of international researchers to create a resource book that can introduce academic, professional and lay readers to the field of informal learning/education and its potential to transform present educational thinking. The book presents a wealth of ideas from a wide variety of disciplinary fields and methodological approaches covering multiple learning landscapes—in museums, workplaces, classrooms, places of recreation—in a variety of political, social and cultural contexts around the world. Learning in Places presents the most recent theoretical advances in the field; analyzing the social, cultural, political, historical and economical contexts within which informal learning develops and must be critiqued. It also looks into the epistemology that nourishes its development and into the practices that characterize its implementation; and finally reflects on the variety of educational contexts in which it is practiced.

4 out of 5 stars Good Advice for Teachers.......2006-08-21

This book provides useful advice for teachers from elementary school to high school. There are many ideas for how to develop independence and educational curiosity in students. In particular, it places emphasis on group work and Socratic questions. The key to education is for students to think for themselves. They must do this through critical thinking. Check out this book for some ideas on how to encourage this in the classroom.
