PROPOSAL FOR URGENT ASSISTANCE
Dear Sir: I must solicit your confidence in this transaction. I am a high placed official with the Department of Finance Affairs in Lagos, Nigeria. I and two other colleagues are in need of a silent foreign partner whose bank account we can use to transfer the sum of $18,000,000. This are monies left by a barrister who died tragically in a plane crash last year...
Sound familiar? Congratulations. You have been selected to become a mugu, an expression African con artists use to describe the targets of their e-mail scams. But they drew a bead on the wrong guy when they started spamming Steve H. Graham. Like many Internet users, Graham eventually got tired of receiving mugu mail and decided to fire back at his wannabe swindlers.
Armed with a scathing sense of humor, Graham quickly turned the tables on his tormenters--with side-splittingly hilarious results. Whether he's referring to his fictional lawyer Biff Wellington, complaining about the injury he received while milking a lactating sloth, or offering the Preparation H helpline as his phone number, Graham--using aliases such as Wile E. Coyote, Barney Rubble, and Herman Munster--offers proof that spamming the spammers is the best revenge.
Steve H. Graham is a retired attorney. Since childhood, he has been fighting for truth, justice, and free movie passes. For each copy sold of this book, he will donate 100 percent of the proceeds to himself. He is also the author of the cookbook Eat What You Want and Die Like a Man. He lives in Miami.
Customer Reviews:
Getting bacvk at the Nigerians.......2007-05-08
I often play with Nigerian scammers though not to the extent that the author does. Some of his responses to the scammers email are really funny. A lot like the annals of "The Porcine Princess".
Rude, in the best possible way.......2007-04-06
The Publishers Weekly review above is on the money, in that this book is gleefully offensive.
I'm fine with that.
If you're fine with that as well, this book will make you snort with laughter at inappropriate times. Do not read while sitting in bed next to your sleeping spouse. She will eventually punch you in the chest for waking her up.
It'll be worth the bruise.
FUNNY! FUNNY! FUNNY!.......2007-04-06
A laugh-riot from start to finish--the funniest book I've read in years.
Out of breath funny........2007-03-30
This was one of the funniest books I have enjoyed in a long, long time. The content is fun and light and makes for an easy read. There were times I had tears in my eyes and pain in my stomach from laughing so hard. It's an excellent book for when you need a break from this mad, mad, world.
It's one of those purchases you won't regret.
Highly recommended!
Funny but a little repetitive.......2007-03-30
There are some hilarious pages in this book, some that had me crying and unable to speak. If the author had a little more variety it would have been a great book, but it did seem to repeat its formula in the responses to the email scams after a while.

This is a very funny book that starts from day one of the computer to present times. I liked the many different excerpts from various computer related articles. I especially liked the BOFH articles.

Book Description
Before the term hacking became associated with computers, MIT undergraduates used it to describe any activity that took their minds off studying, suggested an unusual solution to a technical problem, or generally fostered nondestructive mischief. The MIT hacking culture has given us such treasures as police cars and cows on the Great Dome, a disappearing door to the President's office, and the commencement game of "Al Gore Buzzword Bingo." Hacks can be technical, physical, virtual, or verbal. Often the underlying motivation is to conquer the inaccessible and make possible the improbable. Hacks can express dissatisfaction with local culture or with administrative decisions, but mostly they are remarkably good-spirited. They are also by definition ephemeral. Fortunately, the MIT Museum has amassed a unique collection of hack-related pictures, reports, and remnants. Nightwork collects the best materials from this collection, to entertain innocent bystanders and inspire new generations of practitioners.
Customer Reviews:
what about all the failed pranks?.......2006-06-21
Here is an informal romp through decades of MIT pranks. Reflecting well on the ingenuity and craziness of the undergrads who devoted so much time and sweat to making these happen. Most of the pranks revolve around some high tech gimmick. As you follow the narrative, you might admire the unorthodox nature to which technology has been applied.
The only lack in the book is in anecdotes of failed pranks. These could surely comprise a much larger text.
^_^.......2006-02-22
Ok, originally I was trying to buy a book on Asian women in the work force for my Anthropology class. The frist part of the name of this book is the same as the other book so I quickly bought it before I finished reading the rest of the title, so it is all my fault for getting the wrong book. Either way, this book is alot better and more enertaining. Best mistake I ever made ^_^. The book was mailed to my house fast and in great condition.
Great book, but with a caveat........2005-02-01
This is a terrific, fairly comprehensive book of the highlights from MIT's long tradition of pranks. However, if you have already read Journal of the Institute of Hacks, Tomfoolery, and Pranks, you'll find you've read most of this before, and in better detail, with better-reproduced photographs (in my opinion.) The good thing about Nightwork is that this is includes hacks from more recent years than the other book.
For me, the time they spent on the new stuff wasn't nearly enough to justify buying a whole new book, but on its own and to someone who has never read its predecessor, it is an excellent and entertaining history.
And yet, the professor pulls off another Hack ..........2004-12-07
I had a brief opportunity to read this book a while ago. There are plenty of stories about hacks that would make anyone go "why in the name of science these geeks wanted to do that?" And well, you are asking that about people that are pride of being considered geeks. But then again, with this book you will get acquainted with the all-time famous football game between Harvard and Yale where the winner was MIT (??), the 48 unit weight that "cracked" the dome and that the measure of the Harvard bridge is about 364.4 smoots + one ear
And for those of you lucky enough to have established contact with an MIT student/alum, ask them about the secret that lies within the Institute Historian T. F. Peterson and the "hack" that its right there in front of your eyes. Congratulations, you have been hacked.
Interesting Hacks To Fascinate People.......2004-03-15
The Massechussettes Institue of Technology has been host to the leaders of innovations in many fields: Artificial Intelligence, media and communication technology, open source development, and on and on. One of its lesser known areas of bleeding-edge innovation has been pranks and hacking. Well, Institute Historian T. F. Peterson is here to set that straight with Nightwork: A History of Hacks and Pranks at MIT.
Long before the term 'hacking' was associated with computers (and pejoratively by the popular press), it was an MIT institution. MIT undergrads used the term to describe any activity that took their minds off studying and stress. In Nightwork, the best of the best of the history of MIT hacks is documented, photographed, and explained in great detail.
Some of the best (and most visible) hacks at MIT involve The Great Dome. For instance, to celebrate the 2001 release of the movie The Lord of the Rings, MIT hackers made a gold ring around the dome with red Elvish script, "authentically inscribed with Tolkien's text." In the same spirit in 1999, two days before the release of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, the dome was made up to look like R2D2 (pictured below).
Nightwork covers these more obvious hacks as well as the long history of pranks at MIT dating back to the 1940s: Interesting Hacks To Fascinate People. And lest the reader think this is all just mindless fun, a collection of explanitory and philosophical essays is also included.
Even if you're not a hacker or a prankster yourself, hack your bookshelf with Nightwork.

"Warning! This is not serious!" --Kurt Harland.......2004-07-08
Cyberpunk really is dead.. the appearance of the official handbook clinched it. If you want to learn how to hack, don't buy this book. If you want to become a phone phreak, don't buy this book. If you want to become a cypherpunk or a coder, don't buy this book. If you're familiar with the genre of cyberpunk as literature or have had contact with subcultures that could be considered cyberpunk, get this book if you want to get a chuckle or two, or try to recognise some of the folks who posed for this book. If you're looking for net.culture to be lampooned nine ways from Sunday, get this book.

Light and humorous description of the computer underground. Totally the book to get if you are not so serious about hacking and cracking, but are mystified by this offbeat cyberculture. Hell, this book is also cool for a Master CyberPunk, so to bolster the stereotype. Learn how the typical cyberpunk dresses, what gadgets they buy, what terms they use, and even what food good lil cyberpunks like to eat. Piercings and extreme hairdos optional.
3 1/2 sherikins & 3 propeller bennies. Comical & serious........1998-07-16
This is problay the only book of it's kind that isn't flaged by the feds. The style of writting is cool. It gives a how-to approch with out having a step-by-step. You can also tell the authors had a blast!! wrighting the book.

Having Fun with Old-School Computing.......2003-11-27
This book, the first of several from Tennant, was published in 1992, so it deals with a lot of computing issues before the widespread onset of Windows the WWW. I hadn't yet tapped into my inner geek at that time, but for admins and others who fondly remember the days of LANs, early network maintenance, "killer apps" and a host of other topics, this is for you. You can do a lot with one panel of comic space. Great for one-off photocopies to post up on the outside of your server, etc.

Book Description
Computers are those unfathomable contraptions everyone everywhere loves to hate. We can't live with them, but we can't live without them. Contempt for our byte-based existence has developed universal appeal crossing boundaries of culture, economics, religion, and language. Everyone you know has a "those stupid computers" story. If you think you have heard it all, STOP.
The digital revolution began in 1951. Computer Factoids chronicles behind-the-scenes digital weirdness from Day One. Kirk Kirksey covers the landscape of computer history, cyber legend, digital mythology, and Internet lore. Put away your pocket protector because you won't find any techno-babble on these pages. Each of these 39 high-tech yarns is an easy-read with a serious dose of attitude. Whether it is a computer powered by rotting potatoes or a symphony performed by obsolete dot-matrix printers or a computerized bra equipped with a modem, these tales of the digital surreal will make you stand up and shout, "Honey, you're not going to believe this."
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic.......2005-07-28
Kirk's book is great! Chock full of neat facts with delightful originality. A must read for the thinking professional. I am looking forward Kirk's next book!
I never knew..........2005-06-25
Very unusual. A must if computers ever get you down (they really are stupid machines). Brainy and well written.
I liked it so much - I bought the book!.......2005-05-24
Mr. Kirksey has definitely captured the essence of what makes computing entertaining! I'm sure everyone has heard a few of these computer myths and legends -- but Kirk Kirksey tells the "rest of the story." A must read. I borrowed the book and read it on a cross-country airline trip -- liked it so much, I had to buy it!
I couldn't put it down.......2005-05-15
Wow, what a great book. Light reading for a Sunday morning - so good I couldn't put it down. From an explanation of how the Microsoft Windows start-up tune was invented to Dominos Pizza doing marketing research by collecting tons of crumbs from computer keyboards. This is a fascinating book. I really couldn't put it down once I got started. I fully expect to see the author on David Letterman someday. And we'll certainly be hearing some of these stories copied in speeches and articles for some time to come. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Technology may have created a 24/7 work culture, but a handful of savvy white-collar cubicle dwellers are standing up to the "the man" and using these very same (de)vices (the PC, World Wide Web, email and portable gadgets) to make it look like they're working when and where they're not.
The White Collar Slacker's Handbook: Tech Tricks to Fool Your Boss teaches you how to get away with slacking off in a corporate world and not just get away with it but even make it look like you're a dedicated, tireless workaholic at the same time. The White Collar Slacker's Handbook: Tech Tricks to Fool Your Boss also features dozens of sneaky tips, tricks and techniques on how to get away with slacking off. And it's all spelled out in plain English, complete with step-by-step instructions and visuals to help you pull it off without a hitch.
Best of all, in learning how to abuse technology to slack off, this handbook will in fact help you learn more about your PC, popular software and portable devices. How's that for irony?
Customer Reviews:
Funny and Clever.......2005-06-17
I have really enjoyed reading this book. It has some really funny, neat and clever ideas in "sticking it to the man" or boss for that matter.
The techno gadgets of today were supposed to make life easier, but what it's done is elongated our work week. Now, we're expected to work all the time. It never ends...
Well this book, takes a very tongue in cheek approach and will teach you how you can make it look like you are spending those hours working away, when you can be really spending time with the family, at the movies or just plain slacking off.
You'll be caught ..................2005-04-12
Firstly, this book is very entertaining and fun to read. That's why it gests five stars - there is nothing that innovative though. I am a systems auditor - these are the sort of things that make going to work entertaining.
Some of the suggestions are a very quick way to get into trouble - PC anywhere in particular is a high risk product in it's own right - if the security settings are scrwed up. Who is monitoring your network traffic? Do you want them to know what's on your home PC? Have you set up PC anywhere securely?
If I discovered an employee routing (confidential)email outside the company network I'd be more disturbed by the security implications than the employee slacking off. Who at the ISP has access to the email?
The ideas in this book are rather similar to spending a sick day at a ball game, which your boss is watching on TV .... fine until the camera picks you out!
Fun book. Make sure you know your companies policies before you start to play ........

Don't look for the soup of the day in the format menu.......2002-12-19
Once again, Tennant has given us a book with no introduction, afterword, or anything except various strips of _The Fifth Wave_, the cartoon best known for its appearances in various For Dummies books. While some will be familiar to readers of the series, this book contains 126 strips, enough to provide fresh material to most readers.
Even when 'technical' topics are covered, the strips are aimed at a broad audience ('I *swear*, Larry, no one knew there was a compression chip in the virtual-reality helmet!') Topics range from Network Jones and the Lost File of Wendy to the duck hunter who bags a flying toaster, and from Real Programmers to how to tell if you're *not* a cyberholic. Buddy Diskk, Computer Comedian, appears 4 times, more than in later books (Tennant doesn't need to crack jokes to be funny). MousePad Land is going through hard times since the big trakball moved in outside town.
Some strips feature kids, although not as many or quite as clever as in _Downloaded_, the next book. On the other hand, _Version 2.0_ has more strips featuring dogs - the floating pointer benchmark suite is worth seeing. :) _Version 2.0_ even combines dogs with desktop publishing (Rags can now say it his way in a personal greeting card).

A great book for anyone who has ever had a problem with a computer, who knows a techno-person or is one yourself.

Really bad book.......2004-01-27
This is the worst book i've read almost on any subject especially on geeks, first off you can read it in 20 minutes, it has almost no text in it, the size of the margins along with text size gives you from 5-8 words per line with an average of 13 lines per page (did i mention the images?) and 110 pages! (just for kicks check your favorite book and compare)
Not only are there very few words, but the content is so bad, it hardly says anything, it reminds me of some people who are trying to explain something they dont understand, so the say 1,000 words which make no sense... and then spit on your face how knowledgable they are.
For example seccion "1.4.5 Your Geek Child" is 20 lines long (which include 3 sections... features, known bugs and tips... in 20 lines) i'm sure you need more than that to raise your geek child, the worst thing is that later on the book she say's "on how to educate your child go to secction 1.4.5"... like if it actually said something!
Hilarious and helpful.......2003-11-21
Just found this book and it's still current! This woman must have dated or known many a fine geek. Very cute and actually quite helpful in learning how to approach a partner who's more interested in online gaming than getting some fresh air (uh, that would be my Significant Other). I loved the tips on how to help your geek eat better, handle stress, etc. Recommended!!
A very limited book.......2001-09-18
I bought this book because of the excellent references I saw, it took me one day to read it from the beggining to the end, but the book lacks of perspective. Sometimes the writer makes reference of a geek as "she" and jumps in the next sentence to a "he" (or vice versa) without a clearly reason to do this.
It tells you about computer geeks, but never talks about other types of modern geeks and there are a lot of types of them. If you want an aproach of a geek search for the "Geek Code" (not a book) and you can obtain a lot of information.
My last word goes for the little information in a lot of sections (like "Geeks Diet", "The inner geek" and "Your geek's cycles and routines").
I have seen more effort at independent (and free) writtings
Nothing like Stereo Instructions.......2000-12-10
This is a great book, I got one for my girlfriend and she loved it so I got additional copies for the wives and girlfriends of some of my friends. Thus far, everyone has enjoyed it.
The book is well-written, with a light, almost chatty style that really ropes you in and makes you keep reading. It also has an excellent and consistent format, something us geeks love.
Buy it for your non-geek friends so they can better understand you, then buy one for yourself so you can see when they're using the techniques in the book to manage you.
Definative anthropological guide to geeks of all ages.......2000-06-16
This book is that rare and wonderful creation, a humor book that actually gives useful information about a sorely misunderstood segment of today's population. Mikki Halpin addresses the issues that pervade life with a geek, but in a gentle and humorous way without ever sounding patronizing. Now that the geeks run the world, thank god there is miss halpin to show us how to thrive and survive through all of our geek interactions.
