The book is good about protocols and methods but it lacks the real theory underlying modern cryptography.
For a more serious treatment of these topics i recommend "Introduction to modern cryptography" by J. Katz and Y. Lindell (which i read in form of draft) and "Foundations of Cryptography Vol. 1" by O. Goldreich.

I may not intend to read this book from cover to cover but would rather use it as a reference. As an engineer I like chapter 2 Shannon's Theory which gives an answer to why a cryptosytem is secure.

Personally I am doing the job related to network security and perfer to recommend the book by C. Kaufman, R. Perlman, and M. Speciner:Network Security: Private Communication in a Public World, Second Edition.

If you are an engineer trying to learn crypto, maybe get a book on number theory to go with this book. It'd be nice if there were fewer errors and more worked out problems, as well.

Overall a good effort but written by a mathematican so you need a book like Schenier's that explains how to use the tools. Maybe Scheier is the one I'd read first. Then read Stinson's to understand how the tools work because Scheier's book is mathematically barren.

This book takes a fairly rigorous mathematical approach to cryptography. It is intended for upper level undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, computer science and engineering. I suspect only the quite mathematically inclined computer science and engineering students will find this book helpful. This is not a Boy Scout how to do secret messages book, but a book that will give the professional the data needed to implement cryptographic software, and the mathematician hints on both code breaking and creating.

This is the third edition of this book. With the second edition, the author got rid of several several subjects that were not right at the core of cryptography, with the intend of doing a second volume. Instead, the art and scienct of cryptography has changed so fast during the past few years that a two volume approach isn't practical. Instead, he has produced this third edition that picks back up many of the subjects from the first edition. All of the material in this edition has been extensively re-written to incorporate the latest theories and practices.

In recent years the use of cryptography has increased by several orders of magnitude. Every time we buy something with a credit card, use on line banking, send a password to access e-mail, we use cryptography. With this growth, the interest at software companies, universities, and other places has grown accordingly and this text has become the standard by which others are compared.

Highly recommended for the serious student.

3 out of 5 stars Could be a great book .... but it falls short.......2004-05-02

As other people have pointed out, this is not a mathematics book, and it is not an algorithm (recipies) book. It could be a great book for people that are interested in learning these tools to actually use them, either in a research or product development context (something besides homework). Unfortunately, the number of typos, in key mathematical expressions AND PORTIONS OF THE EXPLANATIONS is staggering. Go to the author's web page and you will find that some chapters, like 4 for example, average more than one typo per page (and some of these 'typos' are full sentences, or math expressions that do not look like anything that is actually printed on the page). If you do not have that errata sheet handy, you will waste a lot of time trying to understand the text, or trying to solve the exercises. If you are trying to learn from this book, without attending a class and without the errata, you will simply give up. It is a real shame because it has all the makings of a great book.

It's a pretty good one too, but it's still a college text. The orientation of this book is far more theoretical than practical, complete with abstract mathematical notation that sometimes does more to confuse than to elucidate (although the author, to his credit, includes a glossary of mathematical notation early in the text). Still, the book is complete and up-to-date, covering everything from probability theory and number theory through the latest stuff on PKI, symmetric crypto (including AES), and authentication.

Cryptography is not an easy subject, and this book will take a while to wade through for all but the most mathematically astute readers. Nonetheless, for those wanting a "deep dive" into the theoretical underpinnings of the subject, this is a good book. Security practitioners will likely find Schneier's "Applied Cryptography" an easier, more enjoyable, and equally beneficial read, although it is due for an update.

What's great about Mao's book is that so many aspects of cryptography are covered in an approachable manner and with many good examples.
What's not so great about Mao's book is that it is chock full of errors. There are many mathematical typos. But what really kills this book for me are the ridiculous number of English mistakes - on average about two or three per page. Most mistakes are simple grammatical mistakes that can be re-parsed by the reader on the fly. However, there are more serious errors that make it very difficult to understand the meaning of significant passages and concepts.
Given Mao's refreshing conversational style it's a real shame that Prentice Hall couldn't come up with some decent editing. Hopefully a second edition will fix this.

Cryptography has been around for a long time but a solid introductory crypto book is hard to find. This is one of the best crypto book I have ever bought. Well worth the investment and I am sure it is a book that I can always go back to if I need to look up something. It has a nice number theory chapter but I wish it could be more in depth(provides more proofs). The chapters on public-key crypto and related crypto.techniques are very well written. This book also covers some nice research result one can only found on some research papers(if one cares to dig). I am very impressed with this book! Not too "dry" nor too "elementary!"

The variability in textbook reviews are interesting. I would consider this text "math heavy" whereas other reviewers believe you'll need another serious text on the matter to round out your collection.

I bought this to learn the high level details/processes behind encryption and cryptography but after flipping through the detailed treatment of each, the book got really short, really fast. If you're looking for "Hey here's DES in a nutshell" then this book isn't for you. It is in the sense that the three paragraphs preceding the several-page detailed discussion of the DES algorithm are for you, but the rest isn't.

I was able to use this book as an introduction, and more than an introduction, on the world of cryptography. I started reading it with no knowledge on cryptographic algorithms, ad I learned the principles behind cryptographic algorithms and how they are linked with pratical implementation on security products.

The area of network security is less developed than the cryptography area, but still valuable.

I adored this book! It's one of my favourite texts of all time. I used it for a computer security subject and it's a great primer. It covers a middle ground in computer encryption and network security that serves wonderfully as a primer for the novice and a reference for the experienced.

The contents are roughly evenly split between detailed descriptions of currently used encyrption protocols, and descriptions of network security protocols. For a complete reference library on this field, you would also need a book on network communications protocols, a mathematics-heavy text on the design of encryption algorithms and a programming-heavy text on encryption algorithm implementation.

But if you have prior knowledge of network comms, aren't ineterested in encryption design or maths, and can do the coding yourself, then this book has all you need to understand practical encryption and security currently used in industry and to implement the protocols yourself.

Stallings has a great writing style and explains concepts in clear and interesting English. You can't go wrong with this book. As a primer for the primer, I'd recommend The Code Book by Simon Singh (very readable) or any of Stallings' other books specifically dealing with data comms.

Cryptography and Network Security: Principles and Practice by Stallings is a very good book on crypto.

It is not as detailed as Schneier's Applied Cryptography, but is still a great book.

          The author was a cryptographer working out of Australia during WWW II. This is his personal narrative and an operational history combined. Not definitive because at the time of writing much documentation remained to be declassified. A worthwhile addition to a SIGINT collection.
