1 out of 5 stars Adobe Photoshop CS2 Classroom in a Book.......2007-06-10

This book is the worst photoshop book I have ever used! In almost evey lesson he leaves out intructions. He acts like you did the lesson before. He does eveything the hard way. I hate this book and I would not give it a star. It takes forever to finish and I have to go to my NAPP help to do it the right way. I have not learned anything from this book. Don't buy it. Deb

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-06-09

Along with the disc, the step-by-step instructions to do certain exercises, is just what I needed!!! This book was a requirement for school, and I know I'll be using it for a VERY long time to come!!!

This is an absolute beginner book which serves only as a primer. Look elsewhere if you are looking for a technical, in depth manual.

Outstanding, I teach photography and I use this book and the lessons for my Photoshop class. They are outstanding lessons. It could start out a little more basic but I can get through that on my own.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-05-08

I ordered this book for work so I could gain a better grasp of Illustrator CS 2. So far the book has been very helpful with easy to follow instructions and lessons on a CD. I haven't completed every lesson, but I like what i've learned so far. It lists short cuts too which is a big help!

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT ILLUSTRATOR BOOK.......2007-02-16

Excellent Book for Illustrator.
Very easy to learn with cd-rom.
Highly recomended.

5 out of 5 stars As a beginner, this book helped me a lot.......2007-01-24

Being a newbie in the graphics arts department, I have purchased a few books on the subject (forget the Adobe help section!), and while "CS2 In A Classroom" is more or less "official" Adobe stuff, it is written so that one like myself with just a little experience with Illustrator can duplicate and understand the material, having to "fill in" on occassion when a subject seems to be a bit glossed over. If you're on my level, get the book. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Needed for a graphic design class........2007-01-23

I needed the book asap for a class cheap and fast. The bookstore at campus had the book for 45-50 bux. Amazon had it for 30. I payed 34 total w/ normal shipping. I ordered it on wednesday and got it saturday. Fast shipping. I was ready w/ the book when I had class on Monday. Awesome.

5 out of 5 stars A manual you can use........2007-05-17

I was able to start using logic within minutes of flipping through this book. It is well written and laid out in a user friendly manner. I couldn't get anywhere with the manual, and I am use to reading technical babble. Get this book if you want to start using logic quickly, efficiently, and to its full potential.

4 out of 5 stars Great tutorial - but written for those with experience .......2007-05-10

First let me say that this book (and it's partner Advanced Logic) are extremely useful and turn the "get to know the software" headaches into real pleasures. Having said that, this is obviously written by someone who is so familiar with the software that they take some things for granted that aren't obvious to the first-time user.

All in all though it is well worth the investment and comes with its own set of "songs" that walk one through the various features of the software in a well organized way.

5 out of 5 stars very informative book.......2007-05-07

The manual is fabulous. Logic Express 7 is quite an undertaking to learn and this book is helping out a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Logic Pro & and Logic express.......2007-03-09

I just moved up from Garageband and bought Logic Express. I am a novice producer who wanted to step his game up a little bit. This program is very complicated but this book here guides you through EVERYTHING. I would not waste my time writing this review if i didnt want to tell all of you out there to BUY this book. It is a lifesaver and highly recommended. It is the best 30 or so bucks you can spend compared to the knowledge you will gain. I was just like all of you and thought I could do it alone because Garageband was so easy to learn. Please quit reading these stupid reviews and get this manual. Its fantastic!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Moving from Garage Band to Logic.......2007-01-27

Being a long time user of Garageband, moving to Logic Express with this book has been great. The book moves through sections clearly and explains what needs to be said. I felt comfortable enough to make some real music in Logic after having read this book, and have done some new recordings. If your looking for something more than GarageBand, check this book out to move to the next step.

4 out of 5 stars Provides the building blocks to VFX with Shake........2007-06-27

Four stars. A fifth star would have been earned for a better indexing or cross-reference. Otherwise a top notch, very informative book.

I have experience with film making and with Editing on Final Cut Pro. I was new to VFX, but I'm not anymore after reading this book!

Having seen Shake in action, I wanted to learn more. This books focus on Shake and the fact that a trial version ships with the book is the reason I bought it.

This book is a reference book. It explains, in detail, terms used in the VFX industry (clean plate, matchmoving, etc.) that any filmmaker or budding VFX artist will need to know if even just to communicate clearly with VFX professionals. The entries in the book are punctuated with walk-through tutorials that show you how to accomplish (in Shake) the specific effect. This is a good thing.

I had a project on my suite that needed some pretty hefty FX work. This book armed me with the right concepts and understanding so that I could plan the steps I'd need to take to accomplish the FX. In my case it was turning the request to "Make that person a ghost" into build a clean background plate, rotoscope the actor, invent a ghosty look, and then put it all back together. Until I had read the book and understood the individual steps involved, I didn't know where to begin.

Overall, this is a very informative reference book written in a witty and accessible style. It is VERY Shake oriented, which is, again, WHY I bought it. This is the kind of book an FX pro (or newbie) will reference many times as they work on future projects.

5 out of 5 stars Fine book.......2007-06-07

I was already aware of most of the topics covered in this book, but it helped understand them better and be able to explain accurately to anyone asking. Its also well updated to current industry standards. its in no way complete as an Encyclopedia, needs future voulmes to do that.
In short-A text book for every student of visual effects.

Cons: The DVD files can be accessed only in a MAC (not for PC).

5 out of 5 stars A most complete textbook for VSFX..........2007-03-08

My humble congratulations to the authors who have teamed up with Apple to bring us (my Visual Effects Dept. students and I) a most complete textbook. In my opinion, this book rates in the current top five of all serious resources in the teaching & learning of Visual Effects at the College and Graduate levels. In addition to that, for those of us teaching compositing and matte painting, I would rate this book as the current number one textbook on these topics. A must-read, for a serious student of the Art and Craft of Visual Effects.
Deepest respects,
Prof. Tan TASCIOGLU,
Professor of Visual Effects, Savannah College of Art & Design
SCAD-Atlanta campus.

5 out of 5 stars great reference material.......2007-02-24

great book for beginner to intermediate level vfx artists. the book works exactly as the title says, as an encyclopedia or a reference on how to approach specific problems/challenges that a vfx artist usually faces in production.

4 out of 5 stars Good Contribution.......2007-01-29

For those reviewers who are complaining this book does not cover Adobe After Effects or Final Cut Pro should consider one major fact: the title. It's an Apple book dedicated to Apple software. After Effects (strangely enough) is NOT an Apple product. Furthermore, Shake is Apple's premier visual effects software, and promoting it is in their interests. People are glued to either Final Cut Pro or After Effects (I find both endearing and quite wonderful), and Shake is left out in the dust, even though it offers many aspects other software cannot.

In any case, the book doesn't cover EVERYTHING but it does enough. If you want a step-by-step guide to all the possible effects, I suggest you write your own book after years of experience. Or, you can spend $500 for a collection of books which will undoubtably cover many of the same topics.

This book is a good find. Won't disappoint you if your expectations aren't unreasonable.

Book Description

With its ever-tightening integration with Adobe's full suite of creative products and its own increasingly sophisticated feature set, InDesign is winning legions of Quark and FrameMaker converts. If you’re among them–or if you've decided to sidestep those programs altogether–you need this book. In these pages, the Adobe Creative Team uses a series of project-based lessons to provide a thorough grounding in the InDesign school of page design. You'll find step-by-step lessons in InDesign CS2 fundamentals plus plenty of the advanced tips and techniques you need to take your page designs to the next level. The workbook-style format includes self-paced lessons followed by review questions to reinforce the knowledge and a CD with all of the files required to complete the book's projects. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very helpful.......2007-05-09

I am a convert from PageMaker, so I was already familiar with a lot of the functions in InDesign. However, the book has still been very beneficial. The examples and already finished or almost finished documents that come on the disc are great tools to learn with.

The book is easy to read, despite being written by Adobe. Sometimes the only way to learn is to buy a book written by a third party, but I've found that is not the case here. Adobe did a great job.

1 out of 5 stars What about CS3?.......2007-04-21

I'm only giving it 1 star because CS3 has now been released, so the book is of modest value except for those who wish not to take advantage of the new and improved. Try taking this one to a used book store and you'll see that at "1" it's over-rated.

Aside from that, this is an excellent series of manuals, particular valuable as software publishers no longer include manuals! As they say at O'Reilly: "The book that should have been in the box."

5 out of 5 stars Adobe InDesign CS2 Classroom in a Book.......2007-03-15

This book is extremely helpful with the Adobe InDesign program I wish I would have had it a year ago!!

5 out of 5 stars Esencial para básicos e intermedios.......2007-01-12

Great text for learning image processing and using it with MATLAB. Hopefully the instructor also uses its mathematical insight as well.

5 out of 5 stars Superb instructional book for my needs.......2006-04-10

I bought this book for two reasons (a) I needed an overview of IP and (b) I wanted to examine different pattern analysis algorithms with a practical twist. On both counts, as an non-IP researcher, I was very satisfied. The book is very well laid out, so well in fact that it would put to shame many of its rivals. It served my needs. I can't comment on whether it will meet the needs of a broader community. I would certainly recommend it based on my experience.

This book educates the reader in image processing and MATLAB. While I am experienced in both, I found the book to be an extrememly useful reference book for projects involving image compression and image representation. The book offered practical descriptions and useful code for computing the fast wavelet transform. It was especially useful in describing how the edges should treated. This is a big issue that other textbooks gloss over. I had never seen it described in a textbook, and it was described so well.

The color image processing chapter is excellent, and the image processing chapter is pretty good. Lots of explanation and code.

While the book stands alone, it can also be seen as a useful companion book to the more theoretical "Digital Imaging Processing" by Gonzalez and Woods (2nd edition). This is a different book even though it has close to the same name.

5 out of 5 stars The best of its kind........2005-01-02

If you want to get up to speed on Matlab and plan to use it for image processing, this book is a must.

I have lots of experience in computer graphics and in programming languages like C++ and C#, but prior to reading this book I had never really used Matlab nor implemented complicated image processing algorithms. This book is a great introduction to both.

The book is divided in twelve chapters touching both low-level image processing (e.g. spatial filtering) and higher-level concepts required for computer vision, like image registration and segmentation. Gonzalez et al are talented writers, explaining relatively complicated concepts clearly and concisely, without getting lost in the mathematical details. People interested in the more theoretical aspects should (and probably already have) check their other book.

The only potential downside of this book is that it's definitely designed to be read sequentially, one chapter at a time. The matlab concepts are introduced piece by piece. For example, if you skip Chapter 5 (on image restoration, i.e. getting rid of noise) you may not realize that you missed the introduction to the image registration functions. Personally I liked this style (it added variety to a potentially dry subject), but a reader with less time to cover all of the matter may find this to be a problem.

5 out of 5 stars Digital image processing using MATLAB.......2004-09-02

I gave a DIP class last semester using this book. I found it provided the easiest way to make students acquainted with DIP. Before using this book, I tried Visual C++ for implementation. However, both of us (i.e., students and me) couldn't be satisfied, I guess. Now the implementation is easier than ever, and I can explain more about DIP itself to students.

5 out of 5 stars Really good start for learning Final Cut Pro 5........2007-04-08

Anyone aspiring to be an director needs to be a good editor first. You need to understand how the film will be put together so that you can plan your shots, actors, special effects, music etc. Editing is the final part, where everything comes together. The best editing work is only as good as the sum of the components - story, acting, photography, sound effects, music, etc. When all these things come together with great editing, there is the potential for a great property.

Final Cut Pro (FCP) is an industry player in film editing. The price of Final Cut Studio (Final Cut Pro is part of this package) is cheap for professionals and within reach of the serious hobbyist. By serious I mean you don't just by the starter kit and then put it on the shelf. Make no mistake FCP is very functional, and it is entirely probable that you will be fully intimidated by the plethora of options available to you. This is where the "Apple Pro Training Series: Final cut Pro 5" comes in. Don't expect to be the next Tony Scott or Steven Spielberg yet. That can't be done in any book. It will however, give you enough grounding to start experimenting with FCP with confidence.

Do all the chapter exercises in order and don't skip any. I don't recall any errors, which is rare. I can't recommend this book enough.

Book Description

Written by Stu Maschwitz, co-founder of the Orphanage (the legendary guerrilla visual effects studio responsible for amazing and award-winning effects in such movies as Sin City, The Day After Tomorrow, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), this book is a must-have for all those budding filmmakers and students who want to produce action movies with visual effects but don't have Hollywood budgets. The Orphanage was created by three twenty-something visual effects veterans who wanted to make their own feature films and discovered they could do this by utilizing home computers, off the shelf software, and approaching things artistically. This guide details exactly how to do this: from planning and selecting the necessary cameras, software, and equipment, to creating specific special effects (including gunfire, Kung Fu fighting, car chases, dismemberment, and more) to editing and mixing sound and music. Its mantra is that the best, low-budget action moviemakers must visualize the end product first in order to reverse-engineer the least expensive way to get there. Readers will learn how to integrate visual effects into every aspect of filmmaking--before filming, during filming and with "in camera" shots, and with computers in postproduction. Throughout the book, the author makes specific references to and uses popular action movies (both low and big-budget) as detailed examples--including El Mariachi, La Femme Nikita, Die Hard, and Terminator 2.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it. Read it. Make a better movie........2007-06-27

So you want to make a low budget (digital) action movie, right? Buy this book. Read it. OK, now you are going to either make a better movie, or spend less money doing it. It's really that simple. I work on low budget movies in Brazil, and when we say "low budget" we mean it; this book is a must-read piece of wisdom and inspiration. Not the most comprehensive, but sure to give you the right directions. In short, best 30 bucks I've ever spent on a filmmaking book (and I have spent a lot). Thank you Stu Maschwitz, for sharing all of this with us.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK STINKS!!!!.......2007-06-11

Ha, made you look. The heading was just an optical illusion designed to get you to read my review. As one reviewer put it, this is THE BOOK if you want a useful bible on doing action movies on a low budget. Just the introduction alone got me into it and I have not been able to put it down. Other reviewers pretty much sum up the meat of the beast. Just pick it up and read.

My only regret is that this book didn't come out in 2003, when I first started working on my own action low-budget (no-budget) flick and I'm still working on principle photography to this day. But then, it probably would've been a different beast. Also, it's primarily about After Effects 7, but I use After Effects 5.5 and 6.5. I'm sure I can still apply a lot of what he is talking about to these earlier versions though. I am so glad I got this book.

4 out of 5 stars Tarentino better watch out........2007-06-09

This book gives the reader a great foothold in the world of action movie production. Effects, stunts, digital compositing, storyboarding, etc. It comes with a DVD of examples of the author's work and useful explanations of different effects from key action sequences as well as some files the reader can use in their own material. Plenty of useful information.

5 out of 5 stars THE book.......2007-06-08

What a book! I think all has been said about it. If you like movies, if you like vfx&sfx, want to learn how to do it? Then you must buy this book.
Stu did a wonderful job of writing even complex stuff easy to read and understand. If he writes another book I will buy it based on the impression this book has left on me.

4 out of 5 stars The title says it all.......2007-06-08

This is a great book, especially if you're just starting out. The narrative is friendly and easy to follow, and the DVD is loaded with extras (including the author's own film). It is, as the title says, an all digital approach to filming, editing in particular. This book isn't like others, in that it's strategy for keeping costs low is by teaching the filmmaker how to create nice production value using digital tricks in post. Nevertheless, there are tons of tips for the actual filmmaking process (great section about the dreaded airsoft problem). This is nice because it turns the book into a field guide as well. However, some of the sections are a little vague, often leaving the reader to figure out how he should go about creating an effect. Example: in the "Cleaveland for Paris" section the author talks about how to use digital mattes to create exotic backdrops for your film. But that's all he says. He never talks about just how one would go about doing this. That said, there is still a lot of great information that everyone can find useful, even if you do have to pick your way through it.

1 out of 5 stars Not a Classroom in a book. More like a presentation........2007-01-25

This book is not about creating PDF documents from scratch. It is about converting an already existing document into a PDF file. It focuses on converting Microsoft Office files (Windows) to PDF, converting Microsoft Office files (MAC) to PDF, converting other files to PDF, converting paper forms to PDF, etc. It also focuses on how to combine multiple forms into a single document.

It presents simple views for addressing tasks and does not go into much detail. It shows one way of doing things and does not cover any exceptions or problems a user might encounter.

The three pages in the book on capturing data and handling it after is primitive and not useful instruction.

It does not show how to create a document from scratch. The chapter on using the Designer is only 50 pages and is also a high level view.

5 out of 5 stars Introductory.......2006-10-05

One hopes that the publisher of an application would make the best author for it, and while that is not always the case, this one did not disappoint. This book assumes no prior knowledge and walks the reader meticulously through all the features of Acrobat Standard and Professional for both Windows and OS X. This is an introductory book and so experienced folks should look elsewhere.

The chapters correlate to the lessons on the included CD with screen shots from both OS X and Windows to demonstrate the consistency between the two interfaces. There are chapters/lessons for technical drawing, professional publishing, security features like digital signatures and PDF certification, embedding of multimedia in presentations, and how to generate PDFs from scanned pages or any application with a Print function.

Forms design and creation are major uses of Acrobat, for which there are two chapters - one on the built-in forms tools and another on the more advanced Adobe LiveCycle Designer which offers a richer design and development environment. Adobe LiveCycle Designer is currently only included with the Windows version of Acrobat Professional, but a trial version can be downloaded from Adobe. Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Classroom in a Book is aptly named and provides a good introduction to Acrobat.

Adobe's website is a complementary source for eSeminars, tips and tutorials, user forums, developer links, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice book.......2006-02-28

It is a comprehensive step by step book. I liked the fact that it also included alternative instructions for the instances when a Mac would have different commands.

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but not at all if you prepare for the exam.......2005-12-30

The book was overall a good book with all what you need to know about Adobe Acrobat. I am preparing for the exam and the book does not cover 75% of the test. Unfortunately Adobe did not think of this and decided to make it very hard for us. Microsoft on the other hand has many books that cover the topics for their exams. Wish Adobe would learn that one thing from them....

4 out of 5 stars Good book for beginners.......2005-08-29

I found the tutorials easy to use and thought they taught how to use Acrobat very well. Some items may get repetitive if you have purchased other CS2 books, but I recommend it for anyone that purchases Adobe Acrobat CS2.

Book Description

PowerShell replaces cobbled-together assemblies of third-party management tools with an elegant programming language and a powerful scripting shell for the Windows environment. In the tradition of Manning's ground breaking "In Action" series, this book comes from right from the source. Written by Bruce Payette, one of principal creators of PowerShell, Windows PowerShell in Action shows you how to build scripts and utilities to automate system tasks or create powerful system management tools to handle the day-to-day tasks that drive a Windows administrator's life. Because it's based on the .NET platform, PowerShell is also a powerful tool for developers and power users.

Windows PowerShell in Action was written by Bruce Payette, one of the founding members of the Windows PowerShell team, co-designer of the PowerShell language and the principal author of the PowerShell language implementation. The book enables you to get the most out of the PowerShell environment. Using many examples, both small and large, this book illustrates the features of the language and environment and shows how to compose those features into solutions, quickly and effectively.

This book is designed for anyone who wants to learn PowerShell and use it well. Rather than simply being a book of recipes to read and apply, this book gives you the deep knowledge about how PowerShell works and how to apply it.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about PowerShell.......2007-05-12

I don't ever remember reading a computer book from cover to cover, but I got hooked on this book and "can't put it down"... Plus, who ever thought that the history of a program could be as interesting as this one is. After all, the book begins by asking "why another shell language?" By the time you are into a few chapters you realize the question should have been "what took you so long?"

The book is peppered with valuable code examples that show off everything from the basics to the most advanced concepts, and the examples are built incrementally so you can see how and why every character in a command line works. Since PowerShell is object oriented, you easily learn why this is important, and how to extract the power of an OO shell.

I've already put PowerShell to work at the office using it for WMI, Active Directory, and file management tasks and have incorporated it into my AutoIT scripts as well. This book was a great help in getting me up to speed as fast as I have.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book!.......2007-03-30

This is a great book for those wanting to learn not only how, but why.

5 out of 5 stars Of Scripts and Cmdlets.......2007-03-23

This is _the_ PowerShell book.

A well written technical reference with an in-depth journey into PowerShell's design.
This book reads more like good fiction than tech, which may be caused, in part, by the disbelief of the things possible with PowerShell.
Payette's style is honest, insightful, passionate and funny.

favorite quote: "Dude! Where's my code?" (chapter 1.4)

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable! How To Use the Powershell Language Effectively.......2007-03-21

The remarkable thing here is that they got the actual inventor of the powershell language and convinced him to write a book.

It's so packed full of good stuff that I wish Microsoft would ship the book, free, with every download of Powershell.

The title 'Powershell In Action' doesn't really give you a clue about just how good this book is. The title is just so that it fits in with Manning's (very good) range of 'In Action' books. But the focus here isn't on action -- it's on really **REALLY** getting to know the language used in Powershell.

Page after page, be astounded at the versatility of this language! Gasp in awe at the wise decisions that were made which allow the language to seemingly read your mind!

There is depth here that you cannot possibly find anywhere else. No one else would know the things Bruce Payette knows.

5 out of 5 stars Do not stop at think, go straight to buy and read........2007-02-28

Where's the 6 stars option? I haven't enjoyed a software engineering book to the same extent for a long time. 'PowerShell in Action' works on two levels. Firstly it delivers immediately in getting you up to speed on PowerShell and being able to use it in-anger for simple tasks (and from there on it just gets better and better as it tackles more complex scenarios).

Secondly however it's not just a 'What' and 'How' tutorial, but also guide to 'Why'. Since Bruce was the design lead for the actual PowerShell language only he can tell you why they choose to implement features the way they did. On this level the book reads like one engineer talking to another. It gives you a fantastic insight into the thought processes behind the choices (what alternatives where considered, and discarded, and why).

The text is full of Bruce's entertaining and sly asides which make it clear that here's a guy that's quite possibly used every language on the planet. As a reader you get the clear impression that nothing in PowerShell is there out of whimsy. And when you start working through the book you'll get a real impression of how every feature of it hangs together and supports the whole. Get this book.
