Book Description
O'Reilly's Pocket Guides have earned a reputation as inexpensive, comprehensive, and compact guides that have the stuff but not the fluff. Every page of Linux Pocket Guide lives up to this billing. It clearly explains how to get up to speed quickly on day-to-day Linux use. Once you're up and running, Linux Pocket Guide provides an easy-to-use reference that you can keep by your keyboard for those times when you want a fast, useful answer, not hours in the man pages. Linux Pocket Guide is organized the way you use Linux: by function, not just alphabetically. It's not the 'bible of Linux; it's a practical and concise guide to the options and commands you need most. It starts with general concepts like files and directories, the shell, and X windows, and then presents detailed overviews of the most essential commands, with clear examples. You'll learn each command's purpose, usage, options, location on disk, and even the RPM package that installed it. The Linux Pocket Guide is tailored to Fedora Linux--the latest spin-off of Red Hat Linux--but most of the information applies to any Linux system. Throw in a host of valuable power user tips and a friendly and accessible style, and you'll quickly find this practical, to-the-point book a small but mighty resource for Linux users.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent reference.......2007-03-25
This book is exactly the type of excellent work one comes to expect from O'Reilly. Tons on useful information in a handy pocket reference size. I bought it because I had been away from Linux for awhile and was rusty on all of the commands. This filled the bill perfectly.
good handbook.......2007-03-17
A good, standard handbook for Fedora and other Linux flavors. A good reference when you already know the OS and need a reference back to refresh your memory on command syntax, etc
Great Product!.......2007-03-08
This book has helped me to have a better understanding of the Linux commands.
Best reference book for Linux.......2007-01-15
This is the second copy of this book that I have. It is true that in the latest distributions of Linux (Suse 10, Fedora 6 or Ubuntu 6.+) you do not need to enter almost any command via the terminal, but there are two main reasons to learn to use the terminal line:
1. you want to become a power user and customize your linux distro, or
2. as an open source system, you are likely to broke something trying to install the latest applications, as Beryl for example, and you broke the graphical server.
In both cases, this book is a must have.
You can have access the same (or more) information via the 'man' command, but is useful to have some writen examples on how to use some commands. This book is very well organized and the size is really 'pocket'. It is a little outdated (2004) and oriented to Fedora (I'm an Ubuntu user), but useful anyway.
If you own one reference book for Linux, this should be it........2007-01-06
I am a linux newbie, though I have an extensive computer background in other operating systems, and I wanted a comprehensive, yet brief reference book for Linux. This is indespensible! I have other detailed, how-to Linux books, but this is the one I continue to use on a regular basis. THe book is arranged in a very logical way, and the table of contents in conjunction with the index allows me to quickly find the command I need. Essentially all Linux commands are included, and for a given command, the most commonly used options are explained.
If I need more detail, and I infrequently do, I can go to those other books, or most likely I just use Linux available documentation (command help, man pages, etc.)
Alot of information for just a few bucks -- again, indispensible!

Excellent firewall book.......2005-04-26
What I was looking for in this was a book explaining IPTABLES. What I got was much more. The book starts with overall theory and firewalls in practice, basics off the major network protocols, TCP, UDP, and then moves into the how-to's and breaks down the iptables commands. Script examples are great, already put some of his suggestions into practice.
Would recommend to anyone building a Linux firewall.
Great Book on Linux Firewalls.......2003-09-26
I wish this book was released a year ago! I spent a great deal of time and energy figuring how to set up and configure a Linux IPTABLES firewall. I did it the hard way. I dug up information from many sources and finally accomplished my mission.
This beauty of this book is that the author has put everything you need in one place. It gives the reader a good conceptual understanding of the concepts and then goes into detail on how to build your firewall. It also contains actual IPTABLES code that you can use with little modification.
Great book! Thanks Bill.
Good book - Lousy support.......2003-09-08
The book was very informative. However after finishing it, I was stupified to discover that there is no online errata and/or script download site. (Or if there is one, it is sure hard to find). It seems that Wiley and "RedHat Press" are hopelessly behind the times. This is a serious flaw in an otherwise very useful book.
Bill is the coolest!.......2003-05-12
Although I am not finished this book, halfway, I feel compelled to review it. The book has great humor, good info, and makes a very dry read interesting. Although it does not go into great detail on implementing firewalls in the real world, it does have all you need to get moving on your own. I wish that it covered implementation in greater detail but then again most linux guys want to "feel" smarter by figuring it out on their own.
great desc of ipchains & iptables!.......2003-01-14
I was looking for a good book on iptables and this book exceeded my expectations. RedHat Firewalls provides a great description of ipchains, iptables, and also some good sample scripts. In the past, I used the 'Linux Firewalls' book, but if you're running RedHat systems, this is the book for you.
Half of the book was 'into to firewalls' stuff, which may come in handy for someone new to firewalls entirely. I would have preferred more info on troubleshooting.

Book Description
The GNU/Linux® success story is well known. Firmly established as a high-performance operating system, its worldwide installations are increasing at phenomenal rates. Much of this success has been on the server side, but more and more PC users are turning to Linux on the desktop, as well. For those grounded in Microsoft Windows® or Apple Macintosh® graphical interfaces, the first look at a powerful Unix-style operating system can be daunting. This book provides a clear, no-nonsense introduction to the popular Red Hat® distribution of Linux. It takes you through installation and shows you the key parts of the system, always with an eye toward what can go wrong and what you need to know to get over the humps. Linux is known as a secure environment and a good platform to run a web server. These topics are among the many covered in this book. But did you know you can also burn CDs, sync a PalmPilot™, and edit slideshow presentations with powerful tools on Linux? Those topics are covered here, too. Red Hat currently provides two distributions, both documented in this book. The first is their commercial, subscription-based product, called Red Hat Enterprise Linux and also available through retail channels as Red Hat Professional Workstation. The second is the freely distributed Fedora distribution. The Publisher's Edition of Fedora is included in this book on two disks. New in this edition are installation instructions for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora, package updating for Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora, information on the GRUB bootloader, and the CUPS printer system. Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora tells you how to:
- Prepare your system for installing Linux
- Install and configure Linux and the two popular desktop environments, GNOME and KDE.
- Run the most popular productivity tools on Linux: mailers, web browsers, OpenOffice, and Evolution.
- Obtain and set up software through the Red Hat Package Manager (RPM)
- Set up a Linux system for networking, either on your local area network (LAN), or via a dialup connection to the Internet.
- Use the system-administration tools included with Red Hat, GNOME, and KDE, including such valuable utilities as Samba file-sharing and the Apache web server.
- Understand and write shell scripts so you can peek under the hood and extend the power of Linux.

Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Fedora, Fourth Edition.......2005-07-12
I found this book to be very readable and a good way of getting up to speed on Linux. The book: (i) guides you how to load Fedora onto your computer, (ii) describes how Linux works, and (iii) discusses Linux applications, networking and scripts. The author also touches on the Red Hat Enterprise version of Linux throughout the text. The Linux installation section is well written with plenty of screen shots showing the various screens during installation. The other sections are also very readable. The book comes with a couple of CDs containing Fedora Core1. A reader may wish to download a more recent version (Fedora 4 is available at the time this review was written). This book is a good springboard in getting into the Linux world with Fedora; however I think that a person will want to supplement this book with a reference on Linux (such as Linux in a Nutshell) in order to get a more detailed coverage on topics.
Perfect for what I was looking for..........2004-10-04
In my quest to learn Linux, I've been working through the book Learning Red Hat Enterprise Linux & Fedora by Bill McCarty (O'Reilly). This is exactly what I was looking for in a learning guide.
Chapter list: Why Run Linux?; Preparing to Install Linux; Installing Linux; How Linux Works; Using the GNOME and KDE Desktops; Using Linux Applications; Conquering the bash Shell; Installing Software Using the RPM Package Manager; Configuring and Administering Linux; Connecting to the Internet; Setting Up Network Services; Advanced Shell Usage and Shell Scripts; Linux Directory Tree; Principal Linux Files; Managing the Boot Process; Linux Command Quick Reference; Index
This book concentrates more on the desktop and graphical interface aspect of running Linux, which is exactly what I was looking for. While this book won't tell you everything you need to know about any specific subject (like shell programming or networking), it covers more than enough to get you up and running with a complete Linux setup. Using this volume, I've been able to get a full desktop and server setup going with little effort or trouble. By following the rest of the book, I'll gain a solid base of knowledge of Linux, and then I'll be ready to move on to more detailed learning.
Perfect level of coverage for where I'm at, and enough detail to get me up and running quickly... I like it.
Can't rate because it did not meet my needs.......2004-09-27
I wanted a book that could help me with fedora in TEXT MODE. This book looked great and obviously, books from Oreilly are always good so I bought it.
This book is absolutely NOT a good book to learn Fedora in TEXT MODE because the book is about graphic mode and it wasn't said somewhere. It's all about GNOME and KDE.
Be sure you use the graphic mode before buying!
End-user level introduction to Linux.......2004-08-10
From the title I would have suspected something about building scalable Linux servers for web applications. Turns out the book is nothing like that. It's a ground up introduction to Linux from the end-user perspective. It starts in Windows with prepping a system for Linux installation, works through the installation (replete with lots of screenshots), then goes into the basics of window managers and Linux Office-style applications. The last few chapters go into some depth on working in the shell and shell scripting, but it's pretty light.
This is a solid introduction to end-user level Linux that should be suitable for anyone who is reasonably technical (no need to be a programmer). The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is because of the reliance on numerous screenshots, which isn't the best way to explain things, and is not the quality that I expect from O'Reilly.
Good intro to Fedora.......2004-06-25
My recommendation is, this is a good book for a Linux novice or someone starting with Fedora for the first time.
Those with experience, will probably want to pass on this book. Its not likely you'll pick up anything new
(I didn't). (For those unfamiliar with what Red Hat has done with the split out of Fedora; think of
Fedora Core 1 as Red Hat Linux 9.1 or 10; if Red Hat had continued the product line.)
This book focuses on the "NEW" Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Fedora Core 1 Linux user. The book is a relatively
easy read. Bill McCarty writes a clear and well organized book. From a novice's perspective, the author gives
you, what you need to get Fedora installed, running and usable. The author does a good job of pointing
the reader at additional information sources on each topic. The book is short, less than 300 pages.
This is nice compared to some of the other 1,000 page plus Linux novice tomes; which try to be a "how to get
started" book and a "general reference" all at they same time; except they don't do either well. Linux should
be friendly, not scary. First timers shouldn't have to read a Encyclopedia to get started in Linux. I agree
with the author's choice of brevity for his book.
One suggestion to the author, would be to include output examples with the CLI (Command Line Interface) examples.
He does it with the GUIs, so why not with the CLIs???
I bought the book because "Red Hat Enterprise" (RHE) was in the title. I was disappointed in the fact there wasn't
more detail about RHE. In retrospect, anyone doing RHE, is probably an experienced Linux person working for a
company, where RHE is deployed and may even have had formal training on RHE. So why would they need this book?
My bona fides; I've been using been using various flavors of Unix for an embarrassing long time, Red Hat Linux
for 8 yrs (from release RH 3.0.3 to 9) and I have been running Fedora Core for about 5 months now.
Average customer rating:
- Not a great guide, not really great.
- No experience necessary
- Right at my level
- Very good book

Customer Reviews:
Not a great guide, not really great........2007-02-02
If I could I would give this book two and a half stars, but 2 will do. I am a complete noob when it comes to Linux and got this book for class. The book is getting really outdated. I had several different problems installing fedora and it was no hope. Not a great guide for a true beginner but makes a decent reference. I like a lot of examples when starting something new and the examples in this book are lacking. For being 1,000 pages its surprising what is left out.
No experience necessary.......2006-03-08
I have been working in a Windows IT environment for over 7 years, but had no Linux experience except for installing it on a test machine (but then again, even a 5 year-old could install it since it's so easy). But I never had to work with it in an enterprise level until now. Without any solid experience with Linux and armed only with this book (and 7 years of "figuring it out" IT skills), I managed to get Redhat ES v3 running on an old server class machine with an older RAID controller. I even got it to talk to Windows clients AND the old HP-UX servers (I didn't have Unix experience either!). The boss was impressed! This is an excellent book that doesn't get annoying (like those Dummies books) or pretends to be a "Linux Admin book for Beginners" like that other book that's out there. I started with an older version of this book from the library, and this new version is even better. This book is a great investment and I'm glad I bought it.
Right at my level.......2005-10-19
Now in its third edition along with a DVD that includes Full Fedora Core 4, the latest (as of 10/18/05). People have complained that this book (in its earlier editions) are too simplified and beginnerish. I guess then that I'm not enough of a guru to go to something more advanced.
I find the background that this book gives is exactly at the level I need. Some books that simply say 'type this in.' Other books take a few hundred pages to explain what's happening at a level where I've forgotten the question by the time I get to the end of the description. This book is positioned at a nice level inbetween. I know what to type in and I have some understanding of why.
I further like the writing style and the way they use bold face, 'Notes' and 'Tips' to emphasize things. These features enable me to find out what I need more quickly. Finally, there are additions from the earlier editions which explain things that caused questions or were left out.
I'd rank this as an intermediate level book. It's not a here's how to start with Linux book. Nor is it an in great depth geek level book. I guess I like it so well, because it's at about the level I need.
Very good book.......2005-02-10
Very good book with lots of information, but sometimes the author gets carried away with his so-called version of MAN pages. If you need more detail on some stuff, you will need to reference some other book or check online. The book did have some errors and wrong diagrams, just wished someone have proof read it better....
Great Reference.......2005-02-05
Don't listen to any reviews on this page that are dated before 2004 as they refer to the first edition of this book. The second edition covers RH Enterprise. What I like about this book is that it doesn't have all the "fluff" found in may sys. admin. books. By fluff I mean, introductions to basic commands, piping, ect. The System Administration sections contain a lot of little, specific details that most books simply don't include. Overall, an excellent reference book.
Average customer rating:
- Good but for immediate or better users
- Good RH reference Freely available info is just as good
- Obviously trying to cash in on Red Hat's dominance
- Horrible Error Proofing!

Book Description
Red Hat Linux Security and Optimization is a reference for power-users and administrators covering all security issues, including Filesystems Security, Securing root accounts and Firewalls. Other Security books talk about how to apply certain patches to fix a security problem -- but this book shows you how to secure all applications so that the chances for a security breach are automatically minimized. Application performance benchmarking will also be covered. This book introduces you to many application-specific performance and benchmarking techniques and shows you how to tune your computer as well as your networks. This book covers all the primary Red Hat Linux Applications such as Apache Web Server, WuFTP, FTP server, BIND DNS server, Sendmail SMTP server and focuses on how to enhance security for each of them. It also shows you how to secure NFS and Samba Server, as well as the Apache Web Server.
Customer Reviews:
Good but for immediate or better users.......2003-01-28
I want to begin with whats good about the book. It does a good job of covering Linux security concepts, and centralizing them in a well laid out, easily referenced book. Others have pointed out that a lot of this information is available on the net for free, however without a reference like this they wouldn't know what they should be looking for. (How many folks know their BIND server should run in a chroot environment to even begin the research?).
Despite having Red Hat in its title, and being released as a redhat Press book, the book is surprisingly generic in its treatment. While that may be a welcome releif to Suse/Debian/etc users, its a bit annoying to redhat users who were expecting more specific help, and perhaps less conflicting help. Several of the security measures covered in the book have already been implemented in the default redhat install, except using different usernames, file paths, etc.
Some of this may be an artifact of the book not covering the latest release, but some have been around long enough to convince me the book was written to a far more generic audience originally then given a new title. Which isn't bad by itself, just not what a novice user would expect, and might not catch.
My final concern is that some of the implementation steps are just flat wrong. The section on running BIND in a chroot environment is one, it describes the process in 7 steps (only 6 are enumerated) and does not mention redhat's prefered method of passing the options to the daemon. However, since knowing that it should/can be done is half the battle in linux, the correct procedure can be found on the web.
Good RH reference Freely available info is just as good.......2002-12-27
A doctrine of the open source movement is that although the software is free, you have to pay for the support and documentation. While anyone can ..get the Red Hat Linux software for free, books on Linux or other open source topics will cost the reader money. But for readers who are willing to shell out [the money]for a book about Linux security, Red Hat Linux Security and Optimization is a good overview on the core concepts of Linux security and how to secure, optimize, and harden Red Hat.
The book is titled Red Hat Linux Security and Optimization, indicating that both topics are covered, but the bulk of this book (chapters 8 - 21) really deals with security topics. Only the first 7 chapters deal with system and network performance.
Part 1 of the book comprises three chapters on system performance. Issues such as performance basics and kernel tuning are discussed. It shows how users can compile and install their own custom kernel. Chapter 3 is on file system tuning and deals with standard issues such as determining which file system to use and the creation of volumes and partitions.
The three chapters of Part 2 (Network and Service Performance) detail the issues of network and server performance. Chapter 5 provides a good overview of tweaking Apache and the use of Squid.
Part 3, System Security, is the heart of the book. The author takes a bottom up approach to security, where he starts with kernel security and progresses to other topics such as file system security, network security, passwords, and more.
Part 4 details network security, from DNS and BIND, to SSL, FTP, and the other major networking protocols. Chapter 17 has a good synopsis of email and the vulnerabilities associated with open email gateways, and how to control mail relays so as not to be used as a spam clearinghouse.
The book finishes with Part 5, which comprises two chapters about Linux firewalls. It also includes information about VPNs, SSL tunnels, and assessment tools.
The enclosed CD-ROM has a lot of security software, including standard security tools such as John the Ripper, netcat, nessus, nmap, and more. Is also includes other software such as Tripwire, Saint, OpenSSH, OpenSSL, tcpdump, and more. Also included is an electronic version of the book. With the exception of the electronic copy of the book, everything on the CD-ROM is available free off the Net. It would have been nice if the book could have included a second CD-ROM with the Linux operating system software. Although the software can be downloaded from Red Hat, the nearly 1 GB of data can take quite a while to download, even with a broadband connection.
Red Hat Linux Security and Optimization is a straightforward book that details all of the rudiments of Linux functionality and security. While the book is written for Red Hat, the majority of the information can be applied to other flavors of Linux. Overall, Red Hat Linux Security and Optimization is a good option for readers who want a security reference book....
Obviously trying to cash in on Red Hat's dominance.......2002-12-22
Red Hat is synonymous to Linux for many people, and this book is obviously trying to cash in on that. The editing of this book leaves much to be desired - there are some really terrible errors throughout. I am usually partial to books that have CDs with them, but in this case it doesn't add anything. The tools on the CD are freely downloadable from the internet, and are being updated constantly. The versions on the CD are very old, so you need to download new versions anyway.
Overall, for my money, I'd buy the oreilly security book or the hacking linux exposed one.
Horrible Error Proofing!.......2002-07-05
This book has so many flaws I would not recommend it to my enemy. The scripts are totally useless!! You have to rewrite them completely, and no what you are doing beforehand. If I knew what I was doing beforehand, I wouldn't need the book! I can't believe a publisher would let something as bad as this go to press. I don't normally criticize books, but this was too much. If I could rate it a negative, believe me, I would this doesn't even deserve a 1. Maybe I'm just talking about a small section and the rest is good, but I don't need the rest. Microsoft ships products with LESS bugs in them then this book.
One of the Best book in Security & Optimization.......2002-05-01
Great Book!! Great Writer!!
Nice to have a book like this.

Book Description
Security is increasingly a concern among system administrators, including those using Red Hat Linux. Learn Red Hat Linux Security shows experienced system administrators a process for implementing Red Hat Linux into an overall security management system. In addition to a review of the basic computer security issues common to all systems, the book provides an in-depth discussion of security issues concerning major components of the Red Hat Linux filesystem; tools for maintaining security; and advanced security techniques.
The appendixes contain definitions for terms and acronyms used in networking and Internet security; Linux security commands; Linux security weaknesses; sites related to security; and listings of networking HOWTOs, networking RFCs, and man pages for networking administration and maintenance.
The companion CD-ROM contains the official Red Hat Linux 6.2 operating system for Intel computers.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely vague and general.......2002-09-23
I was hoping to learn more about the securing a linux system, but found that this book only skims the surface. Mostly it speaks about what security is in general and only points out some of the parts of linux that need to be secured such as passwords. This book was written for the absolute linux beginner that doesn't even know what a shell is. I guess I was looking for more of a how-to: something that will talk about some of the holes that have been found in the past, how they were fixed, what types of security breaches are common, and how to prevent them.
I have read this entire book, and I am no more secure than I was before reading this book!
