This Book + Transcender = 1 Easy Exam.......2007-06-18

The following are my pointers about the book and exam. I hope they'll help calm someone's nerves, because I was a nervous wreck before my exam yesterday.

First, about me:

> I studied in earnest for three weeks, using only the book and accompanying practice exams until the last three days
> I used Transcender during the last three days, and never scored above 60% on the full practice exam
> I am relatively new to .NET (four months exp. writing production-level apps), but not new to software development (working with Java for over four years)
> I passed the exam yesterday, on the first attempt, with a score of 859

With that said...

1. To anyone sadistic enough to take a Java cert exam (like my moronic self), the MCTS is a cakewalk. Unlike the ferocious Java exams which try to bait you into picking the wrong answers, 70-539 seems to do the exact opposite. I'll elaborate on this in point 2.

2. Remember taking the SATs and being given the advice to first eliminate clearly wrong answers before analyzing the ones that might be right? Do that on this exam, and you'll immediately cut your answer choices in half on nearly every question. For the vast majority of the questions, Microsoft practically GIVES you the answer - almost like they're trying to sell you on how intuitive their framework is. These questions are multiple choice, with one answer choice being cartoonishly incorrect, another answer being kind-of-correct but clearly too convoluted, then two or more other answers that are extremely similar, except for some minor detail.

3. You do not need to go into the MSDN and know every object mentioned in the book like Adam knew his wife. You should, however, be very familiar with the methods and signatures of Stream objects, Serializer objects (XMLSerializer, especially), AppDomain, and Culture/Region Info. As for the rest, just pay close attention to the methods and objects used in the book's examples.

4. The Transcender exam is WAAAAAAAAAAAY HARDER than the actual 70-539.

5. The MeasureUp exam that comes with the book is slightly easier than the actual 70-539.

6. On my particular exam, there were no questions whose material hadn't been covered by the book. Be careful, though, because from the Transcender exams it seems the book's authors left out at whole lot about interoperability.

Seriously folks, this exam isn't that bad if you're a seasoned software pro and familiar with OOP. Get a solid grasp of the stuff in the book (the labs really help), use Transcender for some details that the book misses, take the exam, and pass that sucker.

Good for beginners!.......2007-06-17

This book is really a good one, for people who are not familiar with programming computer applications.
It's starting from the beginning and is explaining very well all the examples of code used in the book.
Sometimes there is too much theory used in the book, but the reader of the book, gets also a lot of practical exercises to test your knowledge.

Teaches the fundamentals for the test.......2007-06-14

I read this book in preparation for the 70-536 exam. As the other reviews say, the latter chapters start to show a breakdown in editorial skill and in-depth description. The bottom-line is that if you have over a year of good concentrated (not college classes) programming AND you read every chapter of this book to familiarize yourself with the fundamentals covered in the test, you will probably pass. The practice tests that are included leave a little to be desired as well, while they do get you familiar with the concepts of the questions that will be asked on the actual exam, the practice test questions will not contain any of the actual questions on the test (you'll need some supplemental brain-dumps for that).

This book is truly overly complicated.......2007-05-08

I brought this book in order to learn how to program. I wanted to take the exam. I had to get a dictionary to make it trough the text. The author seemed to take a very complicated issue, and make it even more complicated by the use of the types of words like antithesis, and obfuscate. While I know what these words mean, it would have been a much easier read if he would have used plain english. I have a bachelors in CIS, and 2 masters degrees. An MBA, and a masters in project management, and I still had a hard time making it through this text. As the other reviews have suggested, I had to purchase 2 other texts to learn the language. I have since been designing web pages for a year, and I have never, ever, opened this book again. It was a waste of the $49 bucks I paid for it.

Revised Edition Still Incredibly Bad.......2007-05-03

I've been so frustrated with this book that I finally decided to write my first review. It's incredibly hard to read due to the ambiguities and laughable inaccuracies; and this is the "revised" copy. I went to the errata link and found that even the most obvious problems were not addressed. For example, there is 3 line code snippet on page 46 dealing with event handlers that was "corrected" and the revision on the first statement invalidated the third. The review questions often cover topics out of order or ask questions that are simply not covered anywhere in the book. You don't have to be an expert to see the problems here, but you'll have to become one to make sense out of this book.

Up to the Task.......2007-05-15

If you want to learn about installing, configuring and administering XP Professional on a network, I think this is a very good book to have. This book prepares you to take exam 70-270. It covers the material very thoroughly with twenty chapters devoted to theory and seven chapters devoted to practicing for the exam. Actually, the last seven chapters were very helpful in learning the subject. These chapters present questions covering all objectives of the exam with an explanation of both the correct and the incorrect answers. You need to be aware that the questions don't simply cover material presented in the first twenty chapters. Quite to the contrary, they present new information that adds to your knowledge base. The questions were of high caliber being verbose and somewhat difficult. This is what you want to prepare for the exam.

As a bonus the enclosed CD offers hundreds more questions using the MeaurseUp testing engine. I found the questions to be very good. They were difficult and required a bit of thought to answer. They also include good explanations for both the correct and incorrect answers - very helpful for learning. But, I must say that several of the questions were wrong - only a few, and there were way too many typographical errors. I really think that MeaurseUp (the company producing the question engine) needs to vet their products better.

Overall, I found the book and CD combo to be a great value.

As a side note, XP Professional will remain relevant for some time to come. It is true that at this time Vista has been out for five months now, but many businesses will not upgrade immediately and many will just clone XP to their new machines. So you still need to know XP perhaps while learning the new OS on the block.

You want to study other resources in preparation for this or any exam. I found that answering questions and noting the explanations for the answers is a very good way to master the subject. I researched many Web sites that offer practice exams for a price. It appears that the two I would recommend are also the two that Microsoft recommends, that is, MeasureUp which you get for free on the CD, and SelfTest.

Misleading Information.......2007-05-04

Good book to just "pass" the exam. If you're really into learning the right way of doing things this book blows. This book is filled with information that is not correct and really will make you more confused when you try it out. Remeber that "best practices" help you pass the exam, but they do not teach you anything for the real world. I would go with the Sybex 270 personally. Much better.

Great Book for 70-270.......2007-04-14

First off, do not listen to the reviews that post bad about this book. YES, you will fail the test if you just go off this book and have 0 experience with Microsoft Windows XP (as an admin) and other M$ technologies.

This book is supposed to be a supplement to an Admin's knowledge to pass the test, not your average Joe that does something else for a living and fixes PC's in their spare time.

However, that being said, if you want to pass this test and have little experience, do all the hands-on labs in this book and get exam-cram. This will help you (hopefully) pass the test.

This book is well written, however very DRY....good book to sleep to...but it's supposed to be this way, I want information, not a happy novel.

All exam topics are covered in here (except for a Bluetooth question I had) but I am not sure if that was a scored question or just a question M$ throws in. Anyway, good enough to pass the test if you are a desktop admin or Network admin! Good Luck!

I have been working with SQL Server since version 4.2. Since then, there have been a lot of books written, but few of this quality. The principal author has a gift for clear and succinct writing that only comes from knowing a topic well. Time and time again I marveled at how few words he used to explain complex technical topics. I recommend this book highly not only for those seeking certification, but also for those who wish to learn how to implement and maintain SQL Server 2005. Money well spent.

I like the topics they are covering. However as mentioned, some of the coverage seems a little light. Hey a book can only be so big.

One annoyance was the example on page 175, the subquery is incorrect as it should be 'Select EmployeeId', not 'Select AddressId'. No wonder someone was confused.

SQL Server 2005 is a big subject. This book takes a good stab at it.

Lots of mistakes.......2007-04-04

I don't know what edtion this is, but the first edition has lots of mistakes in them. When I came accross the index chapter I kept banging my head against the wall since the example didn't make sense, sure enough, it was a typo...
Go online and find the list of typos in this book. The link is on the CD what comes with the book.
I found it easy to read though.

I have just finished the 70-431 book. The book is fairly well written, however, it is a full of errors! 8 Pages of corrections so far. It would have been nice if the authors/editors had tried the exercises at least.
I don't believe reference books should be like OS's that need a service pack in order to get through the written practice's. A little quality control would have done wonders!

Pretty good coverage on measuring and troubleshooting server performance and query performance. Good chapter on index optimization and maintenance. This book also covers replication and security well. All in all, a valuable reference that will also help you pass the exam.

Excellent for real world and exams.......2007-03-17

Having achieved NT, 2000, and now 2003 MCSE certification, I've found the Microsoft Press books to be mixed bags. This one, however, is excellent. Weighing in at nearly 1500 pages, it covers a lot of ground. If you read (and re-read) the entire book, as well as ALL of the test questions in the included Measure Up sample test, and follow up on unclear information/answers with the TechNet website, and of course have real-world experience, then you'll have excellent preparation for the exams.

When reading this book, I kept admiring the editing. Most tech books have some serious editing problems - unclear wording, dubious or flat-out incorrect information. With this one, I was continually impressed with how each sentence was written to say precisely what was intended, with not too many or too few words. That's not to say it's pithy - writing "Windows Server 2003" repeatedly takes up space - just that it's very well written.

The glossary and included ebooks are helpful as well. Only bummer is that you can't print from the ebooks, so when you're studying, you'll need to apply pen to paper, or go to TechNet and do some printing.

The Measure Up practice test is not nearly as well written as the book - some dubious wording, typos, and incorrectly scored questions (like the answer is A, you put A, and the test scores it wrong). However, the practice test covers topics not included in the book (!), so it's worthwile to go through it.

Oh, and Microsoft even managed to inject a bit of humor here and there.

If Microsoft Press continues publishing books like this, they'll be a strong alternative to Sybex and others.

Nearly perfect, and surely the best prepguide there is available.......2006-09-30

I've used two preparation guides, this one and the one from Sybex. MSPress is definitely the best of these two books. Covers it all, the sybex version is too superficial and just does not cover it all, it actually lacks some important material.

This book contains lots of exercises, so you get hands on experience with all kinds of tools. Believe me, you are going to need it! The actual exam contains several simulations, so just reading about the available tools, options and functions is just not enough.

Futhermore every chapter ends with a small case study with some questions all of course regarding to stuff outlined in the chapter.

Without this book I would not have passed, both exams.

Best Comprehensive Book Available but not without faults.......2006-08-31

I used this book as a primary study guide for the 2003 upgrade exams and although it doesn't cover all the material, it is an excellent book and in my humble opinion the single best source of prepartion.

From what I've gathered, the exams changed sometime in late 2005 and some of the content is dated. That however is not the fault of the authors and unlike many of the "Microsoft Press" books, I found this an enjoyable and easy read.

The book is not indended to deeply review the "Core MCSE Curriculum". Its' audience is expected to be familiar with Windows 2000 engineering and administrative principles as well as a practicing administrator. The text will present content that is now covered under the exam (ie: high availibility services and certificate services)and features that are differential to the old product line. So do not expect this to be your sole source for content, at best it covers 80% of the exam's breadth. If you feel in the learch, I can only suggest brushing up on your 2000 or 2003 core infrastructure notes especially dealing with the subjects of GPOs and Site design\ AD-replication.

Subjects that are missing from the book that require research are EMS (in-band\ out of band services), Role Separation for Cerificate services and WIFI GPO administrative practices. A list of references to supportive documentation can be found in the study notes at [...] . The webpage's host has done an admirable job of putting them together.

In final preparation for the exam, I can only suggest Transcenders as a simulation software...accept no other. CBT nuggets has some great multi-media presentations available through their website to aid in reviewing the material and their content is first class.

Good book.......2006-06-30

This book covers the essentials skills to upgrade to your certification to Windows Server 2003. However, it does cover many topics that you already knew from your Windows 2000 experience, which sometimes are topics you don't want to read about because for the most part, you expected to read only about the improvements and changes from Windows 2000 to Windows 2003. In spite of this, it is a GREAT source of information for people with little experience with Windows 2000.

Very boring to read, reads more like a reference book..........2006-05-31

There are not many pictures, and the content is brought out in a very slow way. In other words, the material is mostly there, but you fall asleep reading all the fluff before getting to what you actually need to know. I love reading, but the format of this book makes the content difficult to swallow. I would suggest to get a different book.

I passed my exam today and immediately wanted to share it. This is a good book for certification purpose only. Not a knowledge builder. I bought this book as there was the famous Microsoft Press label on the cover page. I spent one month reading thru book and completely omitting Case Scenarios and practiced few lab excercises. The main attraction is the stimulated exam which is very close to the exam but should be accompanied with other exam stimulation available in market..(I used all demo versions did not want to spend too much money). Also, just 7 days ago I read from the book reviews, that MSDN links should be read as well and that's what I did.. the true knowledge is stored there. Please Please read the MSDN links for every question in the stimulated exam and I bet anyone will pass without going thru painful lab excercise. Good luck to all you guys.

An excellent book to learn APS.NET 2.0.......2007-06-01

This is one of the best books I have used. It is very easy to read and understand. Anyone with average intelligence should be able to ready and get a very good knowledge on ASP .NET.

I don't think one can pass an exam just cramming some materials; you need to use your experience. An excellent book even for a beginner who has C# or VB.NET knowledge.

I agree this is not the book for an advanced developer.

I'm only up to chapter 4, but I've already learned more about ASP.NET from this book than I ever did from MSDN tutorials. It's well-written, and has reasonably good code with plenty of room for improvement by a practical programmer who is looking to practice his design skills.

It's cheaper than taking a class (and goes into MUCH more detail than any programming class I've ever been in), more thorough than either MSDN tutorials or webcasts, and seems comprehensive enough... I suspect that a reasonably intelligent entry/mid-level person with .Net skills could read this, go through every example, and come out very well informed. Maybe not ready for senior-level work, but a better programmer for making the effort, whether they take the test or not.

Good reference but NOT good enough to pass the exam........2007-03-22

I did pass the exam in the first attempt after one month of preparation.
This is a good reference book to start preparing for the exam.

But it is not good enough to pass the exam. You will need to do lot of
reading online. Take the practice tests provided on the CD. Go through /
read / understand the MSDN links provided on the CD under the learning
plan tab (which is displayed after you take the test).

After all these things what is most important is your experience in this
field and that if you can think the Microsoft Way?

Long story short - Can I just read this book and pass the exam - NO!

Good book to prepare to the 70-528 exam.......2007-03-17

Although I didn't read whole this book yet I can surely say that the way this book is written is really good and I hope it will lead me to MCTS Web Apps. Of course there are some typos but I think that this book gives a good overall understanding of the concepts involved on exam objectives.

Previously I bought a 70-536 Training Kit form MS Press, I red it and although it was my only book when I was preparing to 70-536 exam I passed it for the first attempt. That's why I think if the 70-528 TK is written in the same way as 70-536 TK is (IMHO it is even a little better edition) and the previous book led me to MCP this one will also do this

From the other site preparation tests included in this book should be a "little more" close to this from the real exam. The best way is to take other tests let say from the Transcender or MeasureUp. This was the major reason for me to give it 4 stars.

MS Press books are the only ones that are available in the market right now (12/06) to prepare for MCTS 70-526 exam apart from Measureup, Transcender Practice exam and online material. For that the authors have done a great job. This book not only helps in preparing for the exam but also can be used to get some hands on experience. It has couple of omissions (Ex., missing a file or so in one or two labs in data access). But, I think by now that should also be available in their support website. This book comes with 300 practice test questions. After having gone through other pratcice exam material, I think this fares much better (only a couple of repetitions or errors). MCTS exam covers various areas and is a test of nerves. If we put our mind to it we can do it. I used this book, and Measureup practice test and passed the exam in my first attempt.
