Book Description

The new edition of Glover and Sarma's highly-respected text provides students with an introduction to the basic concepts of power systems along with tools to aid them in applying these skills to real world situations. Like earlier editions of the book, physical concepts are highlighted while also giving necessary attention to math-ematical techniques. Both theory and modeling are developed from simple beginnings so that they can be readily extended to new and complex situations. Beginning in Ch. 3, students are introduced to new concepts critical to analyzing power systems, including coverage of both balanced and unbalanced operating conditions. The authors incorporate new tools and material to aid students with design issues and reflect recent trends in the field. Each book now contains a CD with Power World software. This package is commonly used in industry and will enable students to analyze and simulate power systems. The authors use the software to extend, rather than replace, the fully worked examples provided in previous editions. In the new edition, each Power World Simulator example includes a fully worked hand solution of the problem along with a Power World Simulator case (except when the problem size makes it impractical). The new edition also contains updated case studies on recent trends in the Power Systems field, including coverage of deregulation, increased power demand, economics, and alternative sources of energy. These case studies are derived from real life situations.

Book Description

The Designer's Guide to Verilog-AMS presents Verilog-AMS, the new analog and mixed-signal extensions to the widely used Verilog hardware description language.
It starts by describing a rigorous and proven top-down design methodology. Top-down design is widely seen as the key to being able to design very large and complex mixed-signal circuits and it is enabled by Verilog-AMS. Verilog-A and Verilog-AMS are then introduced without assuming that the reader has a background in behavioral modeling. Finally, it includes a comprehensive reference guide for the language.
The Designer's Guide to Verilog-AMS is extensively cross-referenced and indexed, making it an ideal reference for both Verilog-A and Verilog-AMS. A companion website, www.designers-guide.com, provides electronic copies of all the models used in this book, a library of user-contributed models, a discussion forum, additional documents on simulation and modeling, and other useful material.
The Designer's Guide to Verilog-AMS is written for analog and mixed-signal designers, particularly those designing larger and more complex circuits.

3 out of 5 stars An introduction to Verilog AMS.......2006-08-14

I am new to verilog A and even newer to Verilog AMS. I thought the book was a reasonable introduction to the language, but I prefer a longer text with more content. The book is only of moderate length and expensive as seems to be typical of Kluwer texts. There are also some spots where clarity, at least to myself, was lacking. A user will need the Verilog AMS license from Cadence to use this language. Lacking such a license, I was never able to apply the mixed signal info from the text. For the pure Verilog A user who is doing only analog and not mixed signal sims, this book may not offer an advantage over Fitzpatrick's book even though it is newer. For the practicing engineer, this text is a far better way of getting introduced to Verilog AMS than Cadence's cryptic documentation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the language & excelent reference.......2005-12-22

This book is currently the only up-to-date reference book for Verilog-A and Verilog-AMS (the book by Fitzpatrick is very incomplete and way out of date).

It introduces the language by using a series of relatively simple yet useful examples. In doing so it gets you up and running quickly and then builds your knowledge of the language. It takes you through Verilog-A in some depth, then presents enough Verilog-HDL (the digital subset) to give analog designers a workable understanding of Verilog, and then covers Verilog-AMS in depth.

The book has one chapter that acts as a complete reference for the manual for VerilogA/MS and and excellent index. I use the book as a reference as I write models and can always find what I am looking for very quickly.

In short, I recommend it whole-heartily. It is an essential book for anyone that uses Verilog-A or Verilog-AMS.

2 out of 5 stars Surely there must be a better verilog book out there.......2007-05-02

Here are my complaints with the book:

1. Poor organization -- While it does contain a fairly complete description of Verilog, it's not a very useful description. Reading this book is like reading the Tax Act - all the information is there somewhere, but good luck trying to find it.

2. Poor index -- As a reference, this book is pretty much useless because it lacks a good index. Many items discussed in the book are _not_ in the index. So you can never find that thing that you vaguely remember reading about last month. And you cannot find the answer to a simple question quickly.

3. Lack of practical examples -- For a chip designer or verifier, this book is more or less useless. Although it claims to be "A Guide to Digital Design and Synthesis", there is only one brief chapter on synthesis, and it is severely lacking (a mere 40 pages out of 450). He doesn't even demonstrate how to code a flip-flop with an asynchronous reset. When it comes to practical usage, you're better off searching the web, or reading the source code for the openrisc processor, or something written by an experienced co-worker, or even just reading chapters 11 and 12 of "Application Specific Integrated Circuits" by Michael Smith (also available online I think).

4. Expensive -- I recommend you save your money and just use on-line resources to learn Verilog. None of these on-line resources are great, but at least you will be getting your money's worth, which is more than I can say about this book.

2 out of 5 stars Awful reference source.......2007-04-01

I used this book to learn Verilog and if you read it from beginning to end, you might learn the gist of the language...but that's it. The book is virtually useless as any kind of reference source. The index is almost unusable (if you want to learn about the keywords "fork" or "join", for example, good luck. They aren't even listed in the index, along with just about everything else). Descriptions of how the language works are cryptic and overly brief, though the examples are sometimes helpful.

I seldom write reviews of books, but this one has annoyed me so much that I felt compelled to do so.

All in all, it's better than no book at all, but not much better.

4 out of 5 stars Great coverage of Verilog language.......2006-10-11

Very comprehensive text about the Verilog language, covering the various aspects of the language. The text is clear and well organized. The exercises at the end of the chapter helped me a lot in the learning process. The simulator included is very simnple and all examples in the book run flawlessly. A few things I did not like: the few mistakes in the text and code could have been easily caught by any careful reviewer, the lack of a more detailed example to show the usage of the various constructs in a real world Verilog design and hints about how to build synthesizable Verilog programs. I have enjoyed the author's style and recommend the book for any person who wants to learn Verilog, including other software engineers like myself who want to understand some HDL basics.

4 out of 5 stars Good explanations but not for reference.......2006-01-07

I read the book; it is a good one for reader to catch the idea quickly. But to use it as a reference book might not be a good idea. The topic organization is divided into basic usage section and advanced technique section, and kind of hard to locate for a certain issue. However, it is still worthy of reading as a beginner. The most things I like this book is it use example(s) to explain the concept.

4 out of 5 stars an easy language.......2005-12-29

The author offers more than just a detailing of the various parts of the Verilog language. He also covers extra features that enhance what you can do in Verilog for the purposes of modelling or analysis.

Perhaps the most important aspect is how to divide your design into modules. A top-down approach that can greatly aid reducing the complexity of the original problem. Also, constructing modules helps in the testing of the full circuit, by being able to design in tests of each module. If you have a background in software, then you will recognise this factorisation into modules as very akin to traditional software design.

For the student, the chapters have numerous problem sets that let you tackle the language. The text shows that Verilog is actually a fairly simple language, as computer languages do. Those of you who have programmed in other languages should encounter no serious problems with Verilog.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Dissappointing. Good subject, poorly covered........2003-08-14

I was very disappointed with this book. It covers a very useful subject, but it is not well written. Almost every section was done better in other books covering the same material. It will be hard to prove how bad this book is, since on the surface everything seems to be there. However, as somebody who have read many books on this subject it was painful to read this one. It is more like a cut and paste job putting together well-known material without any new insights.

Despite its shortcomings, people who are not familiar with this subject can find this book remarkable and very useful.

Suggested Reading:

Howard Johnson's "Black Magic" and "Advanced Black Magic" books are definitely more pleasant to read while at a similar basic level. More advanced books on the same subjects include the classic work " Electromagnetic Compatibility" by Clayton Paul and of course most books on Microwave engineering. Brian Young's "Digital Signal Integrity"-although being less practical is a nicely done basic book discussing modeling and simulation of signal integrity.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Beginner and Experienced Engineers.......2003-05-01

Well organized book that does not skip on details. It explains in a clear and concise manner transmission line issues such as reflections, the why's and how's of matching impedance, and crosstalk among others.

5 out of 5 stars Great book !.......2003-02-09

Great explanations, with good examples. It is a very easy and interesting read, at the same time going into needed detail of high speed digital signalling issues. My course uses Digital Systems Engineering by Dally as text, but I find myself reading this book instead to get a better understanding, as it is clearer and better organized. Coming in really handy for my upcoming exam review!

5 out of 5 stars A great perspective of the real world.......2002-02-22

This book is excellent. As an experienced I.C. designer, I found practical information about interconnect theory and design practices. The book was well written; a good balance between theory and problem solving. The information is useful from the chip level to the outside world.

4 out of 5 stars OK, but if you get 1 HSDD book, get Johnson instead........2002-02-08

This book is OK. Does exactly what it says on the tin.

I was dismayed that Hall et al kept referring to Johnson & Graham's High Speed Digital Design instead of explaining material themselves.

I own both (Johnson and Hall). I prefer Johnson. But that's my preference ....

5 out of 5 stars Bible for LNA design.......2006-07-22

I am a Principal RF Engineer/ Program Manager, with a graduate degree in the field of RF / Microwave and more than a decade of experience working with it.

There are some books which are classics, pozar for basic microwave, Gerd Kaiser for basic optic fibers, balanis and K D Prasad for antennas, matthaei- young-jones for filters, Steve cripps for Power amplifiers and Guilermo Gonzales for low noise amplifiers.

This book treats the whole concept of desinging low noise amplifiers in a very comprehensive manner. It starts off by describing and establishing a understanding of the basics, such as S parameters, smith charts, etc. It doesnt assume anything, but strives to teach right from the begining. So it is a great reference book.

Then it progessively teaches you the various steps of amplifier design, right from determining the stability considerations, design as per gain, VSWR, noise figure etc. Each successive design is more complex than the previous, and it is a wonderful experience reading and understanding each and every minute detail about tansistors, matching networks, dc bias, etc. It deals with practical transistors and components as used in the industry and it gives thorough equations and design tips for a step by step procedure towards design amelioration.

The way you trade off the noise figure for VSWR and gain is a tricky business for LNA's. The way this book describes the method to do so on the smith chart with the Gain, VSWR and Noise figure circles is easy to understand and great to implement.

It has become a trend these days to blindly use simulation softwares. After reading this book, you will no longer be dependent on the trial and error method of microwave circuit design. But you will be able to move with confidence towards cutting down design time, NRE, and your designs will be more robust and repeatable.

I carry this one book with me whenever going on a technical meeting or conference. Be it a meeting with regards to antennas, or filters or any other microwave component or systems design issue. This book is so beautifully written you will find use for it as a reference even in these other fields.

The power amplifier section is not written too well, and the author merely touches on balanced amplifiers, push pull amplifiers, etc. The chapter about oscillators is good. But this book is primarily for those who wish to learn and establish expertise on Low Noise Amplifiers.

I would thoroughly recommend this book for graduate level school work, for beginners and experienced industry professionals and for hobbyists interested in learning about LNA design and creation.

Regards,
KL

5 out of 5 stars Very good book for LNA design.......2006-06-16

I recently took an RF course that was using this book. The examples that were provided were excellent. The theory that was presented wasn't hard to follow, and if the reader was motivated enough, they can test it out using a CAD program. I myself used ADS. This is a must have book if you're going into the RF profession.

5 out of 5 stars Looking for a practical RF Amp design book? this is it.......2005-01-22

This is a perfect book for power amplifier design.
I used this book when I was designing a class AB power amplifier in UHF band and I found it very helpfull. this book is among the few books that includs bilateral design techniques while most of the books only deals with simpler case of unilateral design.
It includes wide band and power amplifier design in a more practical way than the other books. I found the answer to my question about large signal impedance measurement methode in this book. It also includes plenty of equations concerning scattering parameters, reflection, transmission and other theoretical issues as well asoscillator design using DRO technique in last chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Very Well Written.......2004-03-17

I have used this for an Active class (at U-M) and found it very easy to comprehend the concepts presented. The book is not too meaty, but has plenty of detail to allow the user to follow derivations. Also covers advanced topics with some illustrative design examples. It is an excellent book that anyone doing LNAs, Oscillators or PAs needs to have to review.

5 out of 5 stars Beginning Microwave Amplifier Design - This is the Book!.......2002-10-18

I read the first edition, half the size, half the examples, and had to polish up on the calc. The second edition makes up for this and more. This is the definitive reference for all who are interested in microwave amplifier design with no previous experience. The Smith Chart approach follows the more academic derivations, which proves to be fast and easy. There is enough informatation to get one started on basic narrow band small signal gain, basic power configurations, and limited oscillator circuits. Buy this book before venturing on to more complex designs. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-03-04

This book is one of my favorite in my entire graduate experience. The language is easy to read. It's very coherent with good examples. In this book all the theory and operation of BJT and MOSFET amplifiers, differential pairs, active loads, as well as, frequency response and feedback is explained in depth. I found this book to be complete.

5 out of 5 stars not for novice! .......2006-08-06

It's a very good book but I think you need to have some knowledge of integrated circuit design and analysis before discovering this book.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-03-19

This is good book for Analog IC design, but very complex to understand. Quiet good for senior graduate students.

5 out of 5 stars You got to study the book if you want to nail Analog tech........2004-09-18

First of all, this book is not a novel, so don't read it when you are tired or bored. You will definitely fall into sleep!
This is the book you need to read if you have decided you are going to STUDY Analog.
I bought this book because my friend recommended this book as a good analog reference. Later on , it turns out I have two classes use this book as a textbook.
This book is not easy to read. But analog itself is not an easy subject. With my professors' guidence, I was able to understand the book. I was amazed that the amount of material I have learned from this book. This book teachs you the material that a lot of other books skips. For example, offset voltage, most of other books will only describe in one or two paragraph. But this book explained in many sections. And offset voltage is a very important concept in Analog field.
A lot of other students complained the book covers too much stuff. It has fabrication, which can be one course. It has bipolar, CMOS, which can be course. It has feedback system, which can be another control system class. But these are essential concepts you need to know about analog IC. The title of the book is not

Book Description

Functional verification remains one of the single biggest challenges in the development of complex system-on-chip (SoC) devices. Despite the introduction of successive new technologies, the gap between design capability and verification confidence continues to widen. The biggest problem is that these diverse new technologies have led to a proliferation of verification point tools, most with their own languages and methodologies.

Fortunately, a solution is at hand. SystemVerilog is a unified language that serves both design and verification engineers by including RTL design constructs, assertions and a rich set of verification constructs. SystemVerilog is an industry standard that is well supported by a wide range of verification tools and platforms. A single language fosters the development of a unified simulation-based verification tool or platform.

Consolidation of point tools into a unified platform and convergence to a unified language enable the development of a unified verification methodology that can be used on a wide range of SoC projects. ARM and Synopsys have worked together to define just such a methodology in the Verification Methodology Manual for SystemVerilog. This book is based upon best verification practices by ARM, Synopsys and their customers.

Verification Methodology Manual for SystemVerilog is a blueprint for verification success, guiding SoC teams in building a reusable verification environment taking full advantage of design-for-verification techniques, constrained-random stimulus generation, coverage-driven verification, formal verification and other advanced technologies to help solve their current and future verification problems.

This book is appropriate for anyone involved in the design or verification of a complex chip or anyone who would like to know more about the capabilities of SystemVerilog. Following the Verification Methodology Manual for SystemVerilog will give SoC development teams and project managers the confidence needed to tape out a complex design, secure in the knowledge that the chip will function correctly in the real world.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent theoretical text. Probably not the best starting point.......2007-06-01

This is a very good book. However, as a newcomer to VMM, I initially got more out of "A Pragmatic Approach to VMM Adoption" by Cohen, Venkataramanan and Kumari. I use both books extensively. Since reading "A Pragmatic Approach", Bergeron's book is much more understandable and useful.

3 out of 5 stars VMM is difficult.......2007-01-16

The book starts off fairly well through the first three chapters. Then all of a sudden it makes a huge leap and it becomes very difficult to follow. There are a lot of very advanced topics that require a lot of object oriented programming experience to understand. On my second reading I saw that even Janick says that he does not expect you to understand VMM on the first reading.

A class based methodology is a complex topic and the VMM book does not do much to make it any easier. If you are a C++ (or something similar) guru, then you might enjoy this book. Otherwise, save your money and download the white papers from the web.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to learn about VMM........2006-08-31

I got this book at work to learn about VMM and the use of it.
It covers high level concepts and recommendations on developing a successful verification environment. It does not teach you the syntax or the basics of System Verilog. Beside teaching you these high level concepts, it covers in detail the use of the VMM base classes offered with Synopsys' VCS tools.
The book has code example in each topic covered which will make it easier to understand.
The topics covered include, but not limited to, Verification planning, assertions, testbench infrastructure, stimulus/response and coverage.
If you are using VMM in your development, then this book is definitely the manual that goes with it.
A must have for a successful verification engineer working with VMM. (6 out of 5 stars)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for designers........2005-02-16

The book covers synthesis and design issues with clarity and concise explanations for each case. There isn't any extra fluff to get in the way of going from concept-to-synthesis for each topic presented.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book on verilog.......2003-06-24

Bob's "Verilog Designer's Library" is an excellent book for
verilog programmers. It does help me much. Every example in
this book is very practical to engineers. I like it.

4 out of 5 stars Some Good Points.......2002-12-31

This book is good for beginners, it has a few good ideas in it. The Behavioral vs. RTL versions of the code is pretty useless, but the RTL vs. Simulation versions are useful. Getting a quick and dirty unit test bench up and running is a good idea. But DO NOT USE THE ASYNCHRONOUS FIFO. It does not work. If you are crossing clock boundaries, this is not the way to do it!

5 out of 5 stars The reviews about Verilog Designer's Library.......2002-12-25

This book reviews the the Verilog Coding Technique in part one. It introduces the Genearl Coding, Behavioral Coding, and RTL coding technique. It makes reader understand how important the coding technique is. This book also explains synthesis issue and simulation issue. After these chapters introduction, the basic building block, state machines, some complex functions, error dection and correction, memory controller Verilog behaviour code and RTL code are introduced in further chapter. This book is for whom has a basic familiarity with Verilog language. It is very useful and valuable for hardware designer, hardware system engineer and student.

5 out of 5 stars Handy Library, Cut and Paste.......2002-12-13

The book has gone through the very details of logic synthesis. With a rich and usable set of design ideas that can be used in any design with minimal modifications. Save time in your design while you learn.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-06-20

I am second year student in Electrical Engineering. I used the book to prepare for my Digital Design exam last semester. Passed with almost 100% :)
Now I read the book for a second time, expecially the last chapters. I think this is a great book if you want to understand the basics of the Digital D&A.
You will find almost everything, from basic boolean algreba to CPLD and FPGA structure and functions. The explanations are very clear with a lot of graphics.

In conclusion: This is a TOP 1 Book for everyone who enters (and not only) the amazing world of Digital D&A. I can only recommend it.

Book Description

Updated with modern coverage, a streamlined presentation, and an excellent CD-ROM, this fifth edition achieves a balance between theory and application. Author Charles H. Roth, Jr. carefully presents the theory that is necessary for understanding the fundamental concepts of logic design while not overwhelming students with the mathematics of switching theory. Divided into 20 easy-to-grasp study units, the book covers such fundamental concepts as Boolean algebra, logic gates design, flip-flops, and state machines. By combining flip-flops with networks of logic gates, students will learn to design counters, adders, sequence detectors, and simple digital systems. After covering the basics, this text presents modern design techniques using programmable logic devices and the VHDL hardware description language.

4 out of 5 stars College Text.......2007-05-15

I bought this book for my college class. I don't have it until this summer. It comes with a disk with two programs for programming digital logic.

3 out of 5 stars Great Self Study Guide.......2006-10-21

I grade the first 20 chapters an A ... the remainder: a C+

This book is a great intro to logic design. Read it with John W Carters : Digital Design with Programmable Logic Devices ... to clear up state machine/synchronous binary
counter issues. And to get experience with real world design issues.

5 out of 5 stars Background comments.......2005-06-18

A few comments concerning the material and Dr. Roth. I had the pleasure of using the book while it was still being 'student tested' prior to publication back in the 1970s, and found the course so interesting that I proctored it the following semester. My background prior to taking what was at the time a senior level EE course included no EE whatsoever. The material was well-organized and presented in a consistent pedagogical manner that I find rare in technical textbooks.

I had the pleasure of taking courses with Dr. Roth, and wish to emphasize that he has a very strong interest in effective teaching, and in learning how to make learning more efficient. I found that, as a result, I was both challenged and inspired by one of the best university level instructors I have ever had.

I will also state that I have self-studied topics on numerous occasions, and I have found that 'programmed learning' is one of the most effective teaching methods yet devised.

I have not seen the current edition of 'Fundamentals', but based on my experience with the book since its infancy and my personal knowledge of Dr. Roth's abilities and interest in teaching this material, I would expect the book to be an excellent learning tool.

5 out of 5 stars New Fifth Edition correct flaws.......2004-08-02

I reviewed the Fourth edition before, but have now revised that review to reflect major improvements in the new edition.

This is a learn-by-example style of text. Not only are examples given in the body text, but the first end-of-chapter problems are worked out in detail, and solutions are given for many more. I consider this a fine book for enriching the material I'm presenting in class.

The old edition was dated and promoted design styles that are not advised. The new edition fixes those problems and this is now a great text. Three chapters introducing VHDL have been added after the chapter sequences on combinatorial logic, sequential logic, and digital systems. Thus VHDL doesn't intefere with the teaching of the fundamentals, but serves to enhance by providing the modern practices. The chapters are not thorough enough for practicing design in VHDL but are a good introduction. Relatively modern components are now used in the practical examples. I don't think anyone will mind that the chapters on asynchronous state machine design are gone.

The new text comes with a CD containing a simple VHDL simulator (which I have not tested), SimuAid (also untested) and Professor Roth's venerable LogicAid -- a combinatorial logic synthesis tool which if nothing else provides a means that students can check their hand-made designs. People using this text in self-study would probably find the CD paricularly useful, although it has little value in school settings where professional software tools are available.

5 out of 5 stars the best for excercises.......2002-11-23

i have been using both roth and mano for my digital design course at college and my experience is that roth is 'the' book for digital design.it is clear ,concise and to the point.mano seems to be a little too descriptive and sometimes drives you early to bed.however it is always good to refer to mano as for PLDs are concerned..
