Interested in VCoPs? Buy this book!.......2006-05-29
This book is methodologically sound AND useful. Suggestions and advices are backed up by literature, it's not just the usual collection of "expert opinions". By the same token, suggestions and advices are sound and practical, not just impractical "erudite hypotheses". Perfect for pracademics!
It applies to virtual communities of practice.......2003-08-28
The material in this book can be applied to increase the productivity of virtual communities of practice. It is a book I recommend to those who make a living in the world of knowledge management.
Everything you need to consider for asynchronous learning.......2001-07-22
I have found this book to be very helpful if you are REALLY interested in doing asynchronous work online. The authors are leading edge thinkers about this subject who have earned themselves a place in the world consulting to people who want to do this. The problem is that many, many people only THINK they know what asynchronous learning is and until you actually experience it you won't know. Can't know something until you learn it. Rena and Keith have done a very good job of showing you EVERYTHING you need to know to get the job done. You can use it like a menu, take what you want and leave the rest alone. They spend a good deal of time trying to get people to understand the TRUE nature of an asynchronous world. They are sincerely at the leading edge. I think I know what leading edge is, I think I'm there experiencing true asynchronous learning now at the renowned Fielding Institute. Good book for your reference. You may not need all of it NOW but you will soon!
Big Mac of a book: high calories--low nutrition.......2001-07-13
This book is indeed 'pedagogically sound'; the trouble is: it likes the sound of its own voice, far too much, and plods on around the houses for far too long. It is a Big Mac of a book: high calories--low nutrition. I wasted money buying it, don't you make the same mistake. Buy something shorter, less cack-handed, and trendy.
Learning Communities and Cyberspace.......2001-05-17
The advice given in this books should not be limited to cyberspace. The examples, experiences, and education this book provides are applicable to both the classroom and cyberspace. Learning should not be a one way avenue from master to student, but a dialogue. This book is a stepping stone for learning in the information age.

CIO Reference Manual.......2004-08-26
As a CIO I though CIO Wisdom hits the nail on the head on many of the challenges and issues facing today's CIO's. Sound and practical advice from those actually performing in the job was quite refreshing to the theoretical approach found in many other books on this topic. I only wish that many of my customers (business line leaders and executives) would read this book to better understand the value of IT can bring to our organization.
My only critique is that some of the concepts discussed in the book where not fully flushed out when the author was talking about solutions. Of course there have been entire books written on some of the topics covered in CIO wisdom.
I was particularly impressed by the Communications, Governance, Marketing and the Business Intelligence chapters.
Superb compilation of knowledge & experience.......2004-06-21
The seventeen articles in this compendium represents contemporary and topical subjects, each written by a seasoned CIO. I was as impressed with the selection of articles as I was with the content because each topic is foremost on the minds of CIOs and senior IT managers today.
Among the articles I especially like are:
- The First 90 Days, by Mark Egan, which contains actionable plans that will get the new CIO (or other senior IT executive) quickly moving in the right direction.
- IT Organization, by Guy de Meester, in particular the challenges of centralization vs. decentraliztion, and organizational models in general. If this area is your focus I highly recommend additional reading: "Decentralization: Fantasies, Failings, and Fundamentals" (ISBN 0964163535) and "RoadMap: How to understand, diagnose, and fix your organization" (ISBN 0964163527), both of which go into great detail and provide an exceptionally effective approach.
- Governance, by Danny Maco, which is conspicuously missing in organizations large and small - or is often done incorrectly if done at all.
- Budgeting, by Bob Denis, Maureen Vavra, John Dick ... you'd think IT has this basic function under control, but sadly not. Read this article for excellent advice.
- The Metrics of IT: Management by Measurement, by Shel Waggener and Steve Zoppi. One of my favorite topics, and this team provides outstanding advice and keen insights.
Other articles are as well written, and span topics from architecture to strategic planning. Taken as a whole, this is a sourcebook that is filled with both knowledge and experience, and should be on the desk of every CIO, seasoned and new. I also recommend visiting the site that supports this book (paste the ASIN number, B0001EHNFK, into the search box for all products on this page). The site contains additional articles, news and other books in this series that CIOs, IT managers at all levels, and subject matter experts will find useful.
CIO Wisdom, Indeed !!.......2004-03-06
Truly, this is 'CIO Wisdom' - set down by CIOs and IT managers who deal day-to-day with information technology in perhaps the most challenging environment - Silicon Valley itself. As a 42-year veteran of the IT industry, I think this is the first time I've seen so much down-to-earth, practical and useful IT guidance in one place. The chapters are clearly and well-written. The authors get right down to the meat of the subject and provide practical suggestions for improving IT delivery.
If the book has a weakness, it is that there is so much specific information here that it will likely take multiple readings to glean all of it.
I think this book should be required reading for all CIOs ... and if you really want to start something, get a copy for everyone on your IT staff!
Putting Offerings into Right Perspective.......2004-03-03
Although this book is primarily targeted to IT-leaders or those who intend to become one I'm sure this book is also highly valuable for all CEOs and Marketing and Sales VPs of startup companies who are tarketing established corporations. This book will give them guidance to put their offerings into right perspective by giving insights about CIO's success strategies and challenges. And the structure of the book makes it easy and enjoyable reading for busy executives - from the first foreword to the last chapter.
CIO Wisdom review.......2004-02-26
As with many books that collect articles or papers, the organization is topical not a continuous sequence, although there seems to be some consideration given to precedence of topics.
I especially found value in the chapters on Communication, Governance, Architecture, the Value of IT, Metrics and the Cates article regarding Line of Business orientation.
There are some inconsistencies between articles, and minor editing errors.

Great "fly on the wall" ethnography of !Kung life.......2005-03-27
Taking a medical anthropology course, the teacher happened to assign this obscure ethnography of the Kalahari !Kung. It's an easy read, a fast read, and if you lend a bit of trust to the author Richard Katz, you get a critical view into the probably now vanished !Kung of South Africa (they've been placed on reservations by the then white South African government). The focus of this ethnography is the ritual healing dances of the !Kung, where healers dance to attain "num", an ancestral/divine energy that has tons of physiological affects, whereby they achieve "kia", an altered state of consciousness utilized in their mode of healing. Films I've seen of the Kalahari !Kung show the healers screaming (known as kowhedili) and "pulling sickness" from fellow tribesmen and women. This book is a great read about a modern hunter-gatherer tribe, by now probably vanished from the face of the earth. Indexicality incompatibility is fairly bridged by Katz, and his concluding recommendation about traditional !Kung practices and correlations to modern cummunity medical outreach strategy is useful. An old ethnography (1982) but a goodie.

Book Description
Congested roads waste commuters' time, cost them money, and degrade the environment. Most Americans agree that traffic congestion is the major problem in their communitiesand it only seems to be getting worse.
In this revised and expanded edition of his landmark work Stuck in Traffic, Anthony Downs examines the benefits and costs of various anticongestion strategies. Drawing on a significant body of research by transportation experts and land-use planners, he counters environmentalists and road lobbyists alike by explaining why seemingly simple solutions, such as expanding public transit or expanding roads, have unintended consequences that cancel out their apparent advantages. He argues that while there might be some measurable gains from increasing housing densities, most other land-use strategies have little effect. Indeed, the most powerful solutions, including higher gasoline taxes, increased public funding for transit, and highway tolls, are also the least palatable politically.
Still Stuck in Traffic contains new material on the causes of congestion, its dynamics, and its relative incidence in various parts of the country. In clear and realistic terms, Downs seeks to explore why traffic congestion has become part of modern American life and how it can be kept under control.

We are surrounded by the hardware of the modern world, but how much of it do we even notice, much less understand? This unique and fascinating book covers the parts of the landscape that are often overlooked despite their ubiquity--objects such as utility poles, power lines, cell phone towers, highway overpasses, railroad tracks, factories, and other man-made mechanical marvels. And they are not just in urban areas, but include out of the way "ecosystems" such as mines, dams, wind farms, power plants, grain operators, steel mills, and oil refineries. In Infrastructure, Brian Hayes offers clear explanations of the systems that keep the modern world running, including agriculture, energy supplies, shipping, air transportation, and the various ingenious methods of recycling and managing the waste we generate.
Subtitled "A Field Guide to the Industrial Landscape," the book is laid out like a nature guide, with comprehensive details and photographs on every page. "There can be just as much of interest happening on a factory rooftop as there is in the forest canopy, just as much to marvel at in the operation of a strip-mining dragline as in the geological carving of a river canyon," writes Hayes. A mine may not be as scenic as a mountain peak, but he argues it can hold as much fascination. His "chief aim is simply to describe and explain the technological fabric of society, not to judge whether it is good or bad, beautiful or ugly." In this he does an impressive job. He tells us how things work and why they are located where they are, and answers dozens of practical questions in the process. He also walks us through how raw materials such as coal, timber, petroleum, and water are converted and transported for use in our homes and businesses. Readers won't view the industrial landscape that same way after poring over this remarkable book. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
A companion to the man-made landscape that reveals how our industrial environment can be as dazzling as the natural world.
Replete with the author's striking photographs, Infrastructure is a unique and spectacular guide, exploring all the major "ecosystems" of our modern industrial world, revealing what the structures are and why they're there, and uncovering beauty in unexpected placesawakening and fulfilling a curiosity you didn't know you had. Covering agriculture, resources, energy, communication, transportation, manufacturing, and waste, this is the "Book of Everything" for the industrial landscape.
The objects that fill our everyday environment are streetlights, railroad tracks, antenna towers, highway overpasses, power lines, satellite dishes, and thousands of other manufactured items, many of them so familiar we hardly notice them. Larger and more exotic facilities have transformed vast tracts of the landscape: coal mines, nuclear power plants, grain elevators, oil refineries, and steel mills, to name a few. Infrastructure is a compelling and clear guide for those who want to explore and understand this mysterious world we've made for ourselves. 500 color illustrations.

Get the hard cover edition.......2007-06-06
Great book but the paperback edition is unwieldy. The book is very wide and printed on high quality, glossy paper which is very heavy. It's almost impossible to read the paperback edition when holding it in your hands because it won't lie flat.
I'm returning it and ordering the hard cover edition.
First Class.......2007-03-13
This is a terrific overview of infrastructure, very clear and accessible to anyone who is willing to read a bit carefully. I plan to use it as a text in an undergraduate course for social science undergraduates next academic year.
The answers to so many questions.......2007-02-19
As an engineer myself, I have been repeatedly astonished at how much this book has to offer. So many things I have wondered about and speculated on are addressed here. It's a long read (at least for me) but worth every minute. I wish I'd had this book 25 years ago as I probably could have skipped the first year or two of engineering school. It does get a bit geeky in places, with a few more detailed descriptions, but overall, it's written for someone with a curious mind. I feel like I can travel around our landscape with a new layer of understanding about how and why things are the way they are. An invaluable resource.
Highly recommended.
The greatest coffee book ever.......2007-01-04
If you have any interest in seeing how industry works (mining, the electrical grid, etc), you can get lost for hours in this book. The information is deep and very accessible. I've given it as a gift and it went over VERY well.
Infrastructure: A Field Guide to the Industrial Landscape.......2006-11-13
We have all enjoyed this book immensely. I have a waiting list of friends who want to read it.
Everything you ever wondered about, about the construction and workings of the industries and infrastructure that supports Western civilisations, written in the most approachable, down-to-earth and, at times, humorous manner. Mr Hayes has obviously enjoyed this project himself and shares that enjoyment and sense of wonder with the reader.
A treasure.

Reimagining cities as nodes of an immense network of commercial and political transactions, sociologist Saskia Sassen has transformed Information Age geography. Global Networks, Linked Cities collects research, theory, and case studies examining cities in this context by Sassen and 19 other social scientists, focusing particularly on the recent explosive growth in areas formerly--now inaccurately--called the Third World.
The jargon in Global Networks, Linked Cities can be fairly dense and the style arid, but the essays reward patient readers with insight into the interlinked worlds of finance, geography, communications, and geopolitics. Most of the pieces look closely at individual urban regions: Shanghai, Buenos Aires, and, interestingly, Beirut. All have much to tell us about the organic urban development coevolving with globalized commerce and communications, says editor Sassen. As barriers to free information flow erode, we see mergers between political, business, and academic entities.Global Networks, Linked Cities shows us how this is happening and how to think about what's coming next. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
In her pioneering book The Global City, Saskia Sassen argued that certain cities in the postindustrial world have become central nodes in the new service economy, strategic sites for the acceleration of capital and information flows as well as spaces of increasing socio-economic polarization. One effect has been that such cities have gained in importance and power relative to nation-states.
In this new collection of essays, Sassen and a distinguished group of contributors expand on the author's earlier work in a number of important ways, focusing on two key issues. First, they look at how information flows have bound global cities together in networks, creating a global city web whose constituent cities become "global" through the networks they participate in. Second, they investigate emerging global cities in the developing world-Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Mexico City, Beirut, the Dubai-Iran corridor, and Buenos Aires. They show how these globalizing zones are not only replicating many features of the top tier of global cities, but are also generating new socio-economic patterns as well. These new patterns of development promise to lead to significant changes in the structure of the global economy, as more and more cities worldwide are integrated into globalization's circuitry.
Includes contributions from:Linda Garcia, Patrice Riemens, Geert Lovink, Peter Taylor, David Smith, Michael Timberlake, Stephen Graham, Sueli Schiffer Ramos, Christoff Parnreiter, Felicity Gu, David Meyer, Pablo Ciccolella, Iliana Mignaqui, Eric Huybrechts, Ali Parsa. Also includes six maps.

Outsourcing, in a broader context.......2004-05-10
With the ever decreasing fall in the cost of communication, both digital and analog, this book speculates that a new global phenomenon may be emerging. A few years ago, during the height of the dot com boom, others suggested that the Web might give rise to the disaggregation of cities or cultural hubs, because cheap communications might let creative individuals work from virtually anywhere with a fast bandwidth connection to the Internet.
But as many major cities in developing countries achieve this thick connection, another possibility emerges, as suggested by this book. It is now possible for some of these cities to parlay this connection and a well educated workforce into a globally prominent role. In part by assuming some of the functionality hitherto almost exclusively taken by first world cities. Think for example on how Silicon Valley is outsourcing some of its work to Mumbai or Bangalore.
The book's suggestions of future global cities is intriguing. Though when they suggest this of Hong Kong, one might argue that it is already a global city by any reasonable measure of how plugged in it is into the global economy.

Book Description
Since 1997, on the second Monday of each month, twenty-six of the most powerful men in business, the Vanderbilts and Morgans of their time, would gather to eat dinner, hear investment pitches, and take one of the few breaks they got all month with the handful of people on earth they saw as their peers. When Washington Post reporter Shannon Henry heard about these meetings, she knew that the story of the dinners and the tales told at them would provide a fascinating portrait of the greatest business boom in the history of the world.
What went on in these four-star restaurants and private dining clubs is the inside story of the 1990s...the unimaginable growth of the economy, and in hindsight, its all-too-predictable fall. Henry, widely labeled the "dot-com diva," was the only reporter who had ever been allowed continued access to this intimate and influential group, which included America Online co-founders Steve Case and Jim Kimsey, NASDAQ vice chairman Al Berkeley, WorldCom CEO John Sidgmore, chief executive of MicroStrategy Michael Saylor, Virginia governor and former tech investor Mark Warner, and AOL executive and Washington Wizards co-owner Ted Leonsis. In The Dinner Club, Henry brings readers right to the dinner table, providing an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at these stories of ego, greed, dreams realized, dreams dashed, and the handful who continue to thrive.
From bankrupt companies to blockbuster surprise deals, Henry paints a ruthless, charismatic, and at times humorous portrait of the '90's boom. At one point the mercurial nature of the group and its members' concern about their reputations caused them to un-invite Henry to the meetings. But in the end, she was allowed to return and to chronicle the rise and fall of many of their companies. And now, with so many of these companies in disarray, Henry gives extraordinary insight into what these men were thinking and saying. They didn't think failure could happen to them, because they thought that they were different. But it did.
The Dinner Club is not only the inside story of this historic time, but also a glimpse into the future of America, as the members of the club created a legacy that will forever affect us all.
Customer Reviews:
A valuable look inside.......2004-08-06
This is one of those books that will gain in value as time passes. The Dinner Club looks at the critical time frame when the opening wave of success in the new technologies broke and retrenched. The useful insight this book provides is the snapshot of the individual club members and their focus on the future. Northern Virginia and its cultivation of technology is portrayed as well. Worth reading.
Personalities.......2004-01-19
As is the case with a lot of business reporting, this is personality-driven. Capital Investors consisted of a group of friends mainly working in the technology sector and situated in Washington, D.C. Michael Maccoby called Capital Investors productive narcissists.
There were twenty six members of the all male club. In Washington there is proximity to political and economic elites. Social networking was a chief reason to keep attending the group functions. The friendships were calculated.
Exclusive investing groups are rare. A woman has said that in times of economic turmoil, Capital Investors has become a support group. Investing clubs and other tech networking groups served as social interaction during the rise of the technology sector businesses.
Steve Case called 2000 the internet century. In the late 1990's AOL was talking to everyone, treating everything as a possible acquisition. In a market frenzy one should know that if everyone is getting into your business, it is time to sell. In the year 2000 in the tech world there was a blinders-on overworked mentality prevailing.
By 2001 talk shifted to pink slips, the dearth of venture capital, the market. In the downturn the group's portfolio of companies was fading.
In March 2000 MicroStrategy was advised by its auditors it had to restate earnings for two previous years. The stock price fell by sixty per cent in one day. The CEO of the company, Michael Saylor, was one of the members of the dinner club, Capital Investors.
Among the Capital Investors, Saylor fell the hardest. Other members of the group include the afore-mentioned Steve Case, James Kimsey, Art Marks, Mario Moreno, Alex Mandl, Jeong Kim, Bill Melton, Raul Fernandez, Ted Leonsis, Bill Gorog, Russ Ramsey, Mark Warner, Al Berkeley, Jonathan Silver, Raj Singh, Marc Andressen, John Sidgmore, Alan Spoon.
Fascinating...not necessarily insightful.......2003-07-18
Having been part of the high-tech community in the NoVA, I rushed out to buy this book so I could get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the personalities and characters that unarguably drive the business and (to some extent) culture of this area.
Overall, the book does deliver the insider perspective. It is successful at communicating the general feel of the 'era' - that bizarre blend of change-the-world optimism, unrealistic expectations, and at times mass-delusion.
This is a chronicle of a particular time...not an insightful story about the personalities, or what drives them. The pacing and arrangement of the chapters was very disorienting...Ms Henry jumps between characters and anecdotes without good reason at times. In all, the book reads as a set of mostly independent vignettes, rather than a compelling story.
(Incidentally, at the same time, I was reading Codename Ginger by Steve Kemper, which I highly recommend, which was technically a better written book...but other comparisions are unfair)
In any case, this still makes for fascinating reading, even if it's sometimes in a superficial voyeuristic sense.
Nothing we haven't seen before........2003-02-20
I found this book limited; the author was handed opportunity for deep insight in an increasingly relevant topic and missed the opportunity entirely. Not nearly the insight of Barbarians at the Gate or other classics that have been written since. Most painful is probably the editing; she re-tells anecdotes several times, which grew tiring.
Fascinating.......2003-02-06
An inside look at an elite group of angel investors who helped elect a governor and rode the Internet boom and bust through the startups they backed and the companies they ran. As a volunteer with a Washington, D.C. entrepreneur's networking group, where I heard Ms. Henry speak, I was fascinated to read how mundane some up or down decisions can be when a company asks for financial support - a lesson to those looking for funding. These titans knew that vision, intelligence, and drive aren't everything and their penetrating questions of candidate startups suggest they tried to pass this knowledge on. The world changed and Ms. Henry was taking notes when it happened! I am grateful for her insights and unvarnished view.

In light of recent world events, many people have been reaching out for the sort of closeness and supportive reassurances that can come from friends "met" in online communities. In an article written for TechTV.com, Design for Community author Derek M. Powazek notes that in the days following September 11 new sites sprang up and message board activity went through the roof. Message boards and chatrooms allowed people to connect with others--so crucial in times of trouble--to share breaking news, find ways to help, or post personal stories.
Of course, online communities are not only for the bad times: Web stores feature user-posted reviews, bulletin boards build up around all types of issues or shared experiences, celebrities answer questions in live chat sessions, and singles with Web cams check each other out.
"Web communities happen when users are given tools to use their voice in a public and immediate way, forming intimate relationships over time." Powazek should know; he created Fray.com and Kvetch.com and has acted as a consultant on Web community features for Netscape, Lotus, and Sony. Design for Community offers thorough (and entertaining) discussions on all aspects of building and maintaining a Web-based community. There are chapters on choosing content (including Powazek's recipe for encouraging positive communities), designing ("How do you present a discussion system that encourages friendly conversation?"), deciding on the backend technology necessary to run a site (whether server-side software or free Web-based tools), setting up rules, hosting, moderating, and even someday "killing" your community.
Each chapter features an interview with an expert, like Steven Johnson of Plastic.com on design and Emma Taylor, host of Nervecenter.com, a "community of thoughtful hedonists," on setting barriers and enforcing rules. Powazek maintains a companion site for this book at Designforcommunity.com, with excerpts, more essays, and, of course, a forum for discussion. If you're even considering building an online community, you must begin with this book. --Angelynn Grant

Don't start (or run) an online community without it.......2005-07-27
I have been managing an online community of about 6,000 users since 2004. Prior to that, my experience was one with Web Design and Project Management. Little did I know what was ahead for me. The challenges that I ran into were many and I was fortunate to count with the help of some great users of the community who volunteered their help and expertise to help us steer through them.
If I had taken the time to research and ran into "Design for Community: The Art of Connecting Real People in Virtual Places", prior to the design and launch of the community, I would have definitely implemented many of the pieces of advice it offers. I started reading this book only a week ago, and within hours of grabbing it, I was finding things I could apply to our community to address some of the pending issues that needed to be solved.
This is one of those books I won't stop recommending to anyone with the task of designing a site to host an online community, and then those tasked with managing it. Its advice, though a bit dated in some places, is priceless and timeless for the most part.
The definitive book on getting people involved.......2003-07-25
This book crops up a lot in recommendations from bloggers, and it's easy to see why. This book is a broad, yet detailed, treatment of how to start, grow, and manage, online communities. A successful online community (such as the thriving javaranch.com) has a real and valuable sense of belonging. This book can help you understand both the 'why' and the 'how'.
Most of the points made in this book are applicable to everything from email lists, through bulletin boards, to blogs, Amazon reviews and beyond. Many are also very thoughtful, such as the discussion of setting "barriers to entry", or the tricky subject of how to gracefully end a community. The book also includes some interviews with people involved in specific online communities. These interviews are not as directly useful as the rest of the book, but are an interesting alternative to the author's style.
If you are at all interested in gathering or supporting a group of real people using online tools, you need this book. It doesn't say much about specific tools or technologies, but it has the ever-elusive quality of "lasting value". I can really imagine myself re-reading and referring to this book in five or even ten years time.
A great place to start planning.......2002-07-04
This book tells you what it takes to run a virtual community - any kind. It is written in plain English, and it had been extremely fun to read. I highly recommend it to non-technical readers such as Web project managers, Webmasters and Web designers. Everybody will be able to learn a great deal from this book, regardless of their backgrounds.
You will find yourself feeling much more knowledgeable - if not confident - after reading this book.
Excellent PRACTICAL guide to building online communities.......2002-03-04
My review of this book is simple - it tells you everything you need to know to build and run an online community, in plain language, without irrelevent academic theories.
If you only buy one book, buy this one.
I have been involved with online communities for a while, and because I have been unhappy with their limited functionality, have been creating next generation software for them.
Need-to-know information for community builders.......2002-02-02
I'm in the process of retooling an online community myself, and Design for Community has given me a lot to think about. It's extremely useful. No one should try to build an online community without reading this book first.
While it is not difficult to find the software tools required to build an online community, experience and insight is harder to come by. Powazek draws examples from his own work and interviews some of the leading lights of online communities to show what has worked, what doesn't, and what you should look out for.
This book invites its readers to ask themselves some questions about the online communities they want to build. Why do you want to build it? What are you trying to accomplish? What relationship do you want to have with your visitors? And how do you plan to keep order, maintain decorum, and enforce the community's rules? These are questions, I'm afraid, that many webmasters and site owners have simply never asked themselves, and boy does it ever show.
Case in point: In my very, very small corner of the web, just about everybody with a small home-based business and a two-bit web site wants to set up a mailing list or discussion board to go along with it. They don't appear to have done much thinking about it, apart from a vague notion that a forum would be cool and would draw traffic to their site. In fact, the biggest site/portal in the subculture I inhabit sells itself by saying that its discussion forums draw traffic to the hobbyist/small-business home pages it hosts and the advertising it sells -- i.e., its forums are its content. Meanwhile, the quality and tone of discussion on those forums is a constant source of grief. These people need to read this book.
